Prince mention on Trading Spaces

On last nights episode of the re-booted Trading Spaces show they had two couples from Baltimore. One woman was a massive Prince fan and wanted a Prince inspired room. Hildy was the designer. The makeover was awful and other than the ping pong table there was nothing Prince about it...oh except for a toy red corvette. Needless to say the couple hated it.

This show is kind of a joke because clearly the designers know what they want to do before they get ideas from the homeowners and they pretty much do whatever they want regardless of homeowners input. Still it was cool to see Prince get mentioned on the show.

I watched it last night. Both makeovers were the worst I had ever seen on the show. Hildi actually does beautiful designs in real life, but on the show it's like she does it for the sake of shocking someone. It's really disrespectful to the homeowners who have to go back and paint over everything and fix the fuck ups she creates.

As you noted, I don't know why the designers ever ask the homeowners "what do you want to see in here?". They already have their design, their paint colors, and their fabrics picked out and done. The only time I've seen a design really take a nod from the homeowners was last week when Nate Berkus & husband Jeremiah Brent were guest designers. They respected the home and took the rooms to a new level.

Hildi doesn't listen to anyone, ever, about anything. Most designers on there are good, but she is the worst. For her to not even try to incorporate a symbol or lyrics (the woman had words painted or stenciled on her wall before it started) was just short-sighted on Hildi's part.

Both wives gave an emphatic "OH HELL NO" during the reveal. I can't blame them.

I told my friend, "I would have literally said 'nope' if they started this shit, and just not did anything." OR I thought, at least during the homework part of it I would have repainted it however I wanted and just let the designer figure it out the next day. They only have until 4pm on day 2 which really gives them about 6 or 7 hours to finish everything. There is no way the designer could try to fix anything the homeowners did or did not do overnight during their homework.

I've been designers and homeowners go off on each other. Doug got really pissy with people one time while trying put a wax over a paint job on a wall. He told them if they didn't like it they could leave. He continues doing what the waxing job and the homeowners were left standing there looking dumbfounded. They sort of just wandered off outside and hung out. Hildi is definitely the worst of all of them. Most of the others I like their design or can appreciate the care they take in it. Hildi wants a portfolio and doesn't care about anyone.

I do wonder, do the designers get any sort of brief of what the homeowners want to see in advance? If they do and still do whatever the hell they want that’s pretty shitty. Hildy could have done plenty of Prince inspiration without turning it into a themed room or anything. And where was the purple? Literally the easiest thing she could have done - incorporated purple paint and fabrics. If I was that homeowner I’d ask for a re-do.

The people apply for the show, so there are plenty of photos that production gets, measurements, the type of room and so forth for the designer to plan around beforehand. It's why it's such a dumb element in the show to ask "what do you want to see in here". It doesn't matter with some designers. They have their shit ready.

The leaves on the wall were the worst thing about that room. The red corvette was stupid and pedestrian. "Oh, let's put a dove on the tree and put a tear in its eye". Really bitch?.

The rub is that they don't get a re-do. They agree to let whatever happen and most times you agree to let the designers use anything in the house, although the homeowners can say no, not to touch anything else, or maybe "if you wanna use anything in the garage, that's fine, but nowhere else".

Honestly, if the girl wanted a Prince room, just do it herself. I could have done something for her! I had a Prince room in my home long ago.

One thing I've always wanted to do is use an overhead projector, and put the ATWIAD cover on the wall, trace it out, then repaint it as a mural. It'd just be stellar I think. You could even use The Vault pre-room area as a basis for an office or something. I would have taken the lobby and atrium area of PP as a basis for one of those rooms on Trading Spaces. The colors on the pillars, the other painting schemes are all inspiration.

I think because she knew exactly what she wanted she probably wasn’t a good candidate for the show. Still even if Hildy was aghast at doing a “Prince room” she could have incorporated some purple. I can’t stand designer snobs and she’s one of them.

Damn, this crappy ass show is still on??? Years ago, one of my wife's friends wanted us to apply to be on that show. I told her, "I don't like the show or y'all. And, just for the record, y'all are my wife's friends so I wouldn't be seen in public with y'all, especially not on that tacky ass show." Needless to say, that couple stopped coming to our house. Had I known that was all I needed to do to get rid of them, I'd done it years ago. Anyway, thanks for the memories of this crappy ass show and my wife's former annoying friends.
