Good, glad you like it so much!

Your opinion is 100% right for you. Art is subjective. If you think that's the best album then for you, it is. No one can tell you any different, just as you can't tell someone else the album they think is the best is not.

Anyone who disagrees with that doesn't understand the concept of "art".

Ain't about to stop, like a mack and shut this down drag the album down. AOA & 2010 are better albums.

Shut This Down is fantastic. Funky and layered with great vocals that I bet would crush live.

Phase One bangs btw. Fact.

STD in particular.

I wouldn't come anywhere to close to saying this album is his best but I can see why people might like it and, so far, no one has really offered a rebuttal beyond "it sucks" and most fail to say why.

I like about half of it well enough

I've only listened to it once on Tidal, but I enjoyed it. It was produced by someone else, but he managed to retain the "Princeness" while adding some modern sounds and textures, and the arrangements were tight. It's like he just took Prince's ideas and arrangements and replaced the sounds. A much more successful collaboration than Art Official Age, I couldn't stand how that was produced and it didn't sound anything like Prince music to me.

It reminds of that thread I opened on MPLSound stating it was fucking fantastic.
Thing is, I was on the best weed ever. Ah, the cruelty of soberness.
We love Prince so much, we're ready to defend even his lowest points.

Phase 1 certainly isn't "art", it's a mixtape, and not a very good one.
Some of you should lower your purple kool aid intake, mistaking Joshua Welton's mingling with Pro Tools leftovers
with Prince's pinnacle is a sure sign you're gulping it by the gallon.

Personally one of my favourite Prince albums, although I totally understand why a lot of the 'classic' fans wouldn't like it, with it heavily tapping into current trends. For me, I like it because it's the kind of experiment I was always interested to hear him try, which he never quite did until the Funknroll remix and then the full on album with Phase One.
Throughout his career Prince has always changed with the times (for better or for worse), but he was a bit late to the game with this particular style. He was tapping into current pop trends and imo did it alot better than most of the artists in the charts for whom the EDM/dubstep/trap etc styles are their bread and butter. Taking the kids to school, as it were!
I've always thought that if this album was promoted correctly to the commercial demographic, it would have been a hit (as opposed to sneaking it into stores with zero promotion - a reverse shoplifting approach). Fallinlove2nite and Funknroll were big hits in the context of his later work but the album had potential to be an actual big hit.
If you ever lose someone dear 2 U, never say the words "they're gone". They'll come back.

Has it not occurred to you that the voice you've read my post in is in fact the voice in your head? It's your voice, it bears your tone, and your judgement values. Are you trying to be my friend? Because you've got an interesting way of going about it. I'm ok with this, I can work with this, this is what we do. I do this. (That's an ICP reference. Get it?) Or am I wrong? Are you hurt or offended by something I said? Have I wronged you somehow? Are you upset? Do you feel trolled? As your friend, I feel obliged to inform you that if you said "yes" to any of these questions, you might be misattributing things to me which do not exist. If you don't understand what that means, how about don't sit there and tell me I'm both somehow subjective and also wrong. You can't have it both ways. So what's it going to be, chummer? I am The House. And The House says the door is open. Are you going to walk in here, fuck my shit up, and steal my properties? Ok, that's rude. We could also just chill. If I think I'm someone who thinks they're deeper than they actually are, then clearly I must dig deeper. I died once, true story. Listen... everything I've said in this thread... you must read in a voice with a friendly tone. And before you interrupted me, a youthful jubilence. You're abrasive, I'm sure you already know that. I understand I can be abrasive as well. I can understand you, I need you to understand me. If you don't understand me, we can't be friends. If we can't be friends, then you best get to stepping because you're in my way. Are you good? [Edited 8/17/18 16:46pm]

Meh...not sure I agree entirely but I know what you're saying.

I'm not totally convinced that some of what Josh did is all that different from some of the tricks that Prince used to use in 1999 or SoTT. Of course, Prince did it without a computer but, still, he was no stranger to studio effects and over production either.

Also, there's nothing wrong with MPLSound besides consistency, which ate at Prince's records for over two decades. I don't get the hate for it.

I'm more of a Phase Two kinda guy, TBH. Love the percolating, laidback feel of it. And its more 'Princey', obviously. Phase One has its definite moments, though.

iLike the energy that surrounds last phases of Prince career, among them Ph.1, which is irresistible. It's far from 'greatest album' he made, but that run of songs, especially from new mix of 'This Could B Us' 'till 'June' is just freakin' awesome -- full of life. Besides, who can just play in the studio and pull off sweet little jam like 'HardRockLover'? He makes it look so easy...

I pretty much love all of his albums. (I know folks here would ask me to turn in my fan papers on that alone, but I really couldn't care less.) H&R1 is no different. Always liked it. Xs Face is so cool.

.

I'll say this in particular for this album, to me, IMHO, it stands out as the one album that has the best song openers. Just song after song, launching into powerful, distinct, attention-grabbing intros.
