Regarding the images on the album cover - I know that I read an interview with the artist awhile back, and he stated that Prince requested specific images - like the Clown juggling the Earth, and he also wanted images that connect with the songs. So, there is the girl on the see-saw wearing the "paisley" outfit (for Paisely Park), the girl in black wearing the raspberry beret, the dark skinned baby holding the American Flag and the airplane flying (possibly representing the song America), Clara Bow (mentioned in Condition Of The Heart), and the ladder (representing the song of course). To me, Dr Fink just looks like an older version of himself with the grey spikey hair. Not sure who the guy dressed in black with the white face is supposed to represent, or the old man sitting with the cane. And if the image of the guy in the cloud suit is supposed to be Prince - not sure why he had himself shown as a blonde white guy....probably just to be mysterious, provacative, and to keep people guessing.

The RR auction sells Prince's handwritten instructions to artist Doug Henders for the cover artwork for his 1985 album Around the World in a Day.
It is said that the first is a daily tour memo with rooming list from Chicago, December 11, 1984, and the second is a page from the tour itinerary for December 12-19, 1984.
Prince lists 15 different images to be included in the artwork for the elaborate album jacket, but none about a blond guitar player... It came after all ?
1. Olive skinned people wearing hoods & capes of purple. Some could be white (the capes), 2. Pretty little girl aged 3 or 4 on seesaw (she should be laughing), 3. Paisley lawns with dandelions of yellow and violets. Lots of violets., 4. An old black man age 55 crying. (sitting down on a step.), 5. Blue sky background with fluffy clouds, 6. A beautiful woman, exotic looking wearing a black cape and a raspberry beret, 7. A blonde girl covered in lace eating an ice cream cone, 8. A laughing woman dressed in black who resembles Clara Bow. This woman should be hysterically laughing, 9. An obese bearded man covered with tattoos affectionately hugging a tiger, 10. A small body of water on a pier, an old woman crying with a hankerchief over a love lost, 11. A ladder leading from the water into one of the clouds in the sky, 12. Two or 3 people wearing black button downs, playing tamborines (hair shorter on one side), 13. A naked black baby running with an American flag, 14. A small Russian fighter jet flying through the sky. (shouldn't be a real focal point), 15. Doves flying and walking, 16. A juggling clown. (two juggling balls a globe).

Yes!! I knew I had seen this or read about this list of instructions. Another artist painted a more realistic picture of his vision wich included the heavier man with the Tiger and the blue water in the backround. There was a thread about the album cover several years ago, and the picture of the other cover was posted...

Interestingly, there was no specific instruction for painting the girl playing the Violin or for the blonde "Prince" guy in the cloud suit - unless that was already set in stone. And I'm wondering why the "Dr Fink with grey hair" character was added too? And who is the guy in black with black hair and a white face??

Oh, maybe the guy in black with the black hair and white face is to satisfy #12 on the list (two or three guys in black button downs w/ hair shorter on one side playing the tambourine)

Here's the alternative ATWIAD cover done by Jim Warren:

Seems as though Prince decided to go with a more "folk art" or abstract picture of vision vs. a more realist view.....

You're welcome! Brings a new perspective to it, doesn't it?

I wish Doug would just give a full discussion about the painting. lol get it over with. no more teasers.
The thing is I don't think that is supposed to represent Dr Fink 100%. When I first bought the album I always saw Prince's face, as an older man. He really doesn't look like Fink. Look at the eyes. And the complexion is not Finks either. The guy in black reminds me of Charlie Chaplin.

I need to see Constance (she is credited on the Sheila E 1986 album) Looks like Doug got that one directly from Clara Bow

thanks 4 sharing. Looks like the first artist covered a lot of these

The guy in the bottom left corner looks like John Lennon. The girl eating ice cream is blonde, but not covered in lace. The Ice cream lady on the released album is a woman vs a girl I wonder if there is a song(outtake) that has the guy with the tiger in it. There is a song Polk-a-dot Tiger though.

true story. after high school my friend and bandmate moved to LA for a couple of years to break into the metal music scene. He knew I was a fan, he didn't care for Prince, and while he was there he went to a hair salon for extensions. He asked the stylist if they had any famous clientele, the stylist said there were plenty and named a few, one of which was P. I remember him calling me months later and talking about LA and he brought up the story. I remember him asking if I'd ever heard of P coloring or bleaching his hair, I said not that I knew of, so the stylist had told him that Prince once came in and bleached his hair but that it didn't come out blonde, but more reddish-orange instead, and that P freaked out and caused a scene, yellign at aeverybody that his hair was ruined. I used to laugh at this and figured he was taking the piss but then years later I read a thread on here that brought it up. My friend couldn't have made that up because the timeline fits perfectly.

Earl Jones wasnt doing his hair? I read that Sheila story before but forgot if it was a hair studio who did the dye job. Why them when he hd his own personal stylist I wonder. "Climb in my fur."

Prince told Jill J. that he wasn't on the cover? Then who are the three males in the purple and white hooded robes and the grey haired man in the white doctor coat? They sure look like Prince to me. I also think that the red haired person eating the ice cream cone is Prince (his Camille persona). I stand by my idea that there are actually seven Prince's on this cover (seven is a big meaningful number in his music)- the five I mentioned above plus the old man with the cane (an old Prince) and the little child holding the flag (a very young Prince).

Yeah, she said when she asked who/where are you? He said 'I'm gone' and she did like a movement with her hand like he ascended up the ladder or something. . I see Prince in a lot of the faces. I see his face/head on the Fink body as an older man. I see his face in the center robed character but of course that isn't how Prince looks feature or complexion, so I began seeing Jesse Johnson, who resembles Prince. But u see male, I see 2 possibly 3 robed women. . I thought that the ice cream lady was a combo of Sheila e & Vanity. The outfit is Sheila E's but the face looks more like Vanity(who also resembles Prince). Do you mean a female alter ego? Camille was a boy(or represented a hermphrodite), according to the Lovesexy tourbook story and a Yahoo 1998 interview. . Was 7 a big number in that 1977-1987 block of Prince time? . I always thought the old man might represent Prince's father. Then thought that was too easy an answer. I don't see Prince as the little child holding the flag. . We need a more definative from the artists lol

Could have easily rented the space for Earl to do his hair

lol wow, that is one of the first things I noticed when I bought it in 1985

I could have been more like highlights but remember he did the light brown-blonde highlights in 1998 Newpower Soul period
I'm thinking it would have looked something like Steph B's or Sheila E's style here

Earl Jones definitely did Prince's hair for a time in the 80's per an account I had read. I have to find the information.

Yes, I have no doubt the woman in the bikini and skirt is supposed to be Clara Bow on the album. I am inclined to base the images on the list that Prince gave to the artist. I guess it's possible that some of the other images could be Prince, but I don't think so. It's interesting that the girl with the Violin, from the picture that Susannah posed for, is the only one that looks exactly like the original picture - and it also was not on his original list.

Yes, that is what he would do - rent out the salon. This has been discussed in Biographies. There's the story of Prince renting out a salon in DC, and it was mobbed because people found out he was there, and the picture of him coming out of a salon in London (I think) with Kim Berry, and he's holding a camera in front of his face to take pictures of the paparazzi waiting outside. * Earl Jones is thanked on at least one of his albums, so I'm sure he worked for him.
