Prince hired the wrong people most of the time but he was also terrible at business.

Signing the impossible to meet deal with Warner so he could brag that he was the highest paid. The HITNRUN model where he'd go for a quick upfront payday on a single album instead of nurturing a long term relationship that could pay bigger dividends down the road. Burning down his digital footprint. Letting albums he owned go out of print. Putting blind trust in his tour managers. Bragging about a million a show while his peers were doing laps around him. Being completely disconnected on how his work was distributed. The Tidal mess where he was swindled by Jay-Z's woke Black Power rhetoric.

He was a visionary but anybody with a bit of business finesse could have leveraged his gift into everlasting $$$ and creative freedom.

when prince did the interview where he was asked about MJ's situation and he replied

"i'm too close to that", that to me was an admission of i'm not in control of my own stuff

who am I to comment. i think he was being transparent and no one listened.

Do people have control over their own existence/life/death? I say yes they do.

We all make decisions in our lives that are related to death. We don't walk out in front of speeding cars. We quit smoking, or not, etc etc. I am talking about free will here. You are adding modifiers and asking me to explain the changed statement. I was generalizing. We are all going to die, of course. It comes with the birth certificate.

Unless one is 100% fatalist and believes that everything in life is pre-ordained by another power totally outside of ourselves, I think it is safe to say that we have control over many parts of our lives, even those that can change our deaths.

I don't have an opinion on what Prince said about Michael Jackson's situation, don't even know what situation you are referring to.

People who are in control of their situation (financial, anyway) pay their property taxes on time - or work out a plan to pay them so it stays out of the papers. Just sayin'.

We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

natural disasters, miscarriages, chronic illness and acute illness are ways people aren't in control of their death

however now that i know you were generalizing i can see better where i think you were coming from. Thx for helping me to understand what you were saying in your post.

And my statement about Prince and Michael wasn't intended to anyone in particular, i think it was posted

prior to your post.

I just don't think he cared enough, he knew he could pay off any debt with a show if needed. It might not have been how you or I choose to live but it seemed to work for him. Well, until it didn't...

In New Orleans, you can not pay property taxes for 3 years - BUT anyone else can pay them, and it goes on record. If you don't pay before your deadline, they get your property. I have no idea if Minneapolis/Chanhassen has anything like that.

Think about it. This man's music leaked constantly. How much control did he really have?

Probably as much as can be expected when you have lots of people working for you. Happens to all the big names. As for not being a good businessman...maybe...maybe not. I remember a Larry Graham talking about how he was getting paid far more with Prince than with any label. The man fit so much into his lifetime and was changing business too...and talking chemtrails...raising the consciousness...which no totalitarian dictators want...which is why I believe he was killed.

The great thing is that Prince has grown since his passing. He knows all now. And there is a way to be close to him. But that takes WORK. And therapy is not where it’s at. It never has been. Prince was always wiser than some therapist so why should he give his power to one?

Well considering he died battling drug additction, Prince is a fallable human being. A musical genuis sure, but we all could use a little help sometimes.

I think most people feel that way though. Many people say things like that, even if they aren't super religious. An admission of mortality and lack of control over when when we die. Acknowledging the flow.

I think he controlled a great deal. More than most artists really. He just spread himself too thin. No man is an island. His trust issues are the stuff of legend. Overall, I think he did great. Managing his public image the way he did and limiting his availability enhanced his longevity I think. At the end he was a certified legend after a 40 year run.

And I'd bet good money that some of the "leaks" were of his own doing. I'm almost 100% certain the whole Black Album/Lovesexy controversy was manufactured for publicity.

All human beings are fallible. Most human beings though don’t have their life, their every word and action dissected and analyzed to death.

It's from the interview Neal Karlen did in 1990 during the Nude Tour. And the next thing Prince said was: "but as long as you leave me here, I'm going to cause much ruckus!"
I think he kept that promise.
