Diamonds and Pearls tour

I've only seen pictures of this tour but never heard any audio or footage from the tour.

Was the tour good?

Was the tour hated and unliked as the nude tour?

I'm seriously curious as I see it not mentioned a lot.

There's some decent recordings out there as well as pro shot video if you get a chance to grab em!!

The tour was a success here in Australia and the shows were unbelievable.

It was a massive success in Europe as was the album. The tour was one of Prince's largest stage productions.

I think a pro-shot video release of that tour should be on the Estate's priority list. Not necessarily my favorite tour but it was huge and I remember being shocked at the time that there wouldn't be a home video release of it, particularly since the tour didn't hit the US.

In the end I guess WB and Prince decided one D&P video album was enough, and at that particular moment in pop history, music videos were the hype and sold better than live footages, so they opted for the music videos collection.

Still, it's odd that they wouldn't at least sell a video to TV channels like they'd done with the Parade and Nude tours.

JUNE 1992, I remember it well!

This tour was amazing!

Luckily I managed to get to see two shows during one particularly hot week.

I also had tickets for the 31st August 1991 show but that sadly got cancelled.

I loved that so many D&P album tracks were performed so it really did feel like a D&P tour.

However at the time it also felt like a Symbol tour because there was so much promotion for it. Tracks like Sexy MF and Damn U were performed live and Symbol album tracks were played over the PA before the show as a teaser.

Also Carmen Electyra was being very heavily promoted with Go Go Dancer being played on the video screens.

Such an amazing Summer - June 1992 to be forever remembered!!

In many ways I feel '91 to 95' can very easily rival '81 to 85' as perhaps being one of Prince's greatest periods, as so much was happening and Prince was massively accessible.

In 2001 at the Celebration a guide was asked about concert releases and she said that from the Controversy tour to Act II tour there was at least 1 Pro-shot show from those tours ready for release and that some were already released for TV broadcast.

My guess is then:

The Second Coming concert footage
A 1999 Tour concert
Purple Rain Syracuse
Parade Detroit Birthday show
Sign O The Times
Lovesexy Live
Nude Tour Japan
Diamonds And Pearls London
Act II Germany (?)

iirc they actually did. i don't remember to what channel. could have been mtv. but in typical
prince fashion, he then decided he didn't want them to broadcast it anyway so he bought back
the rights and it was never shown on tv.

No, that was Rock In Rio 91. And it was shown on a few Latin America channels.

I don't remember the Nude Tour being hated. Sure, it was less impressive than his fabulous 1980s tours, but there really was nowhere to go but down after that anyway. Same with the Diamonds & Pearls album: it was good, but not as great as his music used to be. But the tour proved that despite the Prince hype not being as big as it was in the late 80s, his fanbase in Europe was still huge. After having toured here in 1986, 87, 88, 90, in 1992 he was still able to sell out arenas multiple times. He played the Ahoy in Rotterdam 5 times and the MECC in Maastricht once. Six concerts in Holland, that's not bad and reviews from both fans and critics were positive. Apart from the D&P songs and a few old hits, he did a fantastic version of Thieves In the Temple which went into It, the only tour where this was played. It also didn't hurt that Sexy MF was debuted on the tour and the single was released while the tour was going on. And as the tour progressed, he kept adding songs to the set list: Delirious, Bambi and Call the Law, which was played as an extra encore on the final Rotterdam show on July 8, 1992 when most people were already leaving the venue. Naughty old Prince thanking the Dutch audience for a fantastic run of shows.

I had tickets for the Blenheim Palace show on 31/8/91 too, was really disappointed when it got cancelled.

Happy times indeed! I went to a number of the Earls Court shows and also had tickets for Maine Rd and Blenheim Palace. Maine Rd was a nightmare for me as I got seriously lost, missing the concert. I was so upset I picked up some hitchhikers on the way home hoping they might put me out of my misery (they were very friendly but I must have seemed mental, a lone teenage girl crying her eyes out because she couldn't find a humungous football stadium to see her favourite popstar. They did offer to take me out of their way to find it, but I'd missed most of it by then anyway).
Blenheim Palace cancellation will always be a disappointment for me, it would have been such a beautiful setting, and different to a stadium.

No, the reason was that his American fanbase had lost interest, even despite Batman and Diamonds & Pearls being best selling albums. In Europe, he sold out 10-20,000 seat arenas. When he toured the US in 1993, he played in 2-3000 seat theaters.

Yeah, Blenheim would have been awesome I think. At least I had more notice about that one!

I was at the show in the RDS, Dublin in 92, it was amazing. Prince was such a big deal at that time, D&P had been riding high on the charts, all over MTV and so on, he was attracting such massive, young crowds in those days.

Before the show we could hear some soundcheck stuff on stage, maybe Love Thy Will Be Done or something like that. It was a hot, perfect summer day, a rarity in Ireland.

The show itself was one of those too-big open-air things where you end up spending a lot of time looking at the screens, but when Prince rose up out of the stage the place went nuts. I still remember how much energy Prince had throughout, the band was so well rehearsed with all the dance moves etc, and Mayte brought a lot of extra life to the stage. Hearing Rosie's voice belting out of the massive PA system on that sunny day was just incredible.

I remember being not so crazy about the modern NPG arrangements of the older hits, but all the D&P material sounded just perfect - Insatiable and Live 4 Love being my highlights. And yeah we got our first glimpse of the new prince on the screens before the show.

Carmen was left out of the Dublin show for some reason, despite being named on the tickets and posters etc.

PS Laurence maybe you have the wrong idea there, the Nude tour two years earlier was a MASSIVE deal, hugely successful and popular. The show in Cork was amazing, the whole country was Prince crazy at that time because of the high profile of the Batman album, movie, tshirts and singles (it was EVERYWHERE) and also Ireland were doing well in the Italia 90 world cup so there was a great energy in the air. The Nude was totally great.

Considering the OP's history, I would encourage you to not take the words too seriously. The rest of us know that The Nude Tour was widely popular. There were a few broadcasts and videos released throughout the year.

I think it was the Nude Tour where Prince went to a new level of athletics since the Game Boyz were onboard and probably choreographing many of the numbers. I remember the boots of rehearsals and they were so great. There is one where he says, "We're doing the show right? Did I say we'd do the show once today?" Fink starts to respond and Prince says, "Psyche! Here we go...". Rosie laughs and they get into the first medley of songs. I think it's the Nudity boot. It might also be the same one where he stops the song and asks about the kick drum on the drum machine. (Remember, they used the drum pattern from "The Future" for that whole medley.) No one would ever notice probably but it skipped a small kick drum beat. Prince caught it so quickly. He tells Michael he'll have to lightly tap his own kick drum to compensate in case something happens.

When Paisley Park were showing concert screenings last year, they showed the Diamonds and Pearls concert from 6/15/92 in London. The quality was excellent. I know there has been a bootleg video of this show for many years, but it cuts off after Insatiable. At Paisley Park it was the whole show. You would think that these shows that are release-ready would be a simple thing to get out.

Just to add, I know there are at least 2 other concerts that were professionally filmed from D&P. One being the Glam Slam show and the other one being the Superbowl after party/show at Paisley Park, both from January 1992. Footage from the PP show can be seen in the Nothing Compares 2 U video.
