I do think that If It'll Make U Happy could make some noise out there...it's sort of timeless, from what we've heard...a lilting, reggae-infused slice of pop heaven... And it's so unmistakingly PRINCE.

It's over. Accept it and move on. We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

If somebody found a vault burried under Graceland containing the most amazing Elvis song ever recorded, it would not be on mainstream radio.
The only old schooler I can think of that would have any chance would be Michael Jackson. They, in fact, dusted off some old outtakes a few years back and did additional production on them and they made it to radio briefly. I can't remember how many years ago that was (3 or 4?). I think they've scraped the bottom of the Michael Jackson barrel already, but if something amazing showed up, the mainstream radio just MIGHT care enough to get it some airplay. I can't think of anyone else that could do the same. (and for the record, I believe Prince was way more talented than MJ, but MJ had way more mainstream appeal).

There's no such thing as making noise on radio or the charts anymore but something like Do Yourself A Favor or the full version of Cosmic Day could get some attention and create new fans.

If this was released now and backed up with BBC Radio 2 + 6 airplay, no doubt it would become an instant Summer hit here in the UK.

I didn’t think it would. Personally I think the only ways a track could become a hit now is if it was in a movie soundtrack (and the movie was wildly successful and the song featured in a key scene!), in an advert or released as a duet with some current act. Which doesn’t mean of course that I want those things to happen (definitely not the last one!). If the estate managed to come up with a long term plan albums could sell quite steadily. But I can’t see any hit songs any time soon...

Totally agree with that... whats more I see it very likely to happen...

Awesome beat, not too self-referential, not completely unlike a lot of current pop, great story about how he gave it to a band with physical challenges. And yeah, I know the lyrics are probably co-written, but hell, "sell" that, too. And the MUSIC continues...forever...

He was trending #1 on Utube for NC2U for a few days in April...that's substantial. I agree with a soundtrack/theme song for a movie... that could be huge! One of my all time favorites...Empty Room...I think could still be current... heartbreak songs never go out of style.

Don't have to do that. Just have DJ Khaled say "We da best music!" at the beginning & end of the song. Instant radio hit and the video on Youtube will get 100 million views in about 3 weeks. You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. An even more sure way to get radio qirplay is to use Cardi B. There's a local radio station where literally every 3rd or 4th song is by Cardi or her featured on someone else's song and she's had several Top 10 hits on the Hot 100 since a year ago. "Virgin Queen" just for the sheer "fuck it all, let's restart now since he's fucking dead" thing and let n00bs feel what we felt back in the day, and start from there... O(+>NIИ<+)O

"Virgin Queen"? Is it from the 'Dirty Mind" sessions? "Don't need no Reefer. Don't need Cocaine. Purple Music does the same to my brain."

I'd say "Go". The music is great and the vibe of the song is really nice. Probably a song I'd see receiving positive reactions from the general public. [Edited 6/15/18 19:10pm] [Edited 6/15/18 19:11pm] "Don't need no Reefer. Don't need Cocaine. Purple Music does the same to my brain."

I dont think it is about getting a hit single or chart result on Prince's future releases - that's like highly unlikely. What is possible is building a brand and trust with his core audience and releasing quantity of his un-released catalogue. Prince was consistently brilliant so anything (concerts, rehearsals, outtakes) are all releaseable and we all know we are likely to buy most. I thought the recent Nothing Compares To You is a good example of how well his catalogue can come up given attention(mix) and release.

I think a posthumous duet with Bruno Mars would help. Bruno Mars always idolized Prince and Prince expressed his fanship of Bruno too. Or Kendrick Lamar as Prince like him as well. It should be material from post-2010 or something but then again Prince always makes timeless music so digged some unreleased tracks would help from the 80s or even 90s. The possibilities are limitless.
But overall licensing should be more focus less on chart-topping.
