Geniunely generous Prince moments...

Remind me of some. I just read some diatribe on youtube from someone who thought Prince was a completely selfish man. He had certainly a selfish side but its seems like after he died, people did mention giving moments. Help me remember some..LOL.

HEre are a few moments or tendencies that I think would be easy to miss or dismiss...

1.) His calling out his musicians names in concert. I am sure there was stress for them sometimes when he did that.. But he didn't have to give them exposure. He could have been tough on them and not called attention to them while they gave solos... In interviews, he has mentioned how talented his band is AND mentioned the individcual's names (and not just the classic musicians like Maceo Parker and Larry Graham). I don't think that is the standard behavior of all pop stars.. Some musicians probably should have gotten a little more mention (Sonny T and Mark Brown for example) and he did struggle with credit-giving back in the day. But I still contend that he provided exposure for musicians more than many pop stars.

2.) Playing parts on others albums (not necessarily asking for credit.)-Madonna's LIke a Prayer, Stevie Nicks--Stand Back.

3.) mentorship..I am not talking about the NPG produced proteges (that could be construed as not particularly selfless..I am talking about some of the young musicians he hung with later in life who didn't feature on his albums.

4.) the times he did give quietly to local charities around Paisley and in the places he toured. Maybe you can help me recall some of those but there seemed to be mention of those by his associates after he died. I also recall family members of band mates funerals paid for.

5.) Cheap aftershows for the devoted fans.

6.) forgiving those who badmouthed him or yelled at him. putting their musical connection above pettiness. I am not saying he always did this, but he did do this.

7.) paying for or giving homes to some of his musicians (the Weltons, Larry Graham. Kirk Johnson I believe) and his family members (parents). Paying for his sister's rehab. He didn't foot the bill for everything in her life, but I am not sure he should have had to.

8.) making his musicians laugh. humor in the workplace is a gift.

9.) bonding with the children of his band members.

10.) making sure there were no bad seats in the house.

Anymore? Please keep it to the generous moments.. We know he had a selfish side but that's not my point.

He never let his right hand know what his left hand was doing. That is the richest and most important part of his legacy.

Yes. It was on the Org. Initially, Susan refused because she thought the phone call from whoever (an assistant probably) was a scam, because they asked for banking account info to do a direct transfer. She later got it worked out. None of them know why he did it.

He donated to a fund for the victims of the 35W bridge collapse. That occurred in 2007. And also gave $200K to the Harvest Prep and Seed Academy in Minneapolis.

Playing a full concert for deaf children Purple Rain era. That one always got to me. For one, it didnt seem like him at the time becasue he was always sneering in most ics it seemed to me. I was also wondering how his persona would go down with a school for the deaf concert. Of course it was toned down by recorded accounts.

During one of his "The Prince Tribute" podcasts (April 27, 2016 or May 5, 2016) Dr. Funkenberry spoke about how Prince always asked him about his health and paid Dr. Funkenberry's medical bills, no questions asked.

I loved what someone that worked at a grocery store in Minneapolis said about him coming in late at night and buying shelves of groceries to anonymously donate to local shelters.

Here’s a cute story I found yesterday while looking at old threads.

“prince is only a few years older than me. it was the lovesexy tour in nyc.
i had a friend who got me a backstage pass to the the show at the garden. my ticket is in storage, oct 1988 i believe...
it was amazing, and i was also so very shy and excited about the whole thing, i was numb & mute, and was just hoping to stay out of everyones way... i was approached a few times by two different bodyguards about my name and phone number...i had just moved to nyc and didnt have my own phone yet, so i gave them my work phone number....

i was told the aftershow was at nells. so i left the show early and got to nells so i could sit upfront.
i sat front row center at nells, in my cheap lil stretchy black betsy johnson dress lololol drinking water and eating french fries (cuz i was broke)....prince drank out of my water glass the whole night and ate my fries!!....he asked me if i 'drank' and i shook my head no, and he said 'me neither, can i have some?, ...of course i said yes.....i was approached to leave with them after the show, but i was so terrified, i declined, because i was just unsure of the position i may end up in.....i had barely enough money to get home etc etc
and then...at my job...
there was a reception desk with many receptionists, and someone sent me flowers everyday, for TWO WEEKS...but there was never a card, and i think the girls at the desk were jealous, and they took them sad i never found out who it was, and .....i was soooo bummed
but, i still have the glass, and my napkin that he used lololol.
and my almost memory. lesigh. smile”

Also they found a note and contact information for someone who wanted to buy one of his houses (I forget which one).
He kept the note because in the event he did ever sell it he planned on calling them to give them first dibs.
He thought about things like this.
Prince was a good person.

Prince behaved kindly toward me at one of the aftershows in 2002. It's a brief experience I treasure.

Apples didn't get the $$ she thought it was a scam and before they could get it worked out Prince died. The other 2 got the money.

Didn't he pay for others' medical bills. I seem to remember Jill's maybe? and a musican of James Brown's. Also, I believe he was involved in helping Rosie Gaines with her medical problems. He also seemed very kind and understanding where Amy Winehouse was concerned.

He was also pretty classy when MJ was accused of Child molestation. (Even LaToya seemed to pubically bash her brother for possibly molesting kids. She later stated that her controlling husband made her do it.)

Another one I found. After working with MIsty Copeland, he gave money to the ABT and saved a Harlem Ballet School that she had been associated with. It was going to be shut and he gave it enough money to stay open..and it is still open now. Just read this.

Right after P died DrFunkenberry posted a podcast and he mentioned a time when he fell ill. Prince found out and paid all his medical bills and rent (I believe). Once he was better, Prince would always have a seat reserved for him to sit during a show and would ask him each time how he was doing/feeling. Drfunkenberry broke down while telling the story and it was at that point that I realized the depth of their relationship. It was a heart warming story and proves P was a giver.
