Yeah, I personally love Prince's piano playing cos it suited him but I don't disagree with anything Quincy says in this specific clip.

Fact is, Prince was going for Herbie Hancock, not just Little Richard, and that's to be admired. Whether he got there or not is a whole different question.

I think that Quincy is qualified to make a statement like that.

He's been working with some of the greates musicians of the 20th century.

I'm pretty sure that he has seen better piano-players than Prince...

Interview was obviously for the "Prince: A Musical Portrait" film, in around '88-'89. But the clip of Prince playing is '91-'92.

Q wasn't saying Prince's talent at piano was raw or that there are better piano players (duh). He said he knew a few chords..that's kind of insulting and apparently inaccurate.

Quincy is right, like it or not. And maybe try to understand what he's saying, because he is NOT dissing Prince. He is stating that COMPARED TO giants like Hancock, for example, Prince (as a pianist) is only OK.

Prince was an all-around musical genius, yes, but if you're talking about him purely as a piano player (or purely as a guitar player) and you think he's up there with the greatests (Oscar Peterson, Art Tatum, Bill Evans, McCoy Tyner, Herbie Hancock etc – or Wes Montgomery, George Benson, Gábor Szabó, Pat Metheny, Egberto Gismonti etc.), I'll have to say you're delusional.

Prince was a mindblowingly incredible performer and songwriter and a great humanist and a lot of ofther great things – he was a true, one-of-a-kind genius. There's no need to try to credit him with such ludicrous statements as comparing his piano playing to Herbie Hancock's, because you'll just end up making a fool of yourself.

No one is delusional. I get stating that Prince is no Herbie Hancock. But he basically stated that Prince knew a few chords. That is what I objected to. Quincy is a musical snob and spiteful. As for comparing him to other guitarists, I am not going to go there. People have their particular strengths, weaknesses, things they focus on. Prince spread himself rather thin.
