I know, right. International Lover should have Do Me, Baby subtitled since he plays the chords for it close to half or more in the song. Sloppy lead playing here and there and sevral of the songs are just two chord vamps. Purple Rain isn't even 40 seconds worth...

Contrary to what a few others have said in here, this release is...overwhelming, overwhelming, OVERWHELMING!! It's overwhelming in its soul. Overwhelming in its emotion and craftsmanship. Overwhelming in its sincerity and relevance. And lastly, its overwhelming in its importance to the artist and his undying legacy.
With that, I want to personally thank the Prince Estate for allowing me an opportunity to listen and experience what is in essence the planning and design of a great house being built before I ever get the honor of sleeping in one of its rooms. Gives me great insight into the time and effort it took to become a legend.
Enjoy your weekend everyone.

Wait a minute. Now I'm confused. In one sentence, you say I have no right to judge who is or who is not a real fan, then the next sentence you say if anyone is satisfied with this release based on it being "not complete" then it only contributes to "lowering the standards" of future releases by the estate. Talk out of both sides of your mouth much??

Enjoy your weekend everyone. Nothing is “contrary” here. We’re all just sharing opinions. Peace. "Drop that stereo before I blow your Goddamn nuts off, asshole!"

I think the conversation on this thread proves that age old saying of " you can't please everyone all the time", and this release is no exception. I don't think there will be any future release that satisfies absolutely every fan.

I am thrilled to have this. What an intimate experience to listen to Prince in this way. I think it deserves to be listened to without all the negative baggage associated with how one feels about the estate's release pattern. It is wonderful for what it is, and a unique addition to the Prince oeuvre. I think it will stay that way even when we finally get the more produced releases.

Another reason I think some are denouncing this release is more about it being previously available through bootleggers then about the music itself. If this had never been heard before today, would it still be thought of as "underwhelming" by those criticising it? Because honestly, the more I've been reading through some of these threads the more I've seen descritpors like "we've had it for years" or "I've heard this 20 years ago", but not too many "I've never heard this before, and it's still underwhelming". Just a thought...

Agreed, and it seems that the majority - even on this thread, feel this way. It's an amazing piece of history in Prince's journey just before he became world famous. I actually prefer the demos, and live rehearsals over the produced work.

I don't have the deluxe edition, however I seem to have seen lyrics to Strange "Relations" which also actually does not look like Prince's handwriting. Am I wrong?

I'm with you. The songs may still be in the construction phase during this recording, but they convey a natural spirit and soulfulness that tends to get lost in the production process.

Where are the liner notes? I was so excited to read them. Did you have to buy the deluxe version? I didn't want the vinyl version. I only have the standard cd. Someone please let me know.

Deluxe only, I think. | |

Thanks Silver I was afraid of that. Now it feels like I'll have to rebuy it. I like what I'm hearing at least.

im just grateful to have some new (to me), and somewhat different Prince music to listen to..Of course i wish it were some new, fully developed, unheard before songs. But considering the man is no longer with us, im grateful and hopeful for whatever Prince content i can get at this point..im not gonna pick it apart.

Thanks Silver I was afraid of that. Now it feels like I'll have to rebuy it. I like what I'm hearing at least. Same for me. I like the music a lot, both the piano and his vocals. But the lack of liner notes is disappointing. Do you have to get the deluxe version and is that only available in the combination CD & vinyl package? If so, that’s kind of lame. Anywho ... back to the music ... . All the full length songs are great to me: 17 Days, Mary Don’t U Weep, Strange Relationship, and Why the Butterflies? are top shelf performances. Cold Coffee and Cocaine is the exception, being just ok. . But the other songs, where he sings maybe one verse and a chorus, are disappointing. Purple Rain starts promising, but then he swallows the chorus. Others are similar. . Overall, B+ to A- . Those vocals on Mary Don’t U Weep and Why the Butterflies are some of his best. Throughout his chest singing is richer and deeper than most of his other released work. 17 Days sounds way more impassioned than the B-side. And I like the extra “gone so long” bit in Strange Relationship. "Love & honesty, peace & harmony"

I wonder if he ever played Cold Coffee and Cocaine for Vanity they way he did with Carmen and I Hate U? [Edited 9/21/18 21:40pm] It's a hurtful place, the world, in and of itself. We don't need to add to it. We all need one another. ~ PRN

The highlight of this recording is definitely “Cold Coffee and Cocaine” ”The people that will end up defining ‘Hate Speech Laws’ are the very people you don’t want to define the Hate Speech Laws” — Jordan B Peterson

The hand written lyrics for Strange Relationship doesn't look like Prince's handwriting.

Despite disappointment at the way this has been done - (the tape hiss is dreadful and no liner notes in the CD?!?!?!) loving 17 days and Mary Dont You Weep. 17 days is extremely funky - anyone else notice the rhythm he's using is the same that he later used in 'The Bird'? I think it's unfit to be released except as a free bonus disc to another real and complete album or maybe a book or somethig. The hissing in he background kept reminding me that this came from a freaking cassette.

Exactly! That is because Wendy and Lisa wrote that song as well as all the others. Prince just helped out a bit. You ask Wendy.

It's definitely of historical interest for Prince fans, but that's about it for me. It is hard not to feel disappointed.

Agreed. As I wrote earlier, it's not a particularly great example of Prince's abilities solo on the piano and we all know superior material of the same kind is available. And it is a very rough, incomplete session with mistakes. Above all, it's simply unremarakable by Prince's standards. Most of the songs and piano playing simply go nowhere. But then again this was never even remotely considered as fit for public consumption by Prince himself. This isn't even a legendary bootleg and for good reason.

I get some of the complaints, but to complain about the performance of prince on this is ridiculous. It is what it is. In that moment, in that time. Which the people behind it make quite clear! And in the articles. Relax and enjoy it!
