Prince reportedly became addicted to Percocet after hip surgery in 2010. “Jumping off those pianos and speakers, that doesn’t bode well for anybody,” says keyboardist Morris Hayes, Prince’s musical director from 1992 to 2012. “But it’s not something he would talk about. If his head was on fire, he’d put a hat on it and keep moving.” Prince’s friend Sheila E. added, “He was in pain all the time, but he was a performer. . . . You think about all the years he was jumping off those risers.” After Prince was found dead in an elevator at his Paisley Park home in Minnesota in 2016, tests revealed an inordinately high amount of fentanyl in his liver and stomach. He had no prescription in his name for the drug, but thought he was taking Vicodin. While searching his home, investigators discovered a bottle with 49 black-market pills that tested as part fentanyl.

Experts say Prince probably didn’t know what he was taking. “I guarantee you that Prince wasn’t saying, ‘I’m taking fentanyl,’ ” says Scott Bienenfeld, an addiction psychiatrist who works with musicians. “The majority of my patients are pain patients, and someone gave them fentanyl as an add-on: ‘You’ve taken OxyContin, now take this.’ Most of these musicians, trust me, don’t know it’s laced with fentanyl.” These kinds of pills are cranked out in labs in China and Mexico and can be easily ordered online and shipped to the U.S. Pills with fentanyl compounds – sold on the street with names like Apache, Goodfella, Jackpot and Murder 8 – can be as cheap as $10. “The drugs look exactly like legit pills or drugs that aren’t cut with anything,” says Adria Petty. “Victims have no idea they are ingesting fentanyl at all, or extremely high doses of synthetic fentanyl, 50 to 100 times stronger than legally prescribed fentanyl, which is almost guaranteed to be deadly.”

I believe this was posted already. But it is important for conspiracy theorists to realize that pain pill addiction is a common and complex problem in the industry due to the physical pain that result from touring and constant playing, the accessibility/secrecy of illegal pain pills, the non-descript unregulated nature of the pills and the non-exact science on how to treat pain when people (perhaps necessarily) are working past their physical prime. In some ways, the music industry is (partly) to blame for stuff like. Yes, personal responsibility plays into it, but all these other issues do complicate good decision where personal health is concerned.

I don't know her - but she's doing her "Prince was murdered" schtick in the comment section of Rolling Stone now.

I feel so bad for those whom stuggle with chronic pain, and end up getting addicted to pain killers. I mean really, they ultimatly become addicted because they just want to rid themselves of pain. I've never struggled with chronic pain, but I can only imagine how dibilitating it is.

It’s a terrible epidemic. I don’t know what I’d do if I was ever in serious pain...I can’t even handle OTC cold medication or anything that has caffeine. No way would my body handle an opioid. I was watching one of Anthony Bourdain’s shows the other night and he was in a town in northern Massachusetts ravaged by this epidemic. He knew what these people were going through as he had a heroin problem earlier in his life. Most of the people in this town had issues with chronic pain and got hooked on painkillers. So sad. I still remember Damaris Lewis’s interview on CNN with Don Lemon the day of Prince’s passing. She said the last time she spoke with him she told him he needed to rest. That day I remember saying to someone he worked himself to death and I still believe it. I wish someone could have locked him up somewhere where he could have rested and slept for a long time.

Theres a boot of the Atlanta Purple rain show where during BIAS, he jumps from the floor onto top of the piano, sans hands etc. just using his legs. Such a feat. Watching that many many years ago had me thinking even back then that "OMG, he's gonna feel that in about ten years."

I feel bad for all those aging rockers that continues to tour into their 70s or they might lose their homes, and some of them are having health problems and using painkillers per article, to keep it going. I am glad that Elton John decided to retire while he still somewhat fair health. But touring is where the bucks at these days for the majority of musicians.

Rolling Stone did an article about some of the rockers decided to retire after the deaths of Tom Petty and Prince because it spook them and their deaths finally made them confront their mortality.

Prince didn't need to tour even though he had to tour for payroll. I also believed he said that to help others and he was good at helping others. He had investments, publishing, gold bars, money in the bank, and was giving away quite a bit of money before he passed, I wish he would had chill and took care of his health more.

But like Sheila E in an interview said performers willing to cope with pain just to do something that they loved even, unfortunately, meant take some higher dosage of pain meds.
