LOVE AND SEX Appreciation Thread!!

The mind boggles that Prince kept this gem of a tune in The Vault and never released it.

Can you imagine how insane a live version of this track with the fully complemented Revolution would have been on the Purple Rain Tour???!!

People can bitch about the PR Deluxe rel, but this song is one of the reasons I'm glad it was released

It is WILD, I love it, love the theme, the Upper Room ie Heaven, sex in the afterlife

Irresistable Bitch Possessed Love & Sex on the PR tour would have been wild

This one certainly could have opened a 'Purple Rain II'. Great song, classic Prince!

One of the highlights on Purple Rain deluxe. I agree this would have been a great album opener for an alternative follow up to Purple Rain.

Not the same song. Just same title.

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

When I first heard the title ‘Love and Sex’ I thought that no song with such title could possibly be a good one. Boy, was I wrong... and it turns out I was wrong twice!
Together with We Can Fuck, Possessed, Father’s Song and Electric Intercourse it made the PR re release worth it for me, despite all its flaws.

It is a fun song. I sorta wish it was a live band take, but even as a one-man show it's pretty amazing. There's an aggressive nature in his vocals that makes it really fun. Reminds me of his vocals in "IT".

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

Okay, I admit that I wrote my post without having listened to both songs in a while. I listened to them, I know you're right, but I still prefer the Sheila E song.

great song...Prince singing/screaming the vocals like his hair is on fire... the tumbling drum programming... wondering if God approves of sex in heaven... Only Prince

I've only listened to this a handful of times since PR:Deluxe was released, and was never all that impressed by it. The mix seems a bit muddled from what I remember, but everyone here seems so enthusiastic that I'm gonna go give the song another shot.

People (me included) bitch about the way Purple Rain Deluxe was produced (primarily about sourcing the outtakes from cassette copies, but also about the bad remastering of the original album), not about the outstanding songs such as 'Love & Sex'.
.
I love the track too and I'm glad it came out, but I still think it was a huge mistake from WB to put these out in poor quality and in such a cheaply produced package, instead of waiting another half (or even a full) year and doing it properly.

Absolutely love this song! I listened to it so much last summer that I associate it with summer. The vocals, the drums, hell yes.

U fall in love 2 fast and hate 2 soon

Do I ever agree...another example of his confidence in himself that he could shelve a song this good.

there's some amazing synth lines all throughout this joint too... it seems like so much work went into creating this sing...i know his throat, chest and head had to be hurtin pretty bad after recording it...even the adlibs and background vocals are intense...after all that effort and such great results, if this song was finished before the movie and album, somebody fucked up by not including it in both... "that's right..."

I certainly don't mind admitting that I was bitching about the quality. If I would be in charge of releases I would feel a moral and professional responsibility (in fact: a duty) to do things the right way that would honour Prince's legacy because I'm passionate about his work and would be equally passionate about making sure it reaches the largest possible audience and would gain the highest recognition. Putting out gems like 'Love & Sex', 'Wonderful Ass', 'Computer Blue' etc. in subpar quality is disrespectful and not helping to gain more recognition of his genius.
And I'm saying this even though I'm fully aware that Prince himself didn't care that much about sound quality – he was primarily a creative artist, and creative geniuses are seldom the type whose mind would be focused on technical matters.
.
On the other hand, I'm always happy to hear more unreleased tracks in any quality I can get, but that's a totally different question.
.

I totally agree. The Purple Rain Deluxe Love & Sex track is one of those skippable tracks, much like the version of Possessed on it. Sheila's Love & Sex is a much better song and has some actual groove in it, rather than a, to me, failed attempt to bring gospel style ecstacy to a half finished song idea.

.

Still.. it was unreleased music that most of us did not know much about and there are a lot of people (especially in this thread razz ) that like it, so as far as I'm concerned I am very happy it was released.

.

oh man! different strokes, i guess. because that version of possessed rocks my peñor, hard!

it was a THE major surprise of this package for me, since i sort of dislike the bootlegged one
we've had for so long. so i was ready to just skip it. and then it turned out to be all that and
a scoop of frozen strawberry lemonade, with a scoop of tiny chocolate panties on top love music
