OK. I know you guys came up with a 'solid' reasoning for your belief that the opening line is "2 7s together", but I just filtered the song and somewhat isolated the lead vocal and he is definitely singing "2 servants together". You can believe whatever but I get tired of people making up lyrics and misleading the rest of us.

Okay, thanks. Your objection is duly noted above. smile

I can only speak for myself, but I’m not trying to mislead anyone, just giving my opinion and displaying my best attempt at deciphering these lyrics from a very low quality source.

Getting it right is what is in important, not being the one who is right.

Anyone else have an opinion as to whether it’s “2 servants”, “2 sevens”, or even “2 sermons” wink , or have any other corrections at all to the above lyrics? I know that can't be the only mistake I’ve potentially made. smile Come on and add to the collective wisdom.

I’m going to re-edit my post and make it even clearer that these lyrics are not official, although my asking for corrections and not using Prince spellings should have made that fairly clear. smile

I'm sorry if I came on too strong about it, Brendan. It just happens over and over again. You're a very cool guy to not respond with a nasty retort. We can all learn from such maturity.

I’ve got nothing but respect for you and your ears, Jestyr. smile

Right now I’m leaning about 90 to 10 in favor of “two servants together” being the correct lyric. But ultimately it matters little, because the meaning is much the same either way.

Agreed.

That’s because seven is also considered a special/perfect/holy number in the bible, so both words lead you down the same path; that being, that Prince is referring to bonding with a kindred spiritual partner and a fellow servant of god.

Where do you get the impression that '7' is a special number in the bible? There are a lot of numbers in the bible...

But Prince is much more sober and uneasy in his new found luck/joy after the breakup of his marriage (“Like time, indefinite.”) and so he remains both frantic and determined to keep this fragile love from meeting with the same fate (“Try to catch the glass / before it falls.”)

Isn't it funny - I see it exactly the opposite. Prince has always been over-optimistic about every one of his endeavors - including marriages. My interpretation of the second line is that he sees the relationship as an everlasting union without end:

Main Entry: in·def·i·nite
Pronunciation: (")in-'def-n&t, -'de-f&-
Function: adjective
Etymology: Latin indefinitus, from in- + definitus definite
Date: 1530

: having no exact limits

- indefinite noun
- in·def·i·nite·ly adverb
- in·def·i·nite·ness noun

And then "try to catch the glass before it falls" is just a way of saying let's keep it fixed before it breaks. So all in all I guess we're both agreeing on that one then!

Hopefully Prince never releases these lyrics officially with the new album and we can debate this for years to come like "funk" and "fuck" in "Erotic City". wink

LOL. Totally!

Jestyr:
Where do you get the impression that '7' is a special number in the bible? There are a lot of numbers in the bible...

Excerpt from an article written by Grant R. Jeffrey (from his book "The Signature of God").

“Ivan Panin carefully examined the Hebrew text of Genesis 1:1 and discovered an incredible phenomenon of multiples of 7 that could not be explained by chance. Genesis 1:1 was composed of seven Hebrew words containing a total of 28 letters. Throughout the Bible the number seven appears repeatedly as a symbol of divine perfection - the 7 days of creation, God rested on the 7th day, the 7 churches, the 7 seals, the 7 trumpets, etc. In total, Panin discovered 30 separate codes involving the number 7 in this first verse of the Bible.

The number "seven" permeates the totality of Scripture because the number speaks of God's divine perfection and perfect order. The actual number 7 appears 287 times in the Old Testament (7 x 41 = 287 ) while the word "seventh" occurs 98 times (7 x 14 = 98 ). The word "seven-fold" appears seven times. In addition, the word "seventy" is used 56 times (7 x 8 = 56 ).”

Whether I agree with this or think it’s mere coincidence or a case of mathematical chance, is neither here nor there. Prince’s use of this number over the years – including writing a song by that name – almost assuredly is influenced by his study of the bible.

Jestyr:
Isn't it funny - I see it exactly the opposite. Prince has always been over-optimistic about every one of his endeavors - including marriages. My interpretation of the second line is that he sees the relationship as an everlasting union without end:

Absolutely. I couldn’t agree more. This is the man that talks in terms of forever, soul mates, of knowing his lover in this life and the next, and who once sang, “I am yours now and you are mine / And together we’ll love through / All space and time, so don’t cry / One day all 7 will die”.

That’s why I was so surprised to see him being so much more realistic with his passion by throwing in a word like “indefinite”. That word in its most common use simply means “not definite”. It’s a neutral word, that’s neither pessimistic or optimistic in nature. And I would surmise that the use of the word “indefinite” here is soberly realistic in the context of Prince describing love in the recent wake of the death of both his mother and his marriage.

Mind you, “indefinite” is not as romantic as “Forever in My Life”, but it might be a whole lot wiser. wink Not that romance and dreams aren’t important as well, but it’s much healthier to keep these two worlds in balance.

But I see where you are coming from with looking at "indefinite" as "having no exact limits". But still, "no exact limits" doesn't imply eternity or that there are "no limits", but rather that the person using the word is not capable of speaking to the issue of limits. For example, if someone takes an indefinite leave, it could be forever and it could be for a day.

And when you couple this line ("like time, indefinite) with the next (“Try to catch the glass / before it falls”) it surely seems as though Prince understands that there’s no guarantee of permanence to the fragility of love, regardless of how much you are totally overjoyed and enraptured in it all.

Getting back to the possibility that he’s singing “seven” also can be supported by the old adage about there being a “seven year itch” when it comes to relationships, which also nicely fits with the next line about breaking the glass (mirror) that brings you seven years of bad luck.

Whether it’s “seven” or “servants” certainly makes no difference to the meaning of the song, but I’ll give him extra points for cleverness if he actually wrote “seven”.

And in closing, my time here is so indefinite that I might not even live to hit the enter key on this post and no one will ever see this.....

Unlucky you, I did live to hit enter! wink guitar
