I was working with a bunch of 6th graders last week. And after a presentation, the gym speakers played pop songs. An old Elton John song (I believe it was Sad SONGS say so much) came on and 20 or so 6th graders from 2018 were singing a 35 year old song. I kept wondering how they knew the song. It turns out it was in a movie (I believe it was Trolls or SIng). After hearing that Spike Lee was going to use Mary Don't You Weep in his credits for a movie in August called BlackKKKlansman...it got me thinking..that Spike Lee might be the only one who ever used Prince music well. Girl 6 uses it well and extensively. It was nice seeing Prince music in Bamboozled. Prince music was used poorly in Kingsmen 2 and it is rarely used elsewhere. MOre of his music needs to be in movies and tv...that's how the young learn about the music of the past. The Goodfellas movie was how I learned about the merits of classic rock at 15. The soundtrack changed my life.

Great use of PRince was in SPike's She Gotta Have it reboot..the show was flawed but the dance sequence set to Raspberry Beret was awesome. Can't find a good clip of it now, but it was dandy.

It would be great and I'd like to see more than just his 80s music as a background on the big screen. I would imagine the biggest obstacle would be the estate.

I remember hearing some stuff from 1999 in one of Tom Cruise’s early films. I think that it was Risky Business, in which case it would have been more or less contemporaneous with the album. It was background music at a party if I recall.

Yup. Hell, they featured him in BvS I can't think they and the estate would pass up a chance for product placement in this film.

I want to keep this topic open. Think about the later popularity of ABBA.. I know they were huge in Europe but they were never that big in America. It took Mama Mia and to a lesser extent Muriel's Wedding to gain popularity. THink what movies like Harold and Maude did for Cat Stevens (the entire soundtrack of that film is Cat Stevens) Think what Scorsese did for classic rock. Think what Tarantino did for oscure 70's soul, funk and disco (as well as 60's surf music.) Movies do need Prince music, but his legacy needs movies as well. I wish there were more Spike Lee's out there, combing his massive catelogue for songs that fit moments in the movies. If the estate would think more about legacy building and make P's music cheap to attain for movies (but put some limits on disrespectful usage), then P's music could gain a new audience.

Very valid point! I've always enjoyed Taratino's scoring for his films because it wasn't top 40 stuff back in the day.

And to the OP, perhaps let's stretch that out to the small screen. The Sopranpos always had a great obscure tune at the ending credits that kind of topped off the episode in music. How big did "Don't Stop Beliving" become in the mid 2000s? Big screen to me now is just fluff and no substance. Small screen takes bigger chances and is edgier.

Nah. I had it on cassette. 1999 changed my life at the age of 16. I didn't own a CD player until maybe 1993...92...I forget. I'd say 1992. I remember buying it as a display model on the cheap and putting the store's Pink Floyd's "Wish You Were Here" CD in it to make sure it worked.

I never took took the CD out of the boom box so I got it for free. True story. Still have it too.

I didn't know it was on the risky business soundtrack. I only remember Old time rock n roll. I agree with the poster, movies are a good way to start in bringing his music to younger folks (as long as those songs are used effectively.)

What have you given the world (or even this forum)? Beyond yelling at clouds I mean.

Music in the background, everyday life music would be exciting. Not as 'soundtrack' music.

Like Diana goes to an underground club and Computer Blue is playing.
