What did Prince have in mind when he sang about "fancy clothes" in "My Name Is Prince"?

Consider the lyrics from "My Name Is Prince":

Big cars and women and fancy clothes
Will save your face but it won't save your soul

Now Prince had always dressed stylishly and flamboydantly, all the way up to 2001 (this song was released in 1992). Maybe Prince was referring to those who dress pretenciously trendy and do so desperately to be seen as "it"? I also thought that Prince may have been addressing Michael Jackson, who was performing in gold leotards and military chic at the time.

It probably just sounded good, but, in reality, he embodied that exact image in those lyrics during that time lol. It’s all rock n’ roll, as he once said.

Prince is suggesting that he wears the clothes and enjoys the lifestyle in a self-aware way. Ultimately, he knows it won't offer him redemption at a deeper level.

The 'face' comment may or may not be a dig at Michael Jackson.

I think it's just a general lyric about the superficiality of fame, consumerism etc and not directed at anyone in particular (other lines in the song could be though).

It's self-referencing. Just be4 those lines he sings:

'My name is Prince, I don't want to be king
Cause I've seen the top and it's just a dream'
