Yes, that one, Soul Sanctuary, and A Million Days are my favorites from that time period. Also, I Can't Make You Love Me wasn't his, but boy he sang the shit out of that song. He was clearly feeling those lyrics.

Yeah I agree. I always preferred Bonnie Raitt's version to be honest, but it seems he could really relate to that song.

Disc 2 is a solid listen start to finish, which his 90's albums rarely are, and certainly the rest of emancipation sure ain't. His best ballads though? hmmm.... Is there anything on there that can compete with Pink Cashmere?

"journey 2 the center of your heart" should have been on emancipation. damn it mad

lol

seriously, it's such a great song. i wish he'd decided against all those covers and just
put another 4 of his own songs on the album.

Pink Cashmere is a "best ballad"?? That one was always just "meh" to me. I guess because the lyrics weren't very deep to me. He's making her a coat to give to her when she gets back into town, and he can't wait to get her into bed.

Agreed, but most of the other songs he wrote during that time were the "I miss you, I want you back" songs - A Million Days, Van Gogh, Stone, etc...

*

There were just two covers on Emancipation, right? He definitely should have left off Betcha By Golly Wow - or at least moved it to Disc II. Just strange how he alternated between heartbreak/miss you songs and love songs, but it was probably more about tempo then song meaning.

Good point. I'm always into the music and feel of a song before I even get to the lyrics, I suppose there isn't a whole lot going on in it, although they're decent enough.

I agree - Bonnie's version is the top. His vocals are so intense on the song though, and I love the deep breath he takes at the end of the song. Although, he does "cheese" it out a bit with the lyric, "just hold me close, between your thighs" lol lol And the whole, "how do you want me to do this? In this bedroom slash church, you can guess the offering"....that part wasn't really necessary, but Prince always had to make the song his own I guess smile

Yes, it has a good vibe and rhythm to it. For the ballads though, I always factor in lyrical content along with the instrumental. I think they go together to express the feelings.

The whole thing is pretty much just 3 chords from start to finish, it's pretty impressive what he does with so little. I wonder if the relative flimsiness of the lyrics is why it never found a home on an album. I find it makes it a very replayable song compared to the likes of Adore where I have to have a bit of a lie-down afterwards, it's such a journey.

there were actually 4 covers on emancipation:

betcha by golly wow
i can't make you love me
la la la, means i love u
one of us

it would have been a cool thing, perhaps if he'd included one or two cover songs
as b-sides to the albums' singles. so that in the end, after the album had like five
singles, you'd have a neat little album full of cover songs. and that way the whole
album itself could have been prince compositions smile

OMG, I know, but the lyrics and build up of Adore....just whaaaaa!!! So amazing. I guess with PC, it didn't fit the Batman album which is what he was doing at the time, and then also wouldn't have worked on Graffiti Bridge.....so, in the vault it went.

Oh right....forgot about the others for a minute. So, clearly you are correct - didn't need those covers, as they are forgettable on the album smile Yes, making them b-sides would have been better.

So many of these are so by the numbers and interchangeable though. To my ears anyway.

The ones on Emancipation at least sound different from one another. Soul Sanctuary and Dreamin About U break from that by-the-book Prince template he'd established. I don't hate his ballads, per se, and he's done some great slow numbers I love, but they don't usually light my fire and a shit load of them really run together and sound way too similar to one another. I could make an entire album of his ballads that all sound almost exactly the same.

I disagree on the "interchangeable" thing - Condition Of The Heart sounds nothing like Insatiable..Do Me Baby sounds nothing like The Beautiful Ones...Adore sounds nothing like When 2 R In Love, etc....

*

Count The Days is not a ballad - pretty sure that is about his feud with WB and "counting the days until he is free from the contract".

*

We're also missing Goodbye and Solo as part of the best ballads list. Also love Tangerine - it's very short, but beautiful and heartfelt. And Wasted Kisses was mentioned earlier - very dark, but intense and deep.

Count The Days is indeed a ballad...doesnt hane to be a love/sex song to classify as a ballad... and that song isnt just about WB... i dont agree with the "by the numbers" comment...theres no song on earth like Condition Of The Heart...by anyone...if anything, the batch of cover songs on Emancipation would be songs by the numbers...shit, theyve already been done already by someone else...someone elses numbers, at that

There are no bad songs on Crystal Ball '86/87 and they all deserved to come out at the time but damn SOTT is a better listen. I know it might be because i'm more used to the flow of SOTT but I just don't think the Crystal Ball album works very well.
