Very nice. Nearly all of those are favorite Prince songs. What's your concept behind it?

Is this kinda like if you could only have one disc with all your faves on it, what would be included?

The album, Power Fanstastic, is a musical statement testifying to my favourite Prince songs, the ones I keep returning to. They're not necessarily considered his best but all these songs capture me. The sequence tells a story and the mood is hypnotic...

Crystal Ball depicts the haunting desire by Prince to make love, to connect with other souls, while all around bombs explode and hate advances on the right. Amidst the chaotic intro to Joy In Repitition, Prince frequents a club down up on 36th. Up on the mic repeating 2 words, over and over again, was this woman he had never noticed before. For everytime she said the words another one of his doubts were gone. Should he try to rap to her? He thinks so in We Can Funk and starts to play with her mind. He's scared, cuz though they just met there's this energy between them. In A Love Bizarre, Prince wonders if we all want the stuff that's found in our wildest dreams. That's what we are, we all want a love bizarre. Realising that he's been the only one following his own heart, Prince becomes painfully subdued and starts longing for what he doesn't have in If I Was Your Girlfriend. You can almost hear what silence looks like before the opening chords of Anna Stesia. Have you ever been so lonely that you felt like you were the only one in this world? Prince asks Jesus to save him. Late at night when the world's a sleepin', he's still frightened cuz the power's creepin', Power Fantastic is in his life. He's a little apprehensive even though what it is, is what he wants and needs. Still confused and hurt, Prince just has to ask her one more time, what's it gonna be? He realises The Beautiful Ones always smash the picture, always everytime. He's bitter now and can't hold back his desperate anger, you can hear it when he screams in Something In The Water (Does Not Compute) Prince decides to write it in a novel but he doesn't know where to begin. Moonbeam Levels is his fight for perfect love until it's perfect love he makes. When he's happy then his battle will be won. I Wish U Heaven is a beautiful reflection. Doubts of our conviction, follow where we go. And when the world's compassion ceases still I know. For your every touch I thank you so much. For your every kiss, I wish you love, I wish you heaven, I wish you heaven.

Why, you can play what you want to, All The Critics Love U In New York...

Thanks, I like it too and luckily, Boris has mixed it with soul. I love the way he's mixed I Wish U Heaven's pt 2 (blue angel), following on from the album version, and then segued into All The Critics Love U In New York.

What's your essential selection sequenced, Moonie?

Not possible, sorry. You can't capture the breadth (sp?) and depth of his work on one disk. The tracklists some of you have posted are certainly nice collections, but they miss so much. . .

There's no gun to your head, just post a CDs worth of music that you are feeling right now, or think you will feel forever.

This is not about the breadth and depth of Prince's work. This is just your essential Prince selection sequenced, on one disc. If you don't think it's possible for you to do, that's cool.

Off the top of my head:

Joy In Repetition
Sexy Dancer
We Can Funk
Lovesexy
Computer Blue
Live For Love
Willing And Able
Days Of Wild(Crystal Ball version)
Dreamin' About U
Anotherloverholenyohead
17 Days
Condition of the Heart
Partyman(long video version)
Cindy C
Loose
All The Critics Love U In New York

It ain't deep. It may not be his best works. It is funky.

Amazing how no one considers When Doves Cry, Raspberry Beret or Purple Rain to be 'essential songs'.
Personally . I think we are all Boring with No Lives cause all we do is talk about Prince,Criticize and Gossip. I need a Horny Man is what I Need and probably so do most of yas. We are Sexually Frustrated what we R... Amen..!!! - zelaire

Personally speaking, those are the songs that get folks into Prince, not the songs that keep them listening.

NO WAY no how!!! ha ha...Anji...why U bring up ALL the tough
threads? this is gonna take time...ok..let me see-out the
top of my head...without putting these on one tape:

erotic city (long version)
shockadelica
the ride
power fantastic
lets pretend we're married
when we're dancing close and slow
old friends 4 sale
do yourself a favor (prince's version)
how come you don't call me anymore
17 days
sexy mf
private joy
the question of U
she's always in my hair
4 the tears in your eyes

these were picked for the sound and that they aren't quite
the songs most people would chose. i picked these without
putting them down on a tape and mixing them... i might have to rearrange these...MAnnn..what a tough thread.

anji,i like your choices. i gotta do some recording!!!

Come2getheras1

great thread Anji!

This is what I'm feeling right now:

1.When the Lights go down
2.The Ballad Of Dorothy Parker
3.Open Book
4.Extraordinary
5.Pearls B4 the Swine
6.Shy
7.Forever in my Life
8.Paisley Park
9.The Future
10.Darling Nikki
11.I could never take the place of your man
12.Sign o' the Times

The sequence sounds painful but I couldn't seem to make sense of it any other way.

I hope your selection includes the version of 'Power Fantastic' that incorporates the "missing" jazzy intro, Anji!

Before you ask, no, I haven't worked on a personalised disc just yet (but would love it if you sent me a copy of yours!) wink
