Your reasons won't matter to them. If sales aren't good, all they'll see is there's not enough interest in Prince's vault material. But you do what you think is best.

Hope you don't have the bootleg. Skipping an official release when you have the bootleg is not cool.

downloading bootlegs is obsolete because everything is on youtube. There are other Prince albums I didn't like and never bought. I don't really care for piano only music

I ordered the CD. I'm not going to follow the price gouging tactics of the major labels, 'jazzing up' releases with fancy packaging, without any actual additional musical content.

Just completed a 1st listen on a streaming service. My random thoughts:

- Still: weird choice, in a way totaly underwhelming...
- ...considering what else must be slumbering in the vaults!
- At the same time: this is of course a fascinating document
- Funking and caressing the piano in a way which sounds fresh and original!
- Some super deep vocals, ocasionally hilarious, too (cold coffey & cocaine)
- 17 days is awesome!

A record I would not have asked for, but to which I think I might be returning more often than expected in the future. Not sure if I am going to purchase a physical copy of this release, though. Deluxe Edition seems pointless, don`t expect the booklet to make a real difference.

If Warner + the Estate had a trick up their sleaves they`d put out Piano & Microphone 2016 before Christmas to form some sort of stronger narrative.

I miss Prince!

And this is why they have his music in a capital one commercial, because when we don't support releases they have to get revenue some other way.

So, anybody get their pre-order yet?

I didn't order it, preferring to instead support my local independent wrecka stow tomorrow by buying it in person on 0-day as I have with every release sold in stores starting with Purple Rain.

As I look at the prices and pictures online, I see my options in store are:

the CD alone, they don't have the price up for this one yet

the LP alone, they list this one as $21.98

the combo, they have it for $38.98

Looking at the pictures, it looks like the combo does not have a separate digipack for the CD, or cover for the LP, I'm guessing they might be housed in the booklet?

To be honest, I'm thinking I would rather have a separate cases for the CD & LP for filing on my shelves than a "photo book" that I don't expect to be impressed by. It'll probably be cheaper to buy them separately without the book too.

If anybody has it yet, please post some photos of how the discs are housed in the booklet.

Got my answer from The Purple Underground! Here's their unboxing video.

I'll be buying the CD today, maybe the individual vinyl (or maybe I'll get the vinyl later).

I'm not having that combo. I do NOT like the way the CD is housed and am NOT impressed by the "photo book".

So glad I found Purple Underground's unboxing, if I got the combo I would not be happy and would still want the individual CD release.

Thanks again, Purple Underground. wink

So, new release day, no new thread on the org and no activity on this one? I know we're pissed about the choice but c'mon, you really want to send the message that we're not interested in vault releases? SMH...

Anyway, I picked up the CD and plan to pick up the LP later. The combo looks awesome when sealed, but, count me as disappointed in seeing the inside in the unboxing video.

Who else went to the store or recieved their pre-orders?

I got my deluxe package yesterday and I love it. Listening brings back memories of getting the new Prince album I just got (official or bootleg) and sitting back and enjoying the sounds. We all need to enjoy life and leave the bitterness behind. We are not in charge of the musical or intellectual right of his musical legacy so we need to acceptthe fact that product will be released whether we like it or not. Happy with some, not so much with others. 4Ever was not my favorite, but I'm happy others thought it was great. Some of us won't be around for many other releases so enjoy and let others enjoy too. The only thing wrong with this release is that some people in the world,a very small minority, had already heard this. Otherwise an excellent release.

Hey Bighead, in the video it looks like the CD could easily fall out of the deluxe. Could it? Or is it held in securely?

The CD is pretty secure. It sort of slips into its resting place. I don't think the packaging is designed to be manhandled the way regular cds are. But there shouldn't be a problem with it falling out.

If it were a box, that included the LP & CD (in their regular sleeves) & a photo book, I would be SO down with that. Glad to know the disc doesn't fall out like it looks, but, I still don't like the package. Looks gorgeous when sealed, but seeing it opened up in the video really disappointed me.

The packaging is a very simple presentation. I agree with that. And you'reright when you say it looks gorgeous. It's not a necessary purchase but it's great that we have choices at this point.

A shameless rip off. It's bad enough they released something from a simple tape copy (surely if this was a studio rehearsal - (he's giving directions to somebody) - a proper master tape should exist?!) but then to only make it 35 mins and not include anything else (like other piano recording sessions around that time?) is a cheek. The booklet should have been included in the standard CD release. If WB wants people to buy CDs still they'll have to do a lot better than this!

Also - all this advertising of a 180gm 'audiophile' LP, well as the source material is tape then this is going to count for absolutely nothing!!!!

I love it too but the one thing I don't care about it the B/W artwork it reminds me of "Come" and I love the Come album but also it reminds me of death as Come was the end of Prince and Gold was rebirth and artwork for both albums fit into that. I know it is knit picking but the artwork reminded me of that from start and I may just shelve that artwork and get something more colorful for cd case. I remind me everything is now in the past. Also it is a nice recording and overall very happy with it. I bought the vinyl and cd separately.

What are you outraged about today? CNN has not told you yet?

It does suck to not get the liner notes in the CD. As a liner note junky, I miss the days when they were the norm.

But I prefer the individual CD & LP releases, and I am NOT going to buy 3 copies... Not. Happening.

If I get lucky and find pirated scans of the booklet online I'll grab them without feeling an ounce of guilt. The liner notes should be in every edition, fk whoever made the decision to make them exclusive to the deluxe edition only. Just sayin'...

I agree this deluxe version is lame but I’m over-all happy this is the first release.

If you order the CD from Amazon, you get AutoRip MP3s immediately for download (and they’re stored in the Cloud for you too). Great for people without CD drives.

And, if you’re so inclined, you can still leave your CD sealed when it arrives in the mail.

Why is everyone such a complainer around here? If they came out with an album with Prince playing the kazoo, I would buy it. This album is beautiful. Im just happy something like this is available. Luv 4 One another, bitchers!

Just been to one of my local record stores and picked up the standard vinyl.

I do feel kind of dumb buying this on vinyl when it's sourced from a cassette (!!) but vinyl has always been my first choice medium.

I'm not interested in the deluxe set. Normally I'm a sucker for a box set, but £12 extra for a couple of pics, a few words, a CD and a bulkier package? How recently do you think I was born? Not only is it overpriced (and pretty pointless to me with no extra musical content), but it's also overkill for this release. It actually harms the release to me, because the content can't stand up to that kind of deluxe treatment.

It's a nice audio snapshot, but little more than that, trying to profess that's it's some recently discovered masterpiece is transparent sales nonsense.

It's certainly nice to have, and I hope it opens the floodgates to countless more releases coming very soon (much more than one per year!) but as a first posthumous release it clearly shows that the estate need to make some money fast.

Edit: And yes, it's ridiculous that the liner notes were reserved for the 'deluxe' version. They should, of course, have been included with the standard version, like every album ever that came before it. Deluxe needs more than liner notes to be deemed 'deluxe' where I come from.

Here's another unboxing video for the deluxe edition.

I notice he comments on the CD not being held in very well, right before he drops it. This is what turned me off the most about the deluxe version.

He's also wrong when he says there is NOTHING with the CD in the CD only version, there is a booklet, it just does not include the liner notes.
