Unseen Prince Playing Piano Footage With Quincy Jones Interview on Youtube

Scott McCullough has posted unseen footage of Prince playing piano. It was shot prior to Diamonds and Pearls Tour at Paisley Park. Unseen Quincy Jones interview must be from Musical Portrait documentary.

So funny ! Maybe somebody should have told Quincy there's also plenty of footage out there "proving" Prince was also "an okay guitar player" and "an okay singer" smile

Scott McCullough said this footage of P on the piano is an outtake from the D&P video collection.

He filmed a lot of stuff around this time, let's hope more surfaces...

Yeah, I personally love Prince's piano playing cos it suited him but I don't disagree with anything Quincy says in this specific clip.

Fact is, Prince was going for Herbie Hancock, not just Little Richard, and that's to be admired. Whether he got there or not is a whole different question.

I think that Quincy is qualified to make a statement like that.

He's been working with some of the greates musicians of the 20th century.

I'm pretty sure that he has seen better piano-players than Prince...

Where's the problem?

I wonder why this video was put together?

Interview was obviously for the "Prince: A Musical Portrait" film, in around '88-'89. But the clip of Prince playing is '91-'92.

.

Shame a longer version of the whole documentary hasn't surfaced.

Q wasn't saying Prince's talent at piano was raw or that there are better piano players (duh). He said he knew a few chords..that's kind of insulting and apparently inaccurate.

Prince only knew a handful of chords? That sounds a bit hyperbolic and insulting to me.

Compared to Herbie Hancock, Bill Evans, Oscar Peterson, et al., Prince is not a superstar piano player. So, Mr. Jones is right about that. But saying such things for a Prince docu was clearly a way of Q to provoke Prince. It appears they were not best friends. Mr. Jones could have said that Prince is a unique piano player (and dito drummer and guitar player) with an own voice and a fine sense of harmony in function of songwriting. He did not do that...

Quincy is right, like it or not. And maybe try to understand what he's saying, because he is NOT dissing Prince. He is stating that COMPARED TO giants like Hancock, for example, Prince (as a pianist) is only OK.

.
Prince was an all-around musical genius, yes, but if you're talking about him purely as a piano player (or purely as a guitar player) and you think he's up there with the greatests (Oscar Peterson, Art Tatum, Bill Evans, McCoy Tyner, Herbie Hancock etc – or Wes Montgomery, George Benson, Gábor Szabó, Pat Metheny, Egberto Gismonti etc.), I'll have to say you're delusional.
.

Prince was a mindblowingly incredible performer and songwriter and a great humanist and a lot of ofther great things – he was a true, one-of-a-kind genius. There's no need to try to credit him with such ludicrous statements as comparing his piano playing to Herbie Hancock's, because you'll just end up making a fool of yourself.

An Honest Man(Under the Cherry Moon), Condition of the Heart, Venus De Milo...P was as good as anybody expressing his musicianship on piano.

Fuck Quincy Jones. He's entitled to his opinion, but who gives a shit!

No one is delusional. I get stating that Prince is no Herbie Hancock. But he basically stated that Prince knew a few chords. That is what I objected to. Quincy is a musical snob and spiteful. As for comparing him to other guitarists, I am not going to go there. People have their particular strengths, weaknesses, things they focus on. Prince spread himself rather thin.

Exactly. Thank you.

Miles Davis on Prince..

He plays guitar and piano and plays them very well.

Prince does so many things, it’s almost like he can do it all,” Davis wrote in his autobiography. “He can be the new Duke Ellington of our time if he just keeps at it.

In order to become a great musician the musician has to have the ability to stretch and Prince can certainly stretch,”

Prince himself described his playing as a "colorist". I think he acknowledged that he was not a virtuoso player. This is the uniqueness of Prince. He is mentioned on the pop world...the rock world...the jazz world the latter is more snobbish and so they call out that he was not a player on the level of Herbie or Bill Evan's...Oscar Peterson etc. Fine...but none of them could come near what Prinxe offered- that one man do all styles convincingly...be one of the greatest songwriters...bandleaders....and vocalists. One man...and side we mention he was truly a virtuoso guitarist?

He was simply untouchable.

I should also add
..Miles Davos called him the Duke Ellington of our time. I recall people dismissed that as his something said during his name droppingest years but he was never bound by what people thought he should say or play he said what he thought...and this is HIGH praise from someone like him...a player. If Quincy appears to downplay Prinxe as a pianist
...what the hell do u think he thinks of MJ?? He was not a musician at all....

Come on man, I believe Quincy is just salty that he didn't get to work with Prince lol He always sounds so butthurt when it comes to Prince, like a little kid that got rejected by a certain kid on the playground.

What a crybaby.

In my opinion Prince plays piano better than guitar.

Just watching the opening scene from Under the Cherry Moon with him playing piano in the night club is some cold shit!

I know of 2 women who had their "musical foreplay" with Prince on piano. What does Q have to offer?
