. No need to make it personal. And anyway, I did buy it, but then gifted it. .

Your obscure bands surely didn t have some millions dollars contract behind those releases. The physical market is dying, it was now or never. .

.

A company does not leave money on the table. It's all about ROI. The mass market needs to be handled differently from a niche market.

.

I don't understand why you think that WB/estate/Tidal will take their ball and go home if they do not sell big numbers. They are not petulant children, but there to make money. So, sure, it might not be lavish deluxe editions that they release, but releases like the P&M'83. Or something filled with tracks from a particular period.

.

I am not advocating not buying anything to force niche market marketing, just analyzing. And I might prefer niche market marketing to mass market marketing. Just look at how Michael Jackson sold his product, versus how Prince sold his music. MJ did mass marketing, milking every release for years to get the highest sales numbers possible. Prince did a new album every year, plus side projects. Especially the side projects were niche market materials.

.

What logic do you have for saying nothing is going to be released anymore, physical or otherwise? You seem to think that WB/estate does not want to squeeze the market, whatever it is, for whatever money they can get. Where is your reasoning? You seem to be saying that there will be nothing released if there is not a big market. I think that reasoning is delusional. Unless the only worthwhile releases to you are releases containing the original records plus extra stuff. Released (bi-)yearly.

.

Frankly, the P&M'83 release, which has never been available in listenable quality, is more interesting to me than that.

I buy CDs because it's the only other way to listen to music in my car besides AM/FM radio. It's also nice to have a physical backup just in case my laptop goes kaput (although flash drives are useful too, of course).

I buy CDs for the same reasons. I am old enough to have appreciated the tactile aspects of a well done release - cover art, liner notes, and packaging. Punk kids miss out on these things that make bring additional enjoyment to the music. I mean who didn't like getting Purple Rain on purple vinyl and a poster inside? Or Controversy with the infamous shower poster? Or 1999 with all the lyrics printed on the dust sleeves and the eyeballs on the labels?

In a time when music videos are not nearly as relevant - or good - as they were in the 80s (MTV doesnt even show them around the clock anymore), an visible and tangible component to the music is being killed off. Physical backups in the form of CDs are still viable and wanted by many.

For the most part, I stopped buying Prince physical releases sometime in the early 2000s. Now I find that they're becoming increasingly unavailable at the usual record shops, so I decided to try to complete my collection of official releases. I've been on a mad tear on Ebay here recently! Looking for a copy of NEWS - if anyone wants to gift a brother cool

I really do not know anyone who “buys” physical media. CD’s are an awful media. Physical media I’d dead. I’ll but t-shirts and other collectibles though. But streaming and digital media is where music is at for the foreseeable future.

I got it and 4ever and I will get future releases on physical from Amazon because they include the MP3 rips both download and streaming. I opened PRD and played the DVD once... and put it up... 4ever is still in the shipping envelope... I am not even 100% I opened the envelope?

The reason was the physical is like $3 more than the MP3...so why not (it is like movies i have seen digital only for $20 and Blu-Ray, DVD, and digital for $24... (which is a trick i know) but why get the digital only?

To be fair, a lot of young people are buying vinyl again for this precise reason. I can even buy vinyl in my local supermarket now – didn’t think I’d see that in my lifetime. The timing of this resurgence is a bit of a shame though, a lot of my favourite 2nd hand record stores closed in the late 90s / early 2000s. sad

I'm an "old punk" and I purchased physical records for 20 years, then gave-up on them pretty easily. All my friends did. So I don't think it's cool to prey on those "young punks" just because they are young. It's true that browsing a booklet and smelling the paper was nice. But it had little to do with enjoying the music, and liner notes can almost always be found on Discogs if one wants to know the records' credits.

Eeveryone may have their own preferences, but leave the "young punks" alone: they are the future and we're old news.

I love vinyl but it’s impractical today. I hate CD’s. CD’s are a dead medium for good reason. With higher speed download rates and cheaper storage, better quality mainstream downloads are future.

I don’t know… Most of my P-Funk collection consists of original vinyl copies that I collected in my teens. I’d feel like I was only getting half the concept without Pedro Bell's/Overton Loyd's elaborate artwork... the stories, the jokes, the hidden messages etc. smile

Yeah but it’s impractical. Try playing vinyl in your car, on you headphones on a jog, in an airplane. It’s cool if you have a contraption to play it on, and I have all my old 12” still, but I’m never going to buy a record player again. I’ll buy an Alexa or AirPlay speakers before I and MOST ALL consumers ever think of getting a record player. It’s a spectacularly small niche market.
Cool, but impractical for most people today. CD’s on the other hand have no love or worth by most people. They are just plain horrible for so many reasons. So glad they along with DVD’s are dead.

That argument been had since 1995 when vinyl basically no longer existed. Its fine if you are okay with listening to mp3 streams, but numbers don't lie...Vinyl purchases have spiked 200% and count for 14% of all purchsses in 2017 compared to 1% in 2000.

Cd's are still great, perfect sound forever! Like vinyl theyll never reach anything close to peak sales again but there will be a revival in less than a decade, they will survive. Downloads on the other hand will be dead and replaced by full on streaming in less than 5 years.

Exactly! It's all part of the total package. Those records become a part of you, even the scratches... They're your scratches! Just like some of the old Tintin comic books that I have that fall apart, but include some drawings I made inside as a kid... Nothing digital will ever compare to that.

I dont get the appeal of streaming; not even of downloads. The first one you cant listen to when offline or when the song is not available, the second is inferior sound quality (and does anybody play those on a real quality sound set - i mean not via pc?)
Humanity is passed its peak, new humans are happy with lousy half-solutions. No more pushing for the better options.
CD's and DVD's are still way above. And vinyl still sits on top, but agreed the loss in quality sometimes is accepted for the gain in comfort, which is huge.

Downloads will always be available. CD’s certainly do not last forever and the hardware is not available in cars anymore is certainly dead as far as companies still making them. I give them a generous 5 years before the are completely abandoned but for a niche company.

CD only reissue label started last year

https://www.supermegabot.com/

(admittedly small) talk of a CD revival

http://thequietus.com/art...pact-discs

you're not wrong about it being niche though. Just as vinyl resurgence has fairly hit the ceiling already, these things have both been replaced by streaming.

I use all 3 formats regularly, CD's are the perfect medium for boxsets and long compilations.
