Like most all-time great and unique recording artists, Prince had his prime period. In his case, it was roughly 1981 to 1988 (could stretch it back to 1979 if you like).

It doesn't mean there aren't superb moments after the 1988 tour. There are several such. And of course his entire career's work plus the available outtakes makes an enormous body of work that I'm really glad we have.

But, I personally don't think there is any way Prince's post-1987 albums could be made truly "great" with just some editing. Albums like Graffiti Bridge and Diamonds & Pearls certainly have more than enough good tunes to potentially be truly great albums, but simply editing them down doesn't make them great. For example, look at how much "Still Would Stand All Time" lost between its 1987-88 genesis and its 1990 official release. The situation after 1987-88 is not albums being too long -- it's rather that the music was not as brilliantly recorded as before.

I agree that just cutting songs from albums would not make albums great. I seriously think if all his work was available from the post 80's period (live as well would be great--but primarily outtakes, different versions, stuff in the vault, limited releases, deep cuts etc) and the best recordings/versions were categorized or placed on albums, he would have just as many great albums as the 80's if not more--seeing as all this music took 30 years to make. I imagine some of the demos for the more over-produced of his recordings were superior before he tinkered with them too much. I think Rosie Gaines is great, but there has got to be more subtle versions of the song Diamonds and PEarls somewhere in his vault (especially without the D-to the-I-to-the-A-to to-M....part). I have heard his demo without her and I quite like it. Maybe, there is one with her that is also more subtle.

In prince’s case i think more is more, not less. Trying to trim the albums is neither here nor there because he wrote so much, and there will always be a lot of outtakes or songs from the same sessions which go together. It’s how history will perceive him, as a man who wrote big fat pop tomes, not slim novellas. For eg., a friend recently listened to the new purple rain deluxe for the first time. He had not heard purple rain before. For him, it’s a triple album. The songs are now intertwined, inseparable. His first reaction was, disc 2 is the best! Yes, i kid you not. His second was, “how many other triple albums does prince have?” In time, all of the 80s releases will cease to be 45-minute lps, but mor extended releases which will become the new standard. It’s already happening with some 60s acts who were far less prolific than prince.

Well put. More was indeed more.

The dude was so prolific and so good at so many different things. Over time, I found myself just wanting more and more and was glad when he seemed to just "spew" songs, even if individual albums weren't as strong as, say, Purple Rain or SotT. I loved the NPGMC tracks and the stuff he would just drop on us out of nowhere.

I wanted everything I could get my hands on and welcomed al of it, even if it wasn't always up my alley or to my taste. It was almost always interseting if I didn't care for it.

You want to cut the D to the I to the A to the M part? C’mon now. That’s one of best parts of the songs. The song is not subtle — it’s bombastic which is ok every once in a while.

Is it an awful thing to say but don't you listen to a whole host if his albums differently now he's passed?

While he was alive I think subconsciously or even consciously because he was so prolific, if an album didn't hit an all tine high you discounted far more readily than maybe you should. Now it's like you can come up for air and give more context. Time to digest the stuff.
Having said that I'm transferring this priblem to youtube everytime I see "unreleased" single!!

It's not awful, it's a legit point. Works of art are examined differently after the artist has passed on. Visual artists experience this more than anyone.

I wouldn't say Graffiti Bridge (the song), Tick, Tick Bang, Elephants & Flowers are great.
.
Joy In Repetition, The Question Of U, We Can Funk, Thieves In The Temple - yes. Some will point out that all but Thieves were recorded in the 80's.
.
I agree on general point of thread though as my favourite era is Symbol - Come - Gold - Exodus

Honestly, I think TGE comes closest to greatness though the title track is the one I'd vote off the island.

prince is borderline great. I'd cut Tony M's parts.

Come just didn't really do it for me.

At the same time the argument can be made that Come is the most cohesive of the three.
