What did Prince have in mind when he sang about "fancy clothes" in "My Name Is Prince"? Consider the lyrics from "My Name Is Prince":
Big cars and women and fancy clothes
Now Prince had always dressed stylishly and flamboydantly, all the way up to 2001 (this song was released in 1992). Maybe Prince was referring to those who dress pretenciously trendy and do so desperately to be seen as "it"? Prince is suggesting that he wears the clothes and enjoys the lifestyle in a self-aware way. Ultimately, he knows it won't offer him redemption at a deeper level. The 'face' comment may or may not be a dig at Michael Jackson. | |

I think it's just a general lyric about the superficiality of fame, consumerism etc and not directed at anyone in particular (other lines in the song could be though). | |
