Does that version even exist on bootleg with Prince vocals? It's something I've wanted for a very long time, I love the NPG version of that track. I've got a couple of crappy live boots of it but would love a clean studio version.

RIP sad

I have never heard a studio version of it either, but I think it has to exist. As you know, he has performd that arrangement live a few times. A glorious song that must be freed.

That "Everybody Wants What They Don't Got" is screaming to be used in a movie or TV show or something.

I really dig that shit!

It sounds like a Chicago or Beatles song, except Prince style.

I haven't heard a lot of songs/versions people are mentioning, but my picks would be "All My Dreams" and "Train."

Do you mean the guide-vocals version he did for Martika? I call it that because he's singing in a key that's not typical for him. It makes sense when you listen to her version next to it--that's her key. But I suppose that's a studio version?

Oh, and a song I forgot to mention: Motherless Child. I know it's a cover and a TV show recording at that, but damn.
And the MUSIC continues...forever...

This thread makes me realize that we probably have most of his great WB era material. The real value of the vault is the post WB era unreleased material that we have not heard and live audio/video. Technically, the Deliverance EP is officially unreleased and that EP is as good as many of the songs on this list.

co sign on Deliverance

I do not really like the Martika version with his vocals. The version that Sonny sang is the one I am referring to. There must be a version with his vocals out there. He has performed that version live a few times and during the Welcome to America tour he would have Shelby, Elisa, etc sing it. That version is one of his best songs both released and unreleased. It must be freed.

Saw "Train" on a couple lists, it's kind of unmemorable to me so I played it again to get a fresh perspective... I don't at all get the appeal.

But then, I hate (what I've heard of) Cosmic Day, and people seem to love that one too.

Isn't it cool, no matter how our tastes vary, there's something for all of us and seemingly fans for every song. cool

I know this was considererd by some to be a failure but I really think Can I Play With You? is very funky! Not my absolute favorite, but given how it hasn't been mentioned yet I wanted to give it some love.

Oh, and some love for Pain as well.

Even though we have all listed some really good songs, it makes me wonder what Mr. Hayes was referring to when he said Prince played him 5 songs in his car that proved that the Purple Rain album was his “B” material from that era. Nothing that we have listed rises to that level.

I think people tend to exagerate that stuff. It takes on some type of special status because it hasn't been released. I can imagine those in the know being stunned that some very good to great stuff wasn't released, and this gives it some type of legendary status. If there really is material that is better than Purple Rain, then it would likely qualify as some of the best popular music ever. I love a lot of his unreleased stuff, but I wouldn't quite put it at that level.

Agreed. I think some of his unreleased material from 1985-1986 stands up to much of what he released in the same time period, but I haven't heard anything from the Purple Rain era that I'd call better than the album itself.
