Carol Cooper is one of the most underrated music journalists, and this interview is one of the best interviews that Prince has ever done. She got Prince to discuss race and aesthetics in such a clear and engaging way that few have been able to accomplish. I just love her work.

Thanks Lovejunky!
Cool interview! I love Prince's answers.
I hadn't seen it, given that I didn't get onboard the fam/fan train until 1984! [Edited 5/25/18 17:41pm]

Guys -- you do realize this wasn't an actual interview, right? The article starts out: "The thing to bear in mind is that Prince does not do interviews. He certainly didn't do this one." And right before the Q&A text starts, it says: "So maybe His Royal Badness will excuse our own exercise in fantasy on the following "interview.""

Wow, good catch disch. Thanks for the clarification. This would explain why it is not listed on princevault.com....

Wow, she is a great writer, and I think, had Prince and his music pegged very well. Although her "interview" with Prince was in fact both her Q&A, her "Prince imagined" answers seem very accurate with regard to how he would have responded. It was great to read.

Totally Missed that....

SO MAYBE HIS ROYAL BADNESS will excuse our own exercise in fantasy on the following 'interview.' I was dreaming when I wrote this,.....

He stopped doing interviews altogether at some point during the Controversy tour. His first one after several years was the 1985 RS interview titled "Prince Talks". One of the best. He really opened up on that one.

That picture though...at the top of the article. Sexy and sad at the same time. Just gorgeous.

Just found the interview he did before not talking again for 2 years. Really really good. He talks about his childhood, the music, even the Rolling Stones concert in 1981. Very candid interview, and he seems more authentic than in later years. * https://sites.google.com/site/prninterviews/home/musician-september-1983
