Studio Version of Purple Rain NO TROLL THREADS! NO SOLICITING FOR BOOTLEGS! Discussion is fine, so long as the bootleg is not being promoted e.g. pre-release; requests/offers to share or copy, and links to download or bootleg sites are not. Posting Prince and associated artist videos from sites such as YouTube is also not allowed. Posts of this nature will be deleted and repeat offenders will be first warned, and then banned. Troll threads, fake tracklists, and attention seeking rumor threads will be also be swiftly dealt with. These rules are strictly enforced!
********
I'm sure this has been discussed, but is there a studio version of Purple Rain? I know there are rehearsals, etc., but there has to be a nearly complete studio version. |

Let's be honest - stupid people thought that. To think Prince did not have a studio version of that song was unreasonable.
And honestly, the album version is all but a studio version. The amount of overdubs Prince did because he didn't like a band member's playing practically makes it a studio version. That goes for all three of those songs, and even "The Bird".
Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking. |

What was wrong with their playing? Its hilarious to me that P replays their parts for the recordings and then still gives them credit for playing on the albums. In a round about way, they obviously deserve credit if they came up with parts of the song's arrangements and background music (whatever you want to call it) during rehearsal and live performance, but he still has to redo it? Damn, he could be highstrung.LOL

I would expect that there is. Wasn't there the story that he offered the track to Stevie Nicks? I remember her saying that she was offered the music track but didn't know what to do with it so she turned it down. Next time she heard it, it was Purple Rain. RIP |

I'm sure there are numerous studio versions. We got a clip of a re-recorded version from 94 on the Purple Medley |

It's out there. It sounds a little thinner than the album version we know, but otherwise perfect audio. They used the original album intro opening chords because they seemed to be missing, but it's complete, including the 4th verse and original long guitar solo. |

Check out Duane Tudahl's book about the Purple Rain sessions. The time he spent overdubbing stuff like "Baby I'm A Star" or "I Would Die 4 U" is staggering compared to how he usually worked before and after. One engineer noted how Prince was overdubbing a Time song (possibly "The Bird" but I forget off hand), and redid Jesse's guitar part saying Jesse "wasn't a very good guitar player". The engineer also noted it was just a really nasty comment from Prince about someone like that. Granted, it was at a time when there was a lot of strife in The Time etc in 1983/4 when the movie was finishing up and The Time was all but broken up anyway.
So that's why I say the stuff on Purple Rain, while some of the live stuff is in it, don't be fooled. Much of it is overdubs by Prince.
Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking. |
