That makes no sense at all. the Revolution gets a lot of love all over. No one said that they weren't talented or that they had something to do with his death. The only thing they have been blamed for is being a bit self important..and for that, they would be no worse than Prince himself. All of his associates have profited off his death. I don't think it is unreasonable to question their motives and sincerity sometimes.

Well, the general media got most things wrong about him in life so I see no reason why they should start getting it right in his death. As for blaming members of the revolution for every bad thing that ever happened, well that's an org speciality.

This is pretty much what I am saying.

I don't get this thread! How is it a compliment to put Prince's accomplishments down to hard work? Why diminish his talent? It's like saying about a Nobel prize winning physicist that "He isn't to bright, but he works harder than his peers." Now if the complaint was those people who claim that Prince didn't know what he was doing, it was all instinct, then I would agree. [Edited 7/20/18 4:10am]

Prince himself credited God for his talent and with blessing him with musical ideas. Obviously Prince worked his ass off becoming a better musician over time.

How much of it is God-given (if you believe in that), and how much of it is hard work?

You can't have one without the other to be as amazing as P. Did you ever see the video of him playing the guitar and keyboards at the same time? So awesome!!

Part of it was Prince's creation. Telling people that he dreamed an entire song when he had been working on it for years. Working himself to death so something "spontaneous" could go off without a hitch.

He wanted people to believe he was ordained by God instead of a man blessed with an incredible sense of timing and work ethic.

We are all gifted talents, some are exposed and nurtured into being by others,
Some are nurtured into being by ourselves and some remain dormant. He felt he was blessed with this gift but he never thought that work wouldn’t be required in order for it too bloom. Imo

He didn't always say that. He admitted to working hard at times. He used to say that the reason he did a lot of stuff on his own was because people couldn't work as long as he did (and he wore them out). Keep in mind that Prince probably had some degree of autism. I doubt he wanted to believe that his proclivity to focus on a repetitive task was some kind of brain defect that he himself harnassed through his creativity. He attributed the focus and drive -- to God. But this man also believed others (if they worked hard) could be as great (thus the reason that John Blackwell once stated that Prince's biggest problem was that he couldn't understand that people weren't as talented as he was so he assumed they just weren't working hard enough.)

I am just thinking about that September article I am dreading. Fans know. But here's the deal the god-given talent but boss from hell description seems to imply that his talent was just handed to him from the heavens and that his band was forced to work hard. It doesn't seem to imply that he himself worked hard to acquire that talent. I am probably over-analyzing but I hate what that might imply to those who don't know that he too was working in the trenches with his 'slaves'.

For some, it’s just a case of not being able to call it, because they can’t see it. As fans, sure. We can pore through each and every published interview, video clip and bootleg rehearsal session from him and all associated parties and understand that he demanded no less than the same standard from others that he set for himself. Unless it’s put out there visually for the masses to witness, they’re more likely to interpret what they will from sound bytes or print.

i am not saying he didn't have inherent gifts but those gifts were also burdens. It wasn't just hard on band members who can quit, it was hard on him.

I personally believe it's a combination of hard work & inherent gifts. There are lots of people with talent, some may call 'genius', but do not (for myriad reasons) do the necessary hard work, and become one-hit wonders, etc. Those who do the hard work but do not have that 'thing' that some are born with, are technically amazing, but just don't have that oomph necessary for WOW. Prince did and was both, imho.

I agree. Both blessing and curse.

Really? How has someone like Ida Nielsen or Donna Grantis profited off his death? I suppose you could argue the Revolution and (some) NPG members are as they wouldn’t be touring if he were still alive. But I doubt they’re making that much money off the shows they’re doing and I don’t think the motivation is/was to make money off his death but rather to pay tribute. And maybe for them it’s a way to grieve and deal with his passing.

I am not saying they are all going out of their way to profit off his death. But his death has gotten them attention that they didn't have before he died. Donna and Ida got attention when he was touring with them. But once Prince went solo, the attention teetered off. I imagine it has increased a bit again after he died. Their association with Prince has helped them. All any of them have to do is mention their love for Prince, and mourning prince fans click on their pages and sometimes start following their music and shows. I am not saying they don't mourn Prince. Who knows? THey might. They might not. But most of them don't avoid the Purplearmy label.
