Confused Piano & Microphone Guys,
I dont understand one thing.
Prince passed away mid way through his Piano & Microphone tour.
So like help me understand something here....why didnt the people in charge of his estate and music release Piano & Microphone 2016.
Why are they releasing the 83 recordings?
Look I welcome any release of our beloved Prince however this just seems strange.
When Michael died...they releases This is It....then didnt release This is it 82.
Can someone please explain to me the logic?

There's already threads for this. Simply put: WB owns the rights to the 80s stuff and want to put something out. Tidal owns the newer stuff and will probably put out P&M 2016 on their service.

. Tidal doesn't own any Prince stuff and never owned any. Prince gave them the distribution rights for certain albums he owned, and allegedly this includes one more that will come out next year. This new album will still be owned by the Estate, Tidal only holds a license to distribute the album prior to a worldwide release (and I think it's far more likely to be a HnR3, than P&M'16). . Friends don't let friends clap on 1 and 3.

From what I can piece together, Warner doesn't own all the stuff Prince made while signed to them but the deal he made in 2014 gave them approval of vault releases from his Warner era. So the estate can never really cut them out of pre-96 vault releases. Now fast forward to today. Warner is about to lose the US rights to a bunch of his albums in a few years. Instead of releasing a deluxe edition that they'll have to stop selling, they licensed this from the estate. The idea being that it's from his most popular period and does a full circle with his life. The last thing he did was Piano & A Microphone. The first posthumous release is Piano & A Microphone. I really think they overestimated the appeal of that.

Because a final tour cd would be considered morbid at this time. If they wait a decade they can bill it as “Princes Final Tour” and not sound so morbid. Honestly that guy in charge listens to leaks and gets his ideas. Surprises will be very rare. Even live stuff will be the most basic hits driven shows available.
