Is most of the vault already out in bootlegs?

There seems to be discussion about maybe most of the vault being out in bootlegs already? But is this just an assumption by older associates and fans? Most of the bootlegs I have heard on youtube are from the 80's and 90's? Did Prince tighten up security and the interest lessened in later day unreleased material so that is why post 90's bootlegs are hard to find? Or did he record less, and there isn't much post 90's unreleased material? ]

Sidenote--Limited releases need to be placed in compilations as well. There seems to be more of them in later years.

No.

Hardly any of Prince's post-96 unreleased recordings have leaked at all. Then you have the remaining 80s to early 90s tracks and live recordings.

He tightened security after 95 but was still recording at a high rate. Morris Hayes recently confirmed Prince recorded 10 unreleased albums between 2010-14 alone. One of these, Welcome 2 America, Hayes produced.

I feel that there is bound to be a number of songs we haven't heard like Deliverance. But when people say he recorded this many albums, some of them we know we're just different configurations of tracks that we have heard. With the odd track we haven't heard at all.

You realize Deliverence wasn’t really a vault track it was an unfinished track an engineer basically took & finished. Prince never heard those songs as they are

I'm curious as to who the fans were that she was speaking to over skype. Was it regular fans such as most of us (which will be quite disappointing), or was it the so called 'elite' that is talked about on here who access to a surplus of additional unreleased material (hopefully).

Are we going to have this thread every bloody month? How about you do some actual effort first and compile a list of known outtakes and put next to it the link to the song's entry on PrinceVault and whether it has been bootlegged or not. I mean, you seem to care about this, right? You could even make it a Google doc and open it for input by others.

The engineer remixed all of the Deliverance tracks but that doesn't necesarily mean they were unfinished in Prince's mind. On the contrary, Prince's unaltered versions were on an early configuration of the Planet Earth album as the Man Opera.

Prince's original version of the title track had the Twinz on the chorus with Prince's vocals alone. Ian Boxhill added the cheesy gospel choir and some additional keyboards.

Exactly. She only worked with Prince for a fraction of his career. I'd really like hear from other, later engineers.

Susan thought 'Adonis & Bathsheba' was a turkey so clearly has questionable taste.

Susan only speaks about music put out during her time there. This of course is typical of most of his associates. I bet she just assumed that if all her 80's contributions were out there in bootlegs then therefore all his vault music must be.

But that is the fraction of his career that she is talking about, and what most are interested in hearing from.

As to Bart's Google doc suggestion, that works for the songs that fans know about (and hence feature on Princevault), but that says nothing for music that might have been recorded and isn't on Princevault.

I am not sure that where the vault is concerned that the 80's is the only period people are interested in. The media just refers to the music in the vault in a more general sense. Record companies may only be in into the WB era stuff but I am not sure the general public is thinking unreleased 80's stuff when they hear about the vault. BEcause the bootlegs are already out there, I am more interested in hearing later day unreleased music and having access to cleaned up bootleg material than folks digging for 80's tidbits that weren't even good enough to be bootlegged.

No, for sure. I'm most interested what he was recording around the time of The Rainbow Children. But like everything with Prince, people's interest lies mostly in his 80s period.

That was a fascinating period with several unreleased projects we know of. I'm particularly interested in that period as well as 2010 onwards but all the post-80s material has major appeal for me.

The 80s material is best for more commercial releases but something really needs to be established to service the hardcore. Who else is going to pay premium prices for that unreleased album from '98? Or 'Welcome 2 America' as just one other example? Or even know and care about that kind of material? Yet it likely accounts for more than half the total contents of the vault.

I think there are some definate time frames of How Much Relative Material Is Out There.

Most stuff from his Pre-Getting-Signed-To-WB Period is out.

Likewise, his stuff from 1978-80 is pretty well-mined, i.e., The Rebels Sessions, the out-takes from the FOR YOU and PRINCE albums, etc.

I do think, however, his stuff from 1980-1982 is super under-mined, for whatever reason...there is a lot of stuff we haven't heard.

The stuff from 1983-1990 is 95% out there, I think....but the man was so prolific that there could be upwards to at least 25-50 songs from that period not out.

1990-95 is probably pretty well-known already...but the stuff Post 1995 is barely known....

Just my thoughts...

It's only your ego and boredom with Legos that is making you read any post on the Org, Bert.

I think we should! In fact, I think a thread like this should be started on the third day of each month. That way we can use it as a reminder for all the stuff we were supposed to do on the first.

It'll be like, "Hey - an 'Is most of the vault already out in bootlegs?' thread! That reminds me - time to go to the Legos Store and see if they got in anything new!"

Or "Hey - an 'Is most of the vault already out in bootlegs?' thread! That reminds me - rent was due a couple days ago!"

Or even "Hey - an 'Is most of the vault already out in bootlegs?' thread! That reminds me - time to post something snarky on the Org!"

That's so funny!

Don't forget about a thread to cut down Emancipation to a single CD! Everyone loves that one - hours of fun!

In fact after years of avoiding such a crazy notion, this week for my latest gym routine, I cut down Emancipation to a single disc of all the funky numbers and it works - blooming amazigly!!!

I love it on the .org when everyone is so happy!

In the interview I read she specifically said that she was talking about elite collectors and that she didn’t know how much we mere mortals have.
Personally I think there probably aren’t that many 80s songs that we don’t know about, but there’s still plenty to look forward too - as it’s been mentioned before, most music post 96, but also protege songs with Prince’s vocals (I really want those!), better sounding versions of things we have, hopefully some 80s music we haven’t heard yet and the full Cosmic freaking Day!
