That really sucks. Even worse than releasing deluxe editions of a cd, cause you can download the newly added songs.

There are 2 options: not buying the new one which leaves you with an incomplete and partly incorrect book or paying for it again.

I really love to read his next book, but will I buy it when I can expect an expanded and updated version of that one so soon after the original version?

Probably I will

New content is the norm for alot of paperback releases. The good thing is that the price should be a good bit cheaper than the original hardback.

It feels a bit too fast as the contents still feels fluid or in flux.

In this new version there is apparently:

...over two dozen new and updated studio sessions, [sic], up-to-date never-before-revealed information about his unreleased outtakes and much more.

Why was this detail omitted from the first pressing as I doubt this information all of a sudden came to light out of nowhere?

This does render 'incomplete' the first book many bought on the basis believing it was complete and definitive.

New interview are fine for those who are interested in such things, yet any omissions and corrections should really be given as a free pdf for people to download.

I don't know what the original was, but this one is $33, $60 for 2, $6 to have it personalized by having your name in the credits of the book. I PDF'd the first one, might wait on this one, too.

It's listed as $25 for the preorder on Amazon. Hopefully that price will come down some since it's a paperback.

At least there is going to be more pertinent content than just the standard "with a new forward by so n so" that happens with most 'now in paperback' releases. I was just shocked that it seems so soon. Maybe its the standard ppback schedule but since its always in the purple news feeds still etc makes it seem like still relevant as the hardcover version to be having another release.

Not too happy about this either. If we were a year+ out from the hardcover, then I wouldn't see it the same way but we are just barely over the 6 month point. Geesh, I was looking forward to collecting a series here, not having to repurchase the same basic book with a little added info. How disappointing confused

Welcome to "the org", Mumio…they can have you, but I'll have your love in the end nod

When the paperback comes out, it will be 12 months since the hardback. If Duane has managed to uncover new information and secure new interviews during that time, I'm glad that he's including it. I've pre-ordered on Amazon for £15.95, and if there's a third edition next November, I'll do the same again.

Mm, interesting. I just finished reading the hardback about 10 days ago. I liked the book quite a bit, but I can't see it being the kind of thing I need more of. I mean, it's just a log of studio sessions with random anecdotes and a few supporting stories. If it were a detailed biography and you could get a bunch of new, juicy information that wasn't in the original, I could understand being interested, but... er, it seems like it's just going to be "new" info like Prince recording until 3:00am on January 8th, 1984 instead of 1:00am. Give this a pass!

By the way, what's the deal with Per Nilsen's Dance, Music, Sex, Romance? I bought that in paperback in Vancouver years ago for about $8, and now I want to order it on Amazon and every copy is, like, $100. Can it really be so rare?

They really should release the extra chapters for free as a PDF for owners of the first edition.

I got two sides... and they're both friends.

But, I'll have to know more about the "updated & expanded" parts to buy a 2nd copy.

I wish the new info was in a separate supplemental edition or download. I loved the book but since it is very statistical, I prefer not to read it again. I hope the “new info” is easy to find without rereading the whole book. That would be annoying if the new info is just a few short paragraphs here and there burried in with the rest of the book. I understand new info came forward after publishing, and that is great. Just don’t wanna have to work too hard to find it.

See now, this makes me reluctant to buy the next book in hardcover if I know a paperback U&E is right around the corner. It's not good business.

I want to support Mr. Tudahl's work, but as y'all say, we need that PDF update.

Well... I don't know what I'll do about this. The price on the paperback is HIGHER than the hardcover (at least on Amazon). I love the book, but paying the full price for whatever is new (if I choose to buy the paperback)--I'm just not sure I'm doing that. Now, I see that it is currently listed as the #1 new release in the soul music category (for whatever that's worth), and I encourage anyone who hasn't gotten the book to do so... I'm just not sure I'm going to buy it again, at that price. I can probably wait and see what becomes available over time.

It would be nice if the additional material were made available in some other way.

Thank you! I am really excited about this expanded update. The hardback was published in November 2017 and once the book had been out for a few months, the publisher came to me and said that they planned to release the paperback version in November 2018. I explained to them that once the hardback version was published, a number of additional people who worked with Prince saw it and agreed to speak to me so I offered to update the paperback to get this new information out there. I told them that I think that an expanded and updated version would be much better than just the regular paperback and they seemed intrigued. Once the publisher approved of the idea, I took three months off from work and did the follow up interviews, added the new dates, new songs, new quotes, new sessions and updated whatever I could to give as much value to this project as possible. This isn't just an extra chapter written to seem bigger, I went through every page and added whatever new content I felt fit including over two dozen dates that are completely new or updated with information.

The paperback will be released on the 1 year anniversary of the publication of the hardback. I'M TRYING TO FIND A WAY TO GET A DISCOUNT FOR THE PEOPLE WHO PURCHASED THE HARDBACK COPY and hope to have details soon. To those who are excited about this expanded version, I'm also offering a way to get a signed and numbered copy of the paperback as well as getting your name in the expanded version of the book (the details of that are on DuaneTudahl.com).

The hardback was my first book and is still my baby. I am very proud of it and it still stands on it’s own, but there is new content in the paperback that is really worth getting as well. My goal is to make sure that Prince’s career is documented as completely and accurately as possible and so I had a choice of either sitting on the new information and agreeing to just reprinting the hardback as a paperback with no changes or finding a way to get the new details out to everyone. I chose the extra work of adding the content because I know I would want to know more about Prince’s creative history.

I’m grateful for all of the support. I’m honored that so many people have enjoyed this project of passion and that the outpouring for new material has been so positive. I’m working hard on future books and the positivity and energy that everyone is offereing has been inspiring.

I can’t wait to get this out in November to celebrate the 1 year anniversary of the publication of the hardback.

Thank you for giving us the skinny on that Mr. Tudahl. I like that you're trying to engineer a discount for those who've bought the hardcover. I suppose my only other concern is, do you envision this situation happening for every book, or are you known and trusted by everybody enough now that you can expect to get all the goods the first time 'round?

I don't know but it depends on if new material surfaces after the publication. What will likely happen is that every other year I'll hopefully be putting out a new book and on the odd years, the paperback will come out. If there is new material that is intriguing, I'd like to include it in the paperback, but my goal is to make the hardback as complete as possible. I hope that people want to get the hardback version when it is released, but if they'd prefer to wait until a year until the paperback comes out or until their library gets a copy, I understand. My goal is to get the information out there and do my small part in expanding Prince's legacy. I hope I can continue doing that in a way that is enjoyed by fellow fams.

Thanx again for the support!

And thank you again for the info. I for one look forward to having these hardcovers lined up on my shelf! I noticed the cover art is tailor-made for simply changing the photo, album name, and year each time... wink

I got the original hardcover and I don't really feel like paying $63 for an extended paperback version. It sucks a little though that I now have an incomplete version of the book and not the definitive version. Would be nice if people that own the original version could at least download a pdf of the new information.

Thank you for this. I haven’t decided yet whether I will get the paperback, but the hardback is the best Prince book I’ve ever read.
I am looking forward to the next one, though. 82? 86? Whatever, it will be worth it.

LOL. I know you are probably joking about rushing it out (spent 20 years writing it! lol) but that made me smile.

I detailed the journey of the updated book above and I'm working hard to offer a discount for the people who've already purchased the hardback. I'll know more about that soon.

The book comes out in November 2018 which is 1 year after the hardback was published and the pre-sale price for the paperback book is actually $25 which is $13 less than the hardback. Any extra cost covers shipping, handling and tax.

Amazon is offering it for $24.95 in the US and I'm working to find a way to get a discount coupon if people want to order it through the publisher.

The hardback is still an amazing book, but as I detailed above, once it came out, several people who worked with Prince were available to interview and I had to chose to either add their stories into the paperback or ignore the new revelations and simply publish the paperback without any new content. That would have been easier for me to do that, but as a fan, I wanted to give everyone all that I could so I took off work for 3 months and added the new information.

This isn't just an extra chapter written to seem bigger, I went through every page and added whatever new content I felt fit including over two dozen dates that are completely new or updated with information. My goal is to help extend his legacy into the next generation so I decided that getting the information out there was more important than just spitting out a generic paperback.

Hope that helps explain the book and the new contents. I'm excited to get this out there and to work on future volumes. Thank you again for all the support.

I will buy it on kindle. A discount 4 original buyers would be nice but if not I'll buy it anyway. Some people may not realize that this is a labor of love, probably totally unprofitable if you counted working hours spend on it vs. money made off the sales. It's worth supporting.
Just one thing Duane if I may: I was really sad that my kindle edition didn't have an index at the end and I offered a paper version to a friend and just visited her and realized her book did have an index. It can be super useful if you wanna research one particular song and I'd really love my "paperback" kindle edition to have one wink

The kindle didn't have an index? I didn't go through the kindle to check it but that isn't right. A lot of work went into getting the index right, so thank you for that info. I'll look into that. One of the fun things is being able to see what is covered in the index and then looking it up in the main text.

Thank you for the update and the support. Seriously this has been a blast and I love that so many fans/fams have come to me about how it touched them. That really does make it all worth it.
