But Darling Nikki did fit with the PR sound.
Cannot agree with you there. I would argue that out of ALL of Prince's albums, save possibly Lovesexy and The Rainbow Children, Purple Rain is the most tightly knitted theme/album he has done. It all fits perfectly and each track is clearly "related" to every other track. The PR album has "a sound" rather than Prince showing his huge diversity and having multiple genres on a single album (which is what he started to do in the 90s onwards).
What did I say then? |

don't bother him, he does it on purpose. Previous page with my comment as well. [Edited 5/2/18 3:44am] |

What did I say then? Man I am having a bad day. Could have sworn your post said "Darling Nikki didn't fit with PR" but you said it DID. I need to lay down LOL. 'I loved him then, I love him now and will love him eternally. He's with our son now.' Mayte 21st April 2016 = the saddest quote I have ever read! RIP Prince and thanks for everything. |

I would put an extended version of Free over Free.
A Free-remix over Free.
An alternative take of Free over Free.
Great song imho.

If one looks at earlier takes on Parade, it wasn't really a soundtrack yet. Songs like "Others Here With Us", "Old Friends 4 Sale" are specific and don't even fit the story in the movie. "All My Dreams" doesn't either (although I still think it could have replaced "Mountains" in the movie). I think as the movie took shape, Prince saw the need for other songs here or there, and the more personal or specific stuff (like the spooky "Others Here With Us") simply weren't a fit.
If Parade was just an album in general with no movie, then OHWU, OF4S, AMD would have been fine to close out the album.
Regardless of Parade being a soundtrack, Other Here With Us simply doesn't fit in; whether musically or lyrically.
And "Temptation" doesn't fit on ATWIAD musically. "Gotta Broken Heart Again" doesn't fit on Dirty Mind compared to the other tracks, some would argue. Every few albums of his has that one track. And in reality, if that's the only version we knew, we might not even argue that it does or doesn't belong on the album. I sort of wonder what else would have finally ended up on Parade if it were just another Prince album. Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking. |

Co-sign.
Great song.
And I think the lonely vibe of it blends in perfectly with the rest of the album. For some reason, I´ve always associated the 1999 album with loneliness, pain, unrequited love and a bit of a cold aura.
(Lady Cab Driver, Something in the Water, Free, Little Red Corvette and the cold vibe of Automatic). Sure , there are some upbeat songs on it, too, but to me it still feels like a rather cold album, in a good way. [Edited 5/3/18 9:29am] " I´d rather be a stank ass hoe because I´m not stupid. Gonna throw in some singles and unreleased tracks in the discussion:
"Tick Tick Bang" for "Ronnie, Talk to Russia" on Controversy
"Shockadelica" for "It" on Sign O' the Times
"Dance With the Devil" for "Lemon Crush" on Batman

Girl and She's Always in My Hair on ATWIAD.
I'd probably lose COTH and Temptation to work those in.
Large Room With No Light, Alexa De Paris and Old Friends for Sale on Parade.
I'd drop "Do U lie" and "Christopher Tracy's Parade" to squeeze those in. Losing a third song somewhere is tough though. Maybe "Life Can So Nice". Parade is such a weird album. I still can't wrap my head entirely around it. [Edited 5/3/18 16:57pm] |
