once the masters are "digitized" ....will they be returned to PP?? First, I can't imagine how long it will take to digitize all that music or how long it takes... But once it's done, will those tapes be returned to PP? Or will they stay with Iron Mountain? If they're not what becomes of the vault, I think it would be cool to see on a tour of PP

No. “After reviewing the storage conditions at Paisley Park and out of concern regarding the consequences of a fire or other loss at the facility, Comerica determined that it was necessary to transfer the audio and visual content to a secure location where all of the original content could be securely stored and digitized as a safeguard against the destruction or loss of any original content,” the company said.

One would hope not. | |

It would be so wonderful to get to be inside the vault. It is in the basement though, so I would imagine you would have to use the stairs, as the elevator (I think) was walled off. From what I can tell from old tapings, you entered it through a room full of his awards, photos, and gold & platinum records, etc. Who know is all that is still there... Good morning children...take a look out your window, the world is falling...

. Digitizing is only part of what they're doing. Conservation is the main goal. © Bart Van Hemelen

. exactly. just like the recent project to save Zappa's vault. if the tapes got returned to paisley they would just continue to deteriorate. even after being preserved in other formats, it would still be sad to me for them just to be left to rot.

As an earlier post said, it would be cool to photograph and create empty-box replicas of what was in there (sans the clutter).

There will NEVER be tours of the vault (whether fake or real). Why?
Keep the vault mysterious; otherwise, you're trying to take money from people based on "look at these fake boxes and crates we threw in here". Welcome to "the org", laytonian… come bathe with me.

it could turn into that momentous scene from "Mother!"

Excuse my ignorance...
Once they are digitized, what is the purpose of preserving or conserving? I would assume that once they are digitized that they could easily be backed-up and there would be no need for the original media. Is this just for sentimental reasons, or is there another importance to the original media once it has been digitized?
Thanks for the insight!

. Have you never read anything about archiving movies and recordings, etc.? Or even looked at your own experiences? Never had unreadable CDRs? Defunkt hard drives? Outdated hardware (e.g. Jaz drives,...)? © Bart Van Hemelen

Maybe I don't undersatnd what is being preserved. I have taken old cassette tapes and digitized them. Now they exist as flac files on my hard drive and I have multiple back-ups of the flac file - like I do with all of my files. But the cassetttes were thrown in the trash - I didn't preseve the cassettes.

Imagine it in terms of the movie industry. A huge amount of films were digitised for release on DVD and a lot of people probably thought "oh we don't need to keep all of these 32mm prints any more now we have the digital version". And then all of a sudden Blu-Ray comes along. Then 4k. And all of these new formats require new transfers to achieve the best possible quality.
