What should be on a 1996-2016 "best of" compilation? Paisley Park should release a 1996-2016 "best of" compilation on double vinyl, single CD, download or streaming collection, etc., as a Part 2 to Warner Brothers' early 1990s singles compilation, to focus people's attention. Prince put out a lot of subpar, bland music in his last decades, but many gems - released as digital downloads, one-off singles, standout tracks on otherwise failed albums - got lost in the shuffle. There are more than enough lost classics for a double vinyl as good as anything he released in the 1980s. What should be on it? I'll keep my list here, will add/edit in coming weeks: Free Urself Future Soul Song Come On Supercute Silver Tongue Somewhere Here On Earth F.U.N.K. Exactly. That is why we need "best of" Part 2.
The general public will only care about the 1980s stuff if Paisley Park does not reframe his second half career, focus peoples' attention. Many tracks were released in digital-only formats and aren't even available anymore. I want to hear them from quality vinyl.
Noone will care about those, except hardcore Prince fans who already have them. A Best Of Part 2 might help build interest for Prince's second half career; those re-releases and vault 1996-2016 could follow after that. Personally I am very interested in hearing the last unreleased album he did with MonoNeon. I am much less interested in the 1983 piano and microphone album or repackaging of tracks that have been out as bootlegs for decades.
It makes total sense. It is very necessary. As it stands, WB's compilations define Prince's career.
Paisley Park should not leave it up to Spotify to define Prince's second half career. The Best Of Part 2 should also not just include "singles", but especially overlooked gems, tracks that fell through the cracks, that had very limited release and promotion, that never got the attention they deserved, maybe even including a few vault tracks, unreleased alternate or long versions, etc.

That is a start. I really hope that people who are his fans of the 80s would be open-minded to listen to some of the songs in the 90s until his last official release as I had. People are missing out if they refuse to listen to his songs passed 1988. There are a lot of songs I revisited to that I since like and appreciated it. I felt bad because I was highly critical of his releases after the 80s and I made my points on here. But gosh I wish I express more appreciation when he was alive. | |

I would not buy a greatest hits. In fact I have not bought Prince4ever... That music is already available and to choose.. I only have one life and the vaults are full of post 1996 new material ... it's my opinion but I respect yours...In the vaults there are songs as good and better that we heard..THINK ABOUT IT

If there is à greatest Hits from Sony, it has to include TMGITW, or it would be nonsense to release it. GOLD and I HATE YOU were also top Ten Hits So they absolutely have to clear the rights to that album. . Hits from Musicology and 3121 too. There is something to be done and that could be interesting to the général public. I saw back in 2008, in à wreckastow, à Guy looking for a Greatest Hits from Prince. Hé specifically asked me for Musicology and TMBGITW. . They also could clear the prince version of LOVE THY WILL BE DONE. . Other than that,BETCHA BY GOLLY, HOLY RIVER and THE GOOD LIFE, were also top 20 Hits. |

I think the estate/warner bros should release albums to three key markets: one to the collectors, one to the mass, and to the casual listeners. Someone mentioned on that 1983 Piano and Mic thread that is the way how Bob Dylan's albums are getting released. The estate surely needs some help and ideas. | |

Doing a best of post-WB would be super difficult since there's so many songs and certain eras' production doesn't groove together. Plastic production only sounds good when paired with other plastic production. Here's what I came up with when limited to a single disc. 1) New World (Emancipation) 2) 3121 (3121) 3) Jam Of The Year (Emancipation) 4) What Do U Want Me 2 Do? (Musicology) 5) Tangerine Extended Mix (Rave in2 the Joy Fantastic) 6) So Far So Pleased (Rave in2 the Joy Fantastic) 7) The Work Pt. 1 (The Rainbow Children) 8) In This Bed I Scream (Emancipation) 9) Family Name (The Rainbow Children) 10) S.S.T. (S.S.T.) 11) Groovy Potential (HITNRUN Phase Two) 12) A Million Days (Musicology) 13) Beautiful Strange (Rave in2 the Joy Fantastic) 14) Last December (The Rainbow Children) Obviously that's missing a ton of stuff. Resolution, F.U.N.K., Hide The Bone, Black Sweat, Dance 4 Me, Sticky Like Glue, etc, etc, etc. But I think it's a pretty good snapshot of what Prince was post WB for people out of the loop. | |

They could make some great compilations of that period.

I think that a 1996-2016 best of compiliation would need to have an older album as a "companion piece". Think something along the lines of MJ HIStory Disc 1.
Over the next few years, the marketplace will be littered with official and unofficial releases, bootlegs and what not. WHile ANOTHER hits reissue would seem redundant, there is always a market for Hits style releases. Using the MJ Disc 1 approach, package the biggest hits of the 1980's over x amount of tracks and make Disc 2 the "new" stuff (new to the casual Prince 1996-2016 material fans anyway). He/WB did this approach with the HITS 1,2,3 and it covered a decent chunk of his work from 78-93. "Old man's gotta be the old man. Fish has got to be the fish." | |
