And do not pay too much for a CD for any of the following: "The Chocolate Invasion", "The Slaughterhouse", "C-Note", or "Xpectation." Those are all fakes. They were not put on CD--other than maybe a few personal copies but those would not be for sale. People sell fakes (they may sound and look fine) for very HIGH (haha) prices as "rare" for many of his out of print albums or in this case ones that were never on CD.

So be careful... But as far as I know there are NO vinyl copies at all (including personal ones) of any of those albums.

Go back to the beginning. For You. Then move forward.

yep...

I think that's bad idea. For You is not one of his stronger albums.

Purple Rain and SOTT are obvious ones. Parade and The Gold Experience would be personal choices to go for.

A very good place to start.

When you read you begin with A B C.

When you to Prince you begin with F O R Y O U."

It really depends on your taste, but since you already have Dirty Mind, Controversy and Love Sexy, I’d work my way through the 80s chronologically - so 1999, Purple Rain (get the deluxe extended PDF’s version), ATWIND, Parade, Sign O’ The Times and The Black Album.
Also, if you want the full experience, get yourself some outtakes from those eras.

The first one that came to mind to suggest is COME. However, I do like the idea of starting at For You and coming up chronologically.

Around The World In A Day (!)

1999

Parade

Sign O The Times

Small Club / Paard van Troje 1988 (bootleg)

Purple Rain (of course...)

Those are the essentials to be honest. Without those, you won't get why Prince was such a phenomenon in the 1980s - and why many fans stuck with him to the end even when he was putting out mediocre music.

1999 - sott if u wanna hear why people fell in love with prince ... everything else is best served later so as not to deter u from understanding what he is capable of ... everything else has some diamonds in the rough but also so many embatassingly bad songs u may lose interest in the search

Uh, Purple Rain. How can you not have Purple Rain? Log out of the org and get Purple Rain already. Stop reading this and start listening to Purple Rain.

RODSERLING

You seriously advised a new fan to buy For You, Côme and Gold??
.
For You is à terrible pièce of crap, while Côme and Gold are not available physically since the 90's...
.
Anyway, for the newcomer, the expanded édition of Purple Rain is a must-buy.

How old are you? Sign O The Times first. His best album. For You may be too old school and naive for you. lol get it.

Purple Rain, 1999. Parade is very overrated but has good music. Graffiti Bridge is the shit.

ONE QUESTION:

The concerts, my friend.

- Purple Rain Tour - Syracuse 1985
- Hit'n'Run Tour - Cobo Hall, Detroit 1986
- Sign O' The Times - the motion picture 1987
- Lovesexy '88 - Dortmund 1988

But of course you have no excuse not to fill the gap
between Controversy and Lovesexy,
given the masterpieces those albums are.

I think you run the risk to be disappointed if you jump eras constantly.
You have to immerse yourself in the eras : Purple Rain is not the album only,
but also the B-Sides and extended versions, and the side projects : Ice Cream Castles,
Apollonia 6, and Sheila E's first album. But you also need the movie, the videos (officials and appearances,
such as AMA 1985), and the Syracuse concert. Then the bootlegs: 1st Avenue (PR original takes), the tour soundchecks (Miami 1985) and even give-away songs! Sheena Easton's "Sugar Walls", Andre Cymone's "Dance Electric"...

It also helps to begin from the very start, because Prince's progression from album to album
is much more impressive this way. Make sure you cover each year in full (official releases,
maxi-singles, side projects, given songs). Not everything may blow your mind, but you will find true masterpieces,
sometimes where you wouldn't expect it.

Don't burn everything at once. 1986 alone should last you 6 months.
I don't know how much the digital frantic pace of life has perverted you,
but Prince deserves immersion: give him the time his work deserves.
Your eardrums and brains will thank you for it.

Oh, and until the Estate, WB or whatever entity get their shit together,
be aware that the mind-blowing decade (the eighties) CD albums
all have a disastrous sound. No dynamics, faded colors, when compared
to their original analog counterpart.

Look for FLAC'd or hi-quality mp3 rips of vinyls or cassette tapes,
or the 2009 Rhino remasters.
Harder to get, but they're out there.
Become a gold digger.
