As for Phase 1; it has its moments like Hardrocklover, 1000 X’s & O’s and June but most of the rest I can live without. But I guess you can’t knock him in a way for giving Josh an opportunity |

Emotional-wise, it's as if they didnt exist. They seem like a K-Tel release of P songs from a 2015 vault. "Climb in my fur." |

I still can't accept HitnRun Phase 1 and HitnRun Phase 2 as proper P albums.
I see them more of archive releases (like "The Vault" or "Crystal Ball") than albums.
To me the real P's last album is AOA.
I share and endorse this sentiment. Check me out and add me on:

RAVE is still the album I listen to the least. But I will also agree that Phase One and Two are not really Albums, they are packaged recordings that really did not have an album IMO. Phase One to me is almost like the things he left off AOA, or maybe originally he planned on a double album and WB said no again. I'm not crazy about Phase One because he almost is hardly even on the album it seems. Phase Two just the choices of the songs and the playing and musicians it was all top notch stuff. And i agree i would have loved to have seen what he would have done with this era of female proteges he had like Andy, Judith and also 3RD EYE

what i took away from the things that were said at the time of release is that *probably* prince had a few songs (near) completed and let josh mix them further.
then there were songs that started out as instrumentals by josh, with no prince input yet at that stage. prince then put his vocals and guitar over the top of those, plus perhaps a fingersnap or a piano line here or there.
prince wrote all the lyrics.
donna did the guitar solo on 'ain't about 2 stop', didn't she? and a few more people might have contributed little bits.
so to me it's still 70% prince.

So basically, Josh was just another of the bitches to whom Prince threw an album as a consolation prize.

Despite the two or three interesting moments, HnR P 1 is the only Prince album that I'm not interested in hearing again. It's like he finally did the one thing that so many others desired him to do that I hoped he never would: let some young pop or hip-hop person produce him. Beginning your album with a song that features someone else singing lead is a low point, and the album just gets worse from there. "Fallnlove2nite" and "1000 X's and O's" are the only fully developed songs. "X's Face" is funky but is just a groove that never does much, and it is just damn disappointing that there is no guitar solo on "Hardrocklover." The only thing that can save this album is if a version of "Million $ Show" with Prince singing lead is found along with a version of "X's Face" with some progression and movement and a version of "Hardrocklover" with an actual guitar solo. Other than those things being found, I have no reason to listen to this album again. But, hey, if, of all the work Prince produced, this is the only album that I find horrible, then it really was one hell of a run for this fan. 40 plus albums and one lemon, I'll take the ratio anytime. |

Wow! Pretty much, that, for me also, 1725topp!
"Million Dollar Show" and "X's Face" (for groove & silliness) are my faves here. I can't do much with many of the rest and "Hardrocklover" is rather a disappointment without more guitar.

What is amazing to me is that I think Phase 1 is one of the worst albums of all time, and that includes everyone.
And yet, I think Phase 2 is the second-best album Prince ever made, only slightly trailing "Purple Rain".
I only get sad thinking about Prince when I'm listening to Phase 2. What he was doing with pop and rock on Phase 2 was exceptional, and where he would have gone after that would have been incredible.
Wow, that's some high praise indeed. Especially for what is essentially a below average odds and ends release. Different strokes I guess. |

Yes, people on this very board bitched FOR YEARS about Prince not updating his sound or not allowing a producer to come in and make him sound "current." And then the moment he does...backlash!
I dig HNR1. I don't necessarily view it as a proper album, but there are plenty of hooks and memorable choruses. I return to it often, especially when I run. It's an excellent headphone experience. I like the updated beats and think Welton did a fine job. And June is an instant classic- should have been on AOA.

Well, I can't accept the last three releases as "true Prince albums" myself.
That's not to say there's not stuff on them that I enjoy, but none of them were presented in the same way as the albums released just under the his own name and containing only new songs were presented.
To be honest, "Exodus" is more of "a true Prince album" to me than those three. The Plectrumelectrum stuff he toyed with for ages and it's almost like he just wanted to finally get out something under the "3rdeyegirl" band moniker. The last two were more compilations than anything else. HNR Phase 1 had that "Outside producer remixes Prince" type of curiosity release feel to it and Phase 2 had just too many released songs on it for me to able to consider it "the new album by Prince".

With "Hardrocklover," I just kept waiting for that great solo that never came kinda like that time my wife promised we'd do something special when we had an empty house to ourselves, and, when we were finally alone, she showed me the paint and brushes she purchased to repaint the kitchen. I'm sure it was special for her... |

I envy you people who can jog/run with music. I jog every morning at 6:00 a.m., and I hate jogging so much there is no way I could listen to music. If I didn't like the results, I'd have stopped jogging years ago. Maybe it would help if I could find some music that went well with "I hate this shit, I hate this shit, I hate this shit." I'm open to any Prince songs that will go well with that. |

I completely agree that it's one of the best forms of exercise. That's the only reason I awake every weekday morning and do it. But, I hate it every effin' step of the way. Whether I'm outside or on the treadmill, it's 10 minutes and 55 seconds (1.3 miles) of pure hell. |

Listen to some upbeat Curtis Mayfield songs for jogging, for example Move On Up or the Superfly soundtrack. Or some Deep House stuff. Excellent music for running. Or listen to podcasts.
