Now that you mention it, that is what blows my mind more than anything. Including how many people he somehow had the time to spend with. WHERE did he get all those hours?? I suppose he never counted time so in his mind being creative had no off switch. Must go down in history in similar fashion on how the Egyptians built the pyramids. I dont want to blow any smoke about "Prince's excellence," but... over the past 20 years: Has Radiohead been funky? Has Radiohead been fun? > No, and no. > That's all I wanted to say.

BVH: Prince didn't weasel out of anything. We're all certain by now that he had PLENTY of recordings to offer to the record label--just check any recent thread on the vault. WB wanted to let him go and they offered a different agreement to get that done. The battling was taxing on the label, and the label obviously had been taxing to Prince who wished to achieve goals that WB was unwilling or unable to help him realize at that point. Understand that any artist has the right to feel that way and to make a change. Look at what Tom Petty had been up to while disagreeing with his own labels' actions (https://www.cnbc.com/2017...ustry.html)--understand also that Prince never filed for bankruptcy, btw. Petty's circumstances were not perfectly comparable to Prince's, but it remains to say that one just might want to fight against a contract. > RodeoSchro: Please pardon my indolence, but BVH has been so stuck on that sucky 90s deal--incidentally, that Prince quickly came to understand the true value of after failing to read the fine print--that it appears to have deeply altered his appreciation of the artist that this forum is dedicated to. He'll have to live with that and find his own way out of his old funk; I doubt that he would be aided by anybody else's desire to help. Don't handicap yourself. Your offer only fuels his disdain, I'd say, if you give a care! > More than enough said.

It's just all of it put together. Tons of people are great at something. Very few of them are the best or even arguably the best in the world. Even fewer are the best ever at what they did. And even fewer of them still could be said that there'll never be another who could possibly best that person.
And then there's Prince.
If Prince focused on ONE thing, he would have easily been spoken of as the best that ever lived at that task.
If he focused on guitar, they'd speak of Jimi, Clapton, and Van Halen like "they're great, then there's Prince."
If he focused on songwriting, they'd have him on Mount Rushmore with Lennon
If he focused on choreography, he'd be talked about as the best ever
If he focused on fashion, they'd be saying at the Oscars, "She's wearing a Versace, and she's wearing a Prince!"
If he focused on classical piano, ... best ever
If he focused on producing, what, "Babyface" would eclipse him? Jimmy Jam & T.L? Um, no.
But he didn't focus on one thing. He did all that I listed, he did it better than anybody in his lifetime, and on top of that he made movies, put on shows that changed people, and he wore 5" high heels, and nobody said a word about it.
He was fearless and had 100% confidence in his art at all times. It's undeniable that there has never lived another soul who could do what he did, and just as undeniable that there will never be another who can as long as man walks this planet.

Many people who try to be "well rounded" inevitably fail because they never end up specializing or being exceptional at one or two things. Prince was an exception to this. When it came to music he was GREAT at playing so many instruments, at dancing, and so many other aspects of his craft. Among those things at which he was GREAT, there is a subgroup of things at which he was INCREDIBLE (in my opinion): as a guitarist, as a vocalist, as a songwriter/composer, as a live performer (although I never saw him live, I have seen videos), as a producer, and as a pianist/keyboardist. . I'm probably biased because I f-ing love Prince, but I can't think of anyone in the 20th century as comprehensively or thoroughly talented as he was in so many aspects of making music. Stevie Wonder, Bruce Springsteen, and Elton John are in the discussion, but none of them could play as many instruments as Prince. They are all incredible songwriters. Elton and Stevie are as good on the piano/keyboards (if not better), but none of these three could come close to Prince on the electric guitar and Prince beats all three of them in dance. Not only that, but Prince's catalogue is the most varied because he TRANSCENDS genres since his styles are so varied. Listen to, for example, Diamonds and Pearls, Chaos and Disorder, and Lovesexy. He composed two best-selling soundtracks: Purple Rain and Batman. There were very few aspects of making music that he could not do. He is, in my book, the greatest popular music musician of the 20th century. Live 4 Love ~ Love is God, God is love, Girls and boys love God above

oh pleaaaase!! Radiohead makes Prince bleak over the last 20 years. His cover of Creep was so-so at best (much shouting, little content), and that solo - while good - was pretty generic to his own high standards. [Edited 5/16/18 6:12am] Yes the Solo was basically uninspired and soulless compared to his finer moments. It’s also very repetitive. It’s still cool, but I’m sure he had probably never even given the Solo a thought till he was doing it
