The sanctimonious substance dependency argument is a bit ironic.

ya it is, but hardly uncommon, addicts rationalize all kinds of stuff and project. However, it's easy to understand not wanting someone smoking indoors, it stinks, and for a singer it can irritate the voice and lungs. most places don't allow indoor smoking anymore, nothing unusual about that.

No reason at all. Aged 12 though blur were my favourite group in the world, a million times more exciting than that soppy Prince fella singing about the Most Beautiful Girl in the World and changing his name. Damon Albarn is a major talent, up there with the very best. Should you care though? Not in the slightest.

never heard of him, not to say he may not be talented, lots of unknown talent out there.

Love how the Americans say 'who' and 'one hit wonder'.

It's like the Brits saying the same about Michael Stipe (except Damon Albarn is still making hit records, in fact, he released a new one yesterday).

Personal favourite was always this:

Shame all Prince has been reduced to is an addict by some, and they use this as an answer to every move, mood, look, etc., that he made in life now. sad

Hey everybody, PeteSilas has never heard of Damon Albarn. Finally we get to heart of the matter. Damon Albarn really is a nobody. It’s official.

Fucking hell, the idiocy of people on this site is staggering...
The guy didn't want to be a fucking retard in front of Prince while working with him... What's not there to understand??

It's like one of those dumbfuck alcoholics being denied a drink while hobbying around, I don't know about people on here, but deny someone their weak-minded adopted addictions and they turn into fucking retarded cunts and that is obviously not what this guy wanted, especially around someone like Prince...

Yes, he did say that stuff and implied what you just so eloquently stated (LOL) but he went on to say that in his studio he would let people do whatever they wanted because that is what makes a good host. That is what most of us are referring to.

I'm a huge fan of Albarn, Blur, Gorillaz and in particular Graham Coxon guitarist for Blur his music is good. I would imagine this was during Blur's heyday? and I'm not surprised. They were young and idiots. I think a collaboration would have been more interesting in Gorillaz mode when Albarn was older and wiser. Eventually, all the guys in Blur got clean and not sure if Damon even smokes anymore. I always thought "the X's face" had a Gorillaz feel. Also I would say Blur never broke America but they were huge in the UK rest of world and battled with Oasis a lot. They were overshadowed by Seattle bands in US. Blur got fucked by SBK records early on and SFA had a connection to them.

What are you outraged about today? CNN has not told you yet?

Pete definitely some good music to explore. Gorillaz, Blur, Albarn solo, Graham Coxon many solid releases and actually musically diverse. I think after Graham left band for rehab the other guys grown up. But back in day they would do stuff like get piss drunk stupid and lay on the streets. There were stories about them acting ridiculous in London. That would have never worked with Prince but I could see it happening but also I would not be surprised that Prince was aware of them around Parklife era 1994. If he knew anything about what was happening in UK 1994 he had to know Blur.

So now Prince is a bad host? falloff

I know quite a few musicians and not smoking in the studio while working is normal. It's not good for the equipment either.

The good music venues banned smoking here before the city did. That cloud of smoke blows straight at the stage while people watch the band and it's awful, even for the other patrons. Imagine being a horn player and inhaling a big gulp of smoke before your solo.

This is an amusing story, that's all. Has nothing to do with if a musician is good or not.

It’s all in the timing. It might have worked out between them in the last few years. Prince would have been more sympathetic based on all the stuff we’re finding out about him now.

Agree, particularly with Gorillaz, some really good tunes. Give them a go, you may be pleasantly surprised.

that's probably not far from the truth, smokers are horrible nothing can stop them. I know, everyone in my family but me and my stepdad smokes. My mom got out of heart surgery, got home lit up, next day she died. can't stop em. my brother is the same, he was going to go to arizona using a rental car until he found out that he couldn't smoke in it. They say it's a harder habit to break, right up there with heroin if i'm remembering right.

Ah well shame he couldn't put his habits aside just for a moment with the purple one... That said Damon has now reached his own high musical stature, was appointed OBE in 2016 and has also been leading various musical humanitarian projects in the background... So a very prolific artist who is highly regarded, at least here in the UK, for many good reasons.

This is one of my favourite Damon song (from Blur's 'Think Tank' album):

Easy on the offensive language, old boy!
No need to get worked up about it.
Damon probably got cold feet and pushed this story. I mean why would someone smoke in front of someone who didn't like it? That would be rude and weird.
I used to prefer Blur over Oasis, but overtime, Oasis's songs have stood the test of time better. That whole Brit rock/ pop period was just so cumbersome, and Blur just come over as art school muso's, and with Gorillaz just trying too hard to be cool. As for Damon himself, god, what an awful monotone voice he has. Boring.

Yeah, Britpop was a hype back then, especially in the British music press, which created a whole Blur vs Oasis battle. When Terence Trent d'Arby became famous, he knew it wouldn't last forever and he said something like: "I realize the British music press creates a new star every six months." The same thing happened with Britpop. Personally, I don't think any of it has stood the test of time very well, but 90s music, whether it's grunge or r&b or nu soul just never moved me...

While i personally care about prince’s music more, i think he was being a prick as usual. Albarn has been more relevant than prince for the past two decades if not more. Prince should have realized he was working with another artist, not a lackey or protege. It’s not about smoking, it’s about prince exerting control. And albarn would have non of it, and justifiably so. God knows how many chances prince friterred away to bring some oomph in his sound in his post-80s years.

Prince was not a prick 24 hours a day, dude. Its totally not unreasonable or unusual to have a non-smoking policy in his studio. If Damon had another reason and used smoking as an excuse, maybe you would have a point. But strictly hating on Prince for a non-smoking policy is silly. I used to smoke (For seven years--about a pack a day), I couldn't smoke at work. Very few places allow smoking any more and anyone who would expect the right to smoke in someone else's place is a spoiled brat.

While what u say is true for a corporate environment or a household, artists are different beasts and need their quirks. Prince needed opioids or uppers in the studio, for all we know. If you are working with bb king, would you tell him to stop smoking? If you are working with freddie mercury, could you tell him not to snort a line or two? If you are making a movie with satyajit ray, could you tell him to stop smoking? Artists are creative people, and they need to be in the zone at work. Damon albarn would have thought only about the smoke, and not the work, inside the studio, hence he refused.

Well, that would be fine. But Prince not wanting people smoking in his own studio doesn't make him a control freak or prick...ITS HIS CREATIVE SPACE AS WELL...and not breathing someone else's second hand smoke is understandable. HIs own addictions have nothing to do with it. There are other considerations like smell and damage to equipment etc.

"If I’ve invited someone to my studio, they’re my guest, and there aren’t any conditions like that."

That's a shame, I think Damon is great. But I would not let anyone smoke in my house or in my office, so he is/was wrong and stupid. My house, my rules.

When you are a guest there ARE conditions, you are supposed to behave according to your host's wishes, no? I mean, my friend's twins have started crawling around the house and she does not allow anyone to come in the house with their shoes on. I abide.

The best part of it is that he actually gave up smoking. Hahahahahaa!
