Paisley Park, Prince’s Lonely Palace https://www.newyorker.com...ely-palace
Article kind of irked me for being so one-sided, cherry-picked, and almost lazy. I think its already been released but for some reason it popped up as recent. Thank God for the GQ article. "Enigmatic" and cryptic does not mean completely without moments of tenderness or warmth--that's all I got to say.

I read the article and does not touch on his philantropy or empathy for others. But I can forgive that, because it ultimately focuses on his transcendence and the legacy he left behind. He was a complex figure who cannot be fully captured in a single article, no matter how well written. Good night, sweet Prince | 7 June 1958 - 21 April 2016

Man, that is some sloppy reporting - and some really poor writing. We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

I hated it. It comes very one-sided... For one thing, the snippets pulled from Mayte's book were fine but to act as if moments of tenderness didn't exist within the book itself by leaving out any reference to them (after stating that accounts of tenderness were hard to find) , to use quotes from folks who haven't been in Prince's life for years (Leeds, Barbarello), to pick performances that didn't show interactions between him and his bandmates (RNR hall of fame) as indicative of his personality and ignore those that did (most of his concerts), to quote the oprah interview without spiritual or even semantic context, to act as if Prince worrying about his music leaking made him crazy (his music did leak..there have been bootlegs for 20 years)--all this seemed to serve no other purpose but to dehumanize a man she didn't have the time to figure out. I know he was a cryptic, compartmentalized, paranoid, private, at times distant man and yes, he was almost impossible to figure out, but it wasn't all beak and unfeeling and cold---even Susannah said he could be a very tender man. He had many different sides and finding a way to put the puzzle together was difficult, but she didn't even acknowledge that contradictions and even warmth ever existed. His home was a husk since he has been dead?? Well, it sounds like it was a husk when he was alive as well??This writer only shows one side of this gemini and then ignores the other side because she can't make sense of him by visiting Paisley Park (one of several places he lived) and asking a few older associates.. He was guarded and like an onion filled with layers. She peeled one layer and then gave up even when an additional layers were hinted at. Its funny but that lack of personal pictures did disturb me, but apparently there was a storage unit when thousands of pictures...maybe they were all of him for his job, but who knows, maybe there are personal ones. But slowly personal pictures keep popping up. Maybe we should wait before we assume that this man had no personal life beyond self-possession and music.

I don't get that vibe. She acknowledges his talent and "self-possession" but other than that, he comes across and cold and even cruel with no light, warmth, humor, or even spirituality.

Other problems. Apparently, someone online just remembered that Mayte's story about being docked for eating was an anomoly. His assistant said he had never done that before. Even Mayte admitted that in her book.
Couldn't this chick had interviewed MOrris Hayes instead of Tommy (I was only there for three years and refused to go on tour with him in 2011) Barbarello.
Morris posted this on the 8th of June in reference to the two articles about Prince's ligher side. Two articles that probably didn't get nearly the attention one badly written, melodramatic, simplistic, inaccurate and uppity article just got.
Hello FB fam. It’s been kind of tough with the absence of Prince, as we pass his 60th birthday. What an amazing human God lent us. Thanks to Jem Aswad for this great article. These things ease the pain a bit for me. I love to hear my fellow sisters and brothers of the Prince family to share their stories. It’s especially interesting from different eras to see what difference, if any, he was from then to when I was around. He was a prankster through and through. As always, thanks to the fans that bought the records, came out to see us and yet continue to support us. Mostly, thanks to this great artist that let us all into his world, even for this short time (To me anyway). We love and miss you brother Prince. Your star will never fade away. Peace and be wild my friends.

Well, D'angelo was probably pretty young when he met P in 2000. And Prince was paranoid. But that being said, he sometimes had a reason to be at least a bit weary of people. HIs music had been leaking out for years--thus the reason why none of these new albums of vault music are new to any of his hardcore fans. As for Leeds, it must not have felt good to be accused of stealing stuff and I imagine the quote was taken a bit of context (like Mayte's was) for this one-sided article. I don't always loves the Leeds brothers but I realize Alan's relationship with P was complicated.

Here are some of the comments...
Maxx Mercedes PRN & his Super Human petite self. Larger than life & full of wisdom. I never believed he was human until I saw him wearing tube socks, inhale chocolate chip cookies & felt his pulse. One minute quiet & the next some hilarious crazy came out that mouth of his. P (& his bell sleeves) loved & respected you tremendously Morris. I’m always going to be here to remind you of that salient fact. For those distressing moments in the future, there is always something hilarious/brilliant he said or some fonky crazy look/graze he gave to think of. i.e. Mo + Pineapples & that crazy song that made zero sense cause you don’t even swim. But it made him laugh out loud. 🤗hahaaa. I’m truly grateful for that man & I’m grateful I have one of my most bestest friends in the galaxy bc of him.
Francine Gloaguen Curtner I miss his funny side . Working with him 8 years .....enough to know him .I still have the drawings of Debby McGawn , the patterns I made and the fabrics he gave me before closing the sewing studio at Paisley .I remember when he gave me a ride from Paisley to his house for some fittings . ....what a ride !
Tina Ford One of my favorite memories is when he shaved your head during the Beautiful Experience 💜
ElizaBeth Ann James Oh Morris, you two were peas in a pod in that respect. Your beautiful spirit was was a balm for him and I feel very blessed to have hugged you Brotha and feel that warmth that emanated from you. His favorite prank with me was to touch one shoulder and then move so fast that he'd be on the other side by the time I looked. I fell for it every time. Thanks for all the memories, P. Hope to see you soon, Morris!!
Julie Ann Christina I woke this morning and had a memory from the days of NPGMusicClub sound check days. It was the show here in Phoenix at the Dodge Theatre (the name then) Not a huge venue... Smaller a bit more intimate setting. There had to be less than 100 of us sitting there before the rest were let in. He talked, he asked us questions... He picked on a few from the crowd. I loved it all. However... There was one thing I so wanted to say... He was wearing his flipflops with no socks at the time... I was just amazed how relaxed he seemed and to show his toes. As he wrapped up the soundcheck session, I cannot recall anyone else on the stage... I had tunnel vision when it was Prince. As he walked off the stage... It was completely quiet, the in awe kind of quiet. While he walked across the stage I said as loud as I could (could not help it)... I like your toes! He turned and smirked his smile...and walked off. Out of all things... Those were my words to Prince. 🙏🤗 I had a couple other things that took place at shows or aftershows...but I love that those were my chosen words to say to Prince when I had a chance. 🙏 💜 I said it loud and with humorous pride... I am a such a nerd like that. 💕💜 Ps- Miss everything about him...and thank u for your humbleness, realness and truth.

That is why I said their relationship was complicated. But he has said nice things about Prince as well as petty swipes like that stupid post he made about P's 2014 SNL performance (making fun of a rock star's clothes and questioning the amount of time the female performers got during a PRINCE performance on SNL???? Dude, really?)

It does make you realize why P might have been particularly paranoid about this guy...LOL.

Speaking as a former journalist--I sucked and hated it, btw-- this article sounds like it was deliberately bent by a heavy-handed editor. The assignment editor either told the writer to include dramatic contrast (that came off awkward and clunky), or screwed with the article after submission to make it more controversial. IMO the latter is more likely. One of the reasons I left journalism, aside from the crappy pay, was editors doing that to my stories. It was embarrassing. And the MUSIC continues...forever...

Interesting article.
And also Alan Leeds I like his honesty and he wasn't a sugar coater. At least he didn't come out acting like 'Prince was my best friend' but trashed him when he was alive, unlike some associates, exes, and even Prince fans who shall be nameless.
Prince was a complicated and complexed person with all sides and different perspectives and I don't want to hear everyone acting all phony I want to hear truthful but humanized version of Prince, just as a fan, don't sell me the phony crap 'Oh I love him' now he is gone.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
I am not really dissing on Alan for this article. I don't agree with everything he says but his story with Prince is his own and I can't fault his honesty...as long as he is completely honest about himself, his intentions, the good and bad of life with P. etc etc. This article, by the way, did nothing even close to humanizing or showing different sides. All it did was dehumanize, demonize and turn him into a tragic caricature like Richard III or Macbeth..

Like it or not it still the journalist's perspective. Her story is not going to affect his legacy, I don't think. I don't get why fans are so desperate for Prince to be some flawless creature now he is dead. Opinion are assholes.

The New Yorker is supposed to be better than this. They (or the New York Times, I forget which) bent some shit about my favorite actor Daniel Day-lewis that reminds me a bit of this. There was an actor on the set of the film there will be blood (who was originally supposed to play the Eli character) who was fired for just not being good enough and bringing a distracting entourage onto the set.. The New Yorker or NYT writer stated that the actor quit due to being terrified of DDL's method acting intensity and his behavior in-between takes. It was written off as literally life threatening. This was denied by DDL, the director, other actors on set, and finally last year the actual actor who was fired admitted that he been too immature, unfocused and inexperienced to hold his own in scenes with DDL, but that DDL was nothing but professional... Journalists are supposed to be better than that. I think the internet has forced journalists to rush shit out tooo quickly and has given them inaccurate information too quickly, too indirectly, andhas made it too easily available... I suspect this writer of the prince article didn't even read Mayte's book but merely read about the book. It is like too much is heard through the grapevine and people don't read original sources.

Who the fvck said he should be perfect? Don't put words in my mouth. By the way, I see very little journalism and far too much Perspective...He wasn't simple so no one should depict him that way. But complicated or complex people are complicated and complex because they have bad and GOOD sides. A misanthrope with no tenderness or lightness is not complex. The exclusion of anything light funny tender about the man when any fan could find more than a few stories to support that...is cherry picking to present a bleak picture. BTW, people likeMorrisHayes say good and bad things about P..they are well-rounded in their depiction. Why are fans never allowed to defend this man without being called naive or thinking that Prince is some "Flawless creature".

Yawn argue just to argue.
Look, not everyone is going to give a nicely perspective about Prince and I admired the journalist's honesty and she wasn't the only one who complained the coldness and lack of personal side of Prince as Paisley Park handlers just marketed him like some supernatural cartoon but that was how Prince presented himself too when he was alive. I heard stories from some other fans said they felt the tour was left to be desired. Yes I want to hear the good and bad and the honest side about Prince, and whether you like it or not as years go by people are going to slowly express their truths not their facade about Prince. And also the next generation is going to invest more information about Prince beyond him just a music and there are going to be some unflattered things come out about Prince so deal. Prince had the control to get the fan focus on the music when he was alive but it is going to get harder as years go by and there is little the estate or anyone else can do but well maybe condemn or respect the diverse perspectives.
Plus the journalist just speaking from her observation on the trip that is all, not writing a Prince biography, and when did that required complexity? Maybe Morris Hayes can give the good and bad more in-depth because he worked for Prince for nearly 20 years and the journalist only had one connection to Prince which was some Paisley Park trip, not a fair comparison, right? And if you read the article the journalist made some good points (I haven't went there yet) that Paisley Park handlers should show more human side of Prince like maybe footages and videos of his humor and behind the scenes interaction with people, but then again Prince always felt like he was the loneliest guy on the planet that explained why the journalist didn't see videos and pictures of him as a husband and father or jokester or whatever personal side she was expecting.
And I said FANS not purplerabbithole when I mentioned about people tried their hardest to sanctified Prince now he is dead and wanted to censor and control narratives of people who offer objectives and perspectives that are not so fanatical, so READ MY PREVIOUS POST CAREFULLY. No wonder some of the associates don't want to come on here to post. [Edited 6/18/18 22:13pm]

Well, here is some more arguing for the sake of arguing......It might interest you to know that I dislike Paisley in many ways as well. But i also don't think it is completely without merit. I also know that he traveled and lived elsewhere as well. That still doesn't justify that article's limited perspective. It might be nice if she admitted that she didn't research it too much...since obviously she didn't. lLet's look at the mis-leading subtitle...The place is a husk without Prince??? The rest of the article contradicts that statement by basically implying that the place was husk with him in it aswell. In her tweet, she said it was about "mourning"...mourning whom?-- a empty shell that happened to play music completely unrelated to itself.

One the one hand the author correctly writes that Paisley Park opened in 1987, and then she writes that Prince and MJ played ping pong at Paisley Park in 1986? I´ve read about that ping pong game before but where did that actually take place? I read that Sherilynn Fenn was there, too but I don´t remember the place. Or did they meet at Paisley before it actually openened? It was probably in L.A, not MN. " I´d rather be a stank ass hoe because I´m not stupid. Oh my goodness! I got more drugs! I´m always funny dude...I´m hilarious! Are we gonna smoke?"

Okay while you mentioned you have issues with the museum, the journalist also expressing her similar dissatisfaction, it is kind of odd, you are having an issue with it which doesn't make any sense. Sounds hypocritical. As a reminder, the article focused more on her time at Paisley Park and wishing she saw more media of Prince as a human (like playing basketball or goofing off with people he closed with) that was her main criticism not attacking Prince personally or are we reading it differently? That is why the title is 'Paisley Park, Prince's Lonely Palace.' If you want her to mention about his good deeds, then address that to the museum management to possibly have a room dedicated to all the charities he donated and another room filled with personal moments. From what I heard from the visitors, they were allowed to see his rooms of his albums and his achievements or whatever that was music focused. Once again her main purpose was to write an article about her visit and what she saw. I think you are expecting too much out of this. So I don't know why you are overreacting an article that is going to be archived in a few weeks or so and also out of the org's first page results in another few days or so? Yet Prince's legacy has the potential to last long as Mozart or more so, regardless of the critics and the such. It is not that serious.
