'Dirty Mind' Album Review

Prince's album 'Dirty Mind' from 1980 is a masterpeice. Although not as great as Purple Rain, Dirty Mind is one of his best. From the 'fuck you' look on his face on the front cover, to When You Were Mine which Cyndi Lauper covered... You know what, I'm going to get into this right now because there really is no reason to just stand here talking some stuff.

The album starts with Dirty Mind, likely the most popular track on the album. Sure 'When You Were Mine' was some popular shit with Cyndi Lauper, but with Prince this was the most popular track. It sounds great though. Listening to it again was so good! It kind of is telling you what this album is about. Well, it's really just about sex, but it still sounds good. Then he kicks into 'When You Were Mine' which makes alot of sense when you play it after 'It's Gonna Be Lonely' from 'Prince (1979)'. Then 'Do It All Night' is about sex basically. Gotta Broken Heart Again is kind of a follow up to When You Were Mine and is the only ballad on the album.

'Uptown' is about a place with no racism, sexism, or any ism there is. It's all about being there. 'Head' has vocals from Lisa Coleman and Prince figured if Lisa can say these, well, rather explicit lines she can do anything. 'Sister' is about his sister having sexaul intercourse with him, and 'Partyup' is about just partying. 30 minutes is as long as Dirty Mind goes for

I LOVE this album. I especially love his falsetto voice that he uses on this album. My favorites have to be "Dirty Mind" and "When You Were Mine" - just such great songs. The album after this, Controversy, is also a terrific album.

I was 10 when this came out. I always played side 2 as side 1. It was years until I realized that Uptown was not the lead track. I still play it that way. It flows better for me.

This is what you want...This is what you get.

North Arm Drive Home Studio

Hollywood Sound Recorders

Somewhere In Uptown
Jamie Starr

I love Dr Finks synth and solos on Dirty Mind, and his solo on head. He kills it

I think Head might be the most popular song from the album though.

UPTOWN his first lyrically realized utopian vision. I've been going uptown ever since.

So much of it feels like For You/Prince yet with an edge of danger

it is always wonderful to do a playlist mixing in the outtakes. (No B sides until Controversy)

Gotta Stop Messin About

Rough
Lisa

have we heard Big Brass Bed yet? Bulgaria? Eros?

I still would love for Morris Day/the Time to do Party Up

and a thanks 2 Joni Mitchell

I love this album also.

Prince sang Party Up on his first Saturday Night Live appearance.

Underwear and all.

I remember watching this in real time.

Link to his first appearance on SNL. Party Up.

SNL, as well as its musical performances, were so raw back then. Them running off stage reminds me of "one song and split" from Purple Rain.

Yes, and it makes me want to re-think my choices for what to wear tomorrow. (Black underwear, 80's leg-warmers, and fringed boots....Hmm) Probably have everything but the darn leg-warmers!!
