First airplay of Prince's 'Mary Don't You Weep' in Europe
I was making coffee this morning, tuned into Mary Anne Hobbs on BBC 6 Music and THIS is what I heard at that precise moment. The first play in Europe apparently... I still haven't recovered 💜
The video below was officially posted so presumably it's ok to post here too.
And this is the link to this morning's BBC Radio 6 show during which Mary Ann Hobbs was joined for a chat by Susan Rogers - available for listen for another 29 days:
Ohh purple joy oh purple bliss oh purple rapture!
REAL MUSIC by REAL MUSICIANS - Prince

.
What utter nonsense is this. Do you think any radio station decided not to play this when it was out because this show was going to have its "first play"?

I couldn't possibly answer this question because I do not know what 'any' radio station decides to do. All I know is that BBC Radio 6 Music obtained the exclusive right to do so. Now off you go and enjoy a cup of coffee yourself, it sounds like you need one... or two.
Is this the same take as the version that's been circulating for a while? If so this sounds like quite a big upgrade on the bootleg versions to my ears. If that's true then I'm glad we're getting this release even if I would ideally have preferred something totally new.
Heavenly wine and roses seems to whisper to me when you smile...
Always cry for love, never cry for pain...

It sounded incredible on my digital radio. And I love it that the sniffles have been kept, makes me wonder if Prince shed a tear whilst singing, the emotion in the song is so palpable...

I think he's just got a snotty nose to be honest. He singing after the sniffles sounds like he needs to blow his nose.
I'd say this whole recording is just a warm up/vocal exercise. It's not meant to be a performance of an actual composistion, so I find it funny how the estate is pushing it like a single lol. It's not catchy, it doesn't go anywhere, it's just Prince flexing his vocals and trying some ideas out.

It certainly isn't your average pop record, but that still doesn't lessen the essence and beauty of it... I am sure it will stop most people in their tracks when hearing it, at least pique their interest. Aretha Franklin also did a cover of this, with slightly different lyrics, but so relevant today. It's a great spiritual classic that derserves more attention and I am not only glad Prince highlighted this title several times throughout his career but also that it was appropriately* chosen as the leading track for the next release (*some of us are still mourning after all).

Well put. Why chase a hit radio hit? It is interesting to explore different sides of Prince. Especially at this important time in his career- about to conquer the World.
First of all, it's barely a song. There are no lyrics to speak of aside from a line or two that just repeat throughout. Second, the sound quality is decent, but there are some muffled parts that appear and make it sound like it was sourced from an old cassette tape (which it likely was). There is no emption palpable because he's not saying a damned thing in the lyrics. If there's something emotional going on with him while perfomring that it's not related to this song. He's dicking around on his piano and trying out lyric ideas. I hope the Eurpoeans like it because it will do zero business here. I love the idea of this abum, but it should be a binus disc on something actually worth releasing.

A snippet of the track was also played on June 7th during the main news on BBC Radio 2 (this is the most popular radiostation in the UK for those who don't know).

I wouldn't be surprised if the estate going to release some of his unreleased tracks in Europe and possibly Australia more than here in the States. Prince was very more appreciated in those countries and he toured in Europe frequently.

Prince was always revered here in Europe and he showed a lot of love back to his fans during the 21 Nights in London... But then again, I think that happened pretty much wherever he performed. There certainly was a good response from radiolisteners after 'Mary Don't You Weep' plus some of the main presenters at Radio 6 and Radio 2 are Prince fans... which helps!

Yeah that is a dope song. I love it. I always wonder did he did a gospel album secretly and it is in the vault? He might had been ashamed to release it in the 80s because he was provocative at that time. I am not religious but I would love to hear it. Some of his songs had that similar church organ sound.
I agree that Prince was love everywhere but I always thought Europe appreciation him as a musician but the mass here in the States always connected him with only Purple Rain and 1999. That was why he constantly toured there.
