Hopefully, Morris can advise the Estate on getting this material out there.
Hopefully... |

Morris recalled: “I said ‘oh my God, Prince, you have to put this out, this is unbelievable, if you put this out you’ll blow everyone away, you’ll be back on top, it’s over!’ And Prince said, ‘no, this is for my kids, it’s for their legacy.'” Hmm...I wonder what year this conversation was. Piano & a Microphone 1983 is the kind of project that you release, when there's nothing left and you have to scape up anything you can find to make an album. You don't release something like this, when there are thousands of unreleased studio tracks sitting on the shelf. |

probably has to do with royalties, technicalities and all that shit.
If Prince was counting his days and if he wanted out... then maybe the P&M was a deliberate way to revisit things while his estate was counted, sorted, eeked out etc.
THat's prob most likely the reason, especially concerning dozens and dozens of recorded material. Suppose a lot of it doesn't have information on it concerning the songwriters, per4mers etc?
I'm pretty sure that's whats going on... but his last projects would've been an OBVIOUS thing to release... especially a couple of the P&M shows on BLURAY/DVD combo (why bother with two releases and be greedy, do it like reputable film companies do) ♫"Trollin, Trolling! We could have fun just trollin'!"♫ |

i'd assumed it was during the mid nineties, but he didn't say. how do we know that some of that material wasn't released on the Purple Rain set a year ago? Whether he'd have been "back on top" or not, I don't know. Being "on top" in that world usually has limited relation to excellence. |

Can this really be true in light of the recent Purple Rain studio sessions book??
There wasn’t a lot from the 1983-1985 years that we don’t know about. |

In an earlier interview he also mentions the 5 songs, but he also says that they have never been released in any format, including bootlegs. This was after the deluxe release.

The Revolution members are probably scrambling for a bigger cut than they are entitled to, making exaggerated claims about their involvment. The estate has to disprove them. Hard to do. How do you prove a negative.
But this has to be sorted out before we see any material from the golden years. [Edited 8/11/18 17:11pm]

Agreed. We all know Prince thought every single thing he did was amazing. But he also knew there were "next level" songs as well. I remember an interview when he's talking about the song 1999, and he mentions songs like that being written on "different plane," or something to that effect. So as much as he liked to spout the "my songs are my children" stuff, there were songs of his he could recognize as special.
The fact that Morris Hayes was around for 25 years means he was very likely more privy to vault songs than anyone else, and if he's co-signing that these 5 tracks were better than anything on Purple Rain, I think that's pretty remarkable. Just the notion that Prince described the released Purple Rain album as B-list songs blows my mind as well.
He mentioned in that lost 2014 Rolling Stone interview that he didn't always give the record companies the best songs, and hinted that the best things he did were still in the vault.
"I’ve never said this before, but I didn’t always give the record companies the best song."
"In the future you could put all the best stuff from one particular time period together and then you can release it. It’d just be like if we found a Sly and the Family Stone album and they saved their best stuff."
Can you imagine? "That's when stars collide. When there's space for what u want, and ur heart is open wide." |

Tell me about it. The upcoming release is almost a crime, and has left me in a state of disgust. I was especially disgusted after I added the deluxe version to my Amazon cart and clicked "place order."

i remember jesse johnson, after berating Prince in a million ways did say in the 80s' that prince had some stuff recorded that "people aren't ready for" which must have been something because in those days, jesse, and the rest had nothing good to say about the man, nothing. As far as Prince's taste in his own music? I'd say it's hit and miss like his albums and his movies, i'm sure he expected a lot more out of many of his albums, thinking they were the greatest thing he'd ever done (think emancipation) doesn't mean it'll sell well or that the public will agree en masse. |

I am guessing it was sometime between 1991 and 1996 because Morris started working with Prince around 1991 and Prince’s son Amiir was born and died in October of 1996. The previously unreleased material on Purple Rain Deluxe came from Warner Brothers' vault as I understand it. Live 4 Love ~ Love is God, God is love, Girls and boys love God above |

morris hayes said something interesting in another interview, which had nothing to do with the music, he said that a lot of people were saying things that weren't true, he mentioned it because he was telling a story of how prince came to his house, got down on his knees and kissed his hand and he said he was glad that it was witnessed by his wife and Tamar who was with Prince. He seems to know how important Prince was and wants the truth about a legend to be perpetuated. that said, i do think the revolution should get whatever they can get, they deserve it even if Prince did most of the work and all they did was pitch in a few ideas to fill out the picture. They deserve it, yes, they do. |
