Having inspected the hat at the recent exhibition it appears the chains aren't made of metal, but rather some sort of cushioned material painted gold, so it's quite feasible he sang through them without any interference or potential injury. I think the retail version that was available at the NPG store did at least have hard plastic chains, but the genuine article was different and more suitable for performance. Whatever, it still looked great though. | |

The chains are definitely not aluminium in the hat displayed at the exhibition, which purports to be Prince's hat for performance.
Mayte's hat which she wore while pretending to be Prince at the opening of the Act 2 gigs may well be plastic or aluminium as she never sang through them. * [Edited 7/30/18 1:45am] | |
