Piano & A Microphone Deluxe Edition (One LP And A Disc) Why?

What is the estate doing and who's making decisions over there? It's bad enough that they are releasing this at all, knowing that this has been in circulation for years, but then they come up with this, for a deluxe edition? Just look at this stupid track listing. This has got to be the most pointless deluxe release in history

They've just seperated the tracks and called it a 'deluxe edition'?

Seriously lame.

He has finished albums that are great but they give us a demo cassette that they found? I want it, but there is so much more. They need a fan advisory board because the decisions they make are terrible.

The deluxe version is the tracks on viny and CD, plus some other stuff.

From the link:

"The Deluxe CD+LP format will include a 12" booklet featuring brand new liner notes written by Prince's then engineer Don Batts, as well as candid shots of Prince including never before seen images."

hyperpessimist

I won't say P+M83 would be my first choice for a release, but I'm OK with it... here's an alternative viewpoint - bear with me, I'm just gathering some thoughts as I type, allright, not stating any "truth" here...

They may be relying on archival material that is ready to go in order to buy time to scan the "deeper" archives properly. Meanwhile, there is clearly a market these days for "DeLuxe editions" with no bonus materials. Lots of artists are re-releasing their classics with new packaging, new photos, new liner notes... It's about fetishizing the artists' narratives, especially the ones that are gone... And people do buy it, the ones who want to re-vitalize their connection with the music they've known for decades...

Speaking of which, in more general terms... I think something shifts radically in one's appreciation of an artist once s/he passes away... knowing the body of work will no longer evolve turns our focus into the legacy... and in the absence of development, we scrape the barrell as we can... archives, karaoke, former associates, bios, dolls, etc etc.... --- nothing wrong with these, they have their role; but maybe I just feel that we're all still craving for that time when he would come out of nowhere with a brand new vision, and are somehow hoping the vault will give us that kind of "fix"... I don't think it ever will, whatever ends up being released will always report to a legacy, a conspicuous absence...

Anyway, just some thoughts.

Peace

Pretty sure that what is listed here as "Disc 1 & 2" are Side A & B of the vinyl, while the one listed as "Disc 3" is the CD. No?

Better than something which is just the tracks separated, yes. You can buy CD on its own or deluxe with CD, vinyl and booklet. I don't see the problem. Me, I'll just get the CD as I have no use for vinyl and not too fussed about the book.

Now, if the problem is the release itself, then that's a different talking point. It's not what I would have asked for but it's what we're getting.

Strange to call it Deluxe though when it isn’t, regardless of this being the release (don’t get me started on that!).

What makes something a deluxe release? Maybe some extra tracks? There is more here than the standard single CD package though, so that seems enough to call it deluxe to me. You only get the book with the deluxe version.

Value for money though? That's a different argument.

This is a release for hardcore fans. But, if they want to do that, then give us a 7CD or DVD set of the 2002 Celebration or many other releases that hard core fans would have appreciated much more than this. The general public will have almost no interest in this and this is not likely to generate any new interest. I would hate to think that WB is purposefully devaluing the value of the vault in order to achieve leverage in the future, but it sure seems like it.

I disagree...

They are pitching this to capture NEW FANS..

The ones who dont realise the strength of his Piano Playing and songwriting

The Ones who see him only as a Flamboyant POP ICON

This release is one I could easily gift to my mother or even my grandson who is learning Piano.

It a stripped back offering curated to display the beauty of his voice and the way

he plays Piano perhaps not technically perfect..but with all the FEELS

of a person who understands Music .

Its not about the established Fans...

lets face it..in the Grand scheme of things we are here forever...

The estate is Looking to Capture a new Audience and get them hip to the diversity of his sounds..

I would agree with everyone sentiments surrounding the way this M&P 83 project is being released. Nevertheless, I will still purchase this release for my collection (let the fleecing of the Prince fans begin). With that being said, I am looking forward to the Tidal release on 9/28. I am sure they will be releasing tracks the world never heard of before (at least I hope that is the case).

I would think a much better way to capture casual or new friends with a piano and mic setup is to release the CD/VIdeo of the 2016 P & M Atlanta concert. This is a great concert though admittedly a bittersweet one. I imagine they eventually plan to relase this if they have a lick a sense, so why release an old obscure P & M recording that might cause confusion among the non-orgers when the concert one is released?

trying to look through the eyes of the uninitiated ..

P&M as fantastic as it is, contains snippets of songs, many of which are stipped SO far back thats its likely a NEW Fan would have no idea of how genius this move was nor would the melancholy in his voice be appreciated ..

My opinion ..dont mind who disagrees

In any case its not as if WE have ANY CHoice...

Are any of these also going to include a digital download? If not, they're worthless. I mean...I still play vinyl. But without a digital download, I can't get it into my computer without going to a lot of trouble to rip it.

Actually, if you don't have a computer with a disc drive (and who does, anymore?), a CD is anything but easy to rip.

A computer without a drive to rip my CDs is useless to me.

The cool thing is, external drives are cheap. If you have any CDs you haven't ripped yet, it's a worthy investment.

So, anybody get their pre-order yet?

I didn't order it, preferring to instead support my local independent wrecka stow tomorrow by buying it in person on 0-day as I have with every release sold in stores starting with Purple Rain.

As I look at the prices and pictures online, I see my options in store are:

the CD alone, they don't have the price up for this one yet

the LP alone, they list this one as $21.98

the combo, they have it for $38.98

Looking at the pictures, it looks like the combo does not have a separate digipack for the CD, or cover for the LP, I'm guessing they might be housed in the booklet?

To be honest, I'm thinking I would rather have a separate cases for the CD & LP for filing on my shelves than a "photo book" that I don't expect to be impressed by. It'll probably be cheaper to buy them separately without the book too.

If anybody has it yet, please post some photos of how the discs are housed in the booklet.
