Not necessarily a B side, but I'd put Alexa de Paris on Parade instead of Kiss (which even Prince felt was out of place on that album).

We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

I know it's a sort of unpopular opinion but I believe 'Free' works perfectly within the context of the 1999 album.

It was actually THE song that got me into Prince. I had listened to 20ten (someone had given me their free copy from the newspaper), and thought, 'What's all the fuss about?', as I'd known that Prince was considered by many to be one of the greats. So my curiosity was peaked - after being disappointed by 20ten - and so I bought a copy of 1999. On first listen, it all sounded a little too electronic and the drum sounds were distracting (of course, I love it now but at the time I probably thought they sounded lazy or too 80s or something), but Free stood out. It was the song's crescendo, the guitar, and most of all, Prince's impassioned screaming. I kept playing the album back on the strength of Free, then slowly I began to love Automatic and Something in the Water (Does Not Compute), then the whole album clicked. After that I bought Parade and was blown away. And after that, I bought everything.

So I wouldn't trade Free for anything - without it I probably wouldn't be a Prince fan!

I would swap Slow Love with Shockadelica. However, if they were swapped, the If I Was Your Girlfriend/Shockadelica single release wouldn't be the best A-side/B-side of his career (arguably).

She's Always In My Hair over Tambourine. Tambourine is funky but it SCREAMS throwaway. And put She's Always In My Hair out as a single over America.

I love the killer B (sides), that Prince put out in the 80's. Along with the Beatles, the Cure, Suede (Suede did this very well sci fi lullabies is a double album that is essential to me) and to quote Annie Christian "what's fair is fair" Oasis had some great b sides and a lethal b sides album (that outstips most of there regular albums)

Prince had this competitive, they can't guard me (Kobe and Jordan reference), I can afford to put dimes on b sides that could be other peoples, album track or single or even somebodys career defining one hit wonder (look at the tracks he gave away or offered to others!)

I think Prince liked B sides, because he wanted to offer value, he could still remember being the good who didn't have everything who went outside McDonalds to smell the food, and maybe couldn't afford the album, but could buy (or steal, who knows) the single.

When Prince stopped putting out b sides it really hurt me as it took away something special from Prince's musical catalogue. I remember after Rock n Roll is Alive, they were not forthcoming, and it sucked.

TO ANSWER YOUR COOL QUESTION

Free meant a lot to Prince, I think, but I have to replace it. I think I put in Moonbeam Levels, which could have been another lost Killer B side. Ends the album with grand eloquence and introspection. A perfect artistic lead in to what will be seen by casual fans experiencing the thematics of Purple Rain as a hit film, and hit movie.

Gotta Stop Messing About should have been on Dirty Mind. Sequence it straight after Head and before Sister. Party Up meant a lot to Prince he played it on SNL, and he stole it from Morris (in exchange for creating the Time, which is Alexander O'Neals loss and one of the best deals Morris ever made) and I love the dry telecaster run out groove, to close the album, but I say end with a combo of rudeboy songs of Head,GSMA and Sister, with Sister a funky taste being left in the mouth of the listener to bookend the album.

Batman Now I don't have know problem with the BAT, but people have varying issues with this album, and I remember at the time as a new Prince fan buying older albums, it was not quite the calibre of Purple Rain, Parade, Around the World in a Day. So what do I do. Arms of Orion is a cool ballad which has a place in my heart, but I want this BATMAN album to be as funky as possible, putting his newer sound, and giving an edge to his sound. I put Arms of Orion as a leaked track, and put in 200 balloons (baby). Or I call it Joker (200 balloons) to make it a counterpoint to BATDANCE. Partyman is probably the defining Joker song on the album, but oh well. I keep lemon crush, it grew on me. I break the rules, and I put in an outtake your love is so hard and the album is a little plumper. And damn it I want SEX on the Batdance album, Scandalous is iconic, but I desperately want BATMAN to be more black album.

I take out Jughead so I can stop seeing people bitch and moan about it for the next 20 or 30 years and my life is more peaceful and less warlike. I replace it with Horny pony, but more likely call the law. In return Jughead still gets criticised, but is given more respect as a b side for CREAM (it could feature in maxi singles of the era like Cream in particular.

While your at it, don't wait for the maxi single, that too many casual fans wont buy, Make Violet the Organ Grinder as the B side for Get OFF. Now for me that is a stone cold classic single, and you have two brutally Prince sex songs back to back (or cheek to cheek, or ass to mouth, or however you want to phrase it)

And for now I am done.

Purple Rain:

"Take Me With U" could stay a duet but be on Apollonia 6's album. Add "Father's Song" after "The Beautiful Ones" or at the end of side A.

Around The World In A Day
:

In another universe, Around The World In A Day should have been called Paisley Park. It would be the first song on the album and the title track. Follow it with "She's Always In My Hair". "Temptation" should be cut down to its original length without that stupid tag ending, and add "Girl" somewhere in the tracklist.

"Hello" and "Around The World In A Day" would still be the b-sides.

Parade:
"Life Can Be So Nice" is disposable to me. "heart or $" should replace it. "Alexa De Paris" should be on there instead of "Kiss". "Kiss" is a great song, but it's the "When Doves Cry" of the album - the one created near the end of the project, the one that didn't fit and was put on at the last minute. It could have been a quirky b-side for something.

I think, in reality, that Around The World In A Day should have been another double record. Just put "Girl", a longer version of "America", "She's Always In My Hair", the original "Temptation" without the stupid tag ending (I will always call it that, btw), and "Hello" all on it. Definitely use the longer mixes of things like "Raspberry Beret", "America", "Paisley Park", and "Pop Life". All those songs have a similar feel and texture, and it would have added the oomph that some feel is missing from the record.

I absolutely LOVE Free and Something in the Water and Automatic. Those are my favorite songs on the 1999 album.

I wish he had put How Come U Don´t Call Me Anymore? on the album instead of Delirious. I know many fans love that song but it is not really my cup of tea.

Free is such an uplifting song. And Something in the Water is a masterpiece. I love love love that song in all its different incarnations that he played over the years.

Great song, great lyrics, great delivery....every single time.

And Automatic is sheer perfection. Perfect length, great look in the video, gorgeous Jill Jones, and Prince looks so cool.Great song.

Parade: take out "Anotherloverholenyohead", a song that has never appealed to me all that much, and end the album with "All My Dreams". The latter would bookend the album perfectly with "Christopher Tracy's Parade" and bring some levity immediately after an emotionally heavy ballad.

I'm with you here. Life Can Be So Nice might be favourite song from Parade... along with Christopher Tracy's Parade, New Position, I Wonder U, Under the Cherry Moon, Venus de Milo, Sometimes it Snows with April... okay, along with most the album.

Parade is just untouchable. The perfect album.

That´s a nice tracklist. She´s Always In My Hair definitely should´ve been an album song and a single. Temptation is a good song but a tad too long with the silly ending. Adding Girl and 4 the Tears in Your Eyes would´ve benefitted the album as well but I´d leave out Hello.

As much as I like that song, it is definitely not album material and is clearly a b-side to me. It would make the album sound very dated whereas the rest of your suggestions give the album a more timeless feel and the listener can relate to it much better.

Besides, Hello´s lyric would sound terribly misplaced on that album, especially on your version of the album. Adding 4 the Tears in Your Eyes is a great idea that would increase the album´s psychedelic and spiritual vibe. But Hello would ruin that vibe, even though I like the song a lot.

I understand your point about Kiss but don´t you think the album would have flopped spectacularly if he had left out Kiss?

It is one of his most recognizable songs and was quite a big hit.

Alexa de Paris would´ve been a great addition. Maybe Do U Lie should have been a b-side?

I think the only album you could argue for this is Around the World in a Day. "She's Always in My Hair" instead of "Raspberry Beret" would basically be like it is now with everyone confused how they weren't both on the album. "Girl" fits the vibe really well instead of the too-short edit of "America". "Hello" instead of "Pop Life" is the only loss to be honest.

Anotherlover is one of my least fav songs on the album but I don't think it should be removed or replaced. They had so much stuff going on in circa Parade that it should have been a double album, it feels sprawling as it is, even though it's relatively compact in length. I've never been able to satisfactorily make a tracklist that works for me though neutral

The only way I want to hear "All My Dreams" (one of my top 5 Prince bootlegs) is it segueing in from "Old Friends 4 Sale" which it originally did. In the bootlegs, you can hear the reverby-echoey outro of "OF4S" as "Ohh oohh all my dreams" comes in. T, in the alt.music.prince days, used to claim that and people thought he was crazy. Over time we realized he was right and it's audible. But that's how they were originally sequenced.

On Dream Factory it was different. But an earlier configuration of Parade had OF4S and AMD ending the album. For me, it's such an interesting juxtaposition of two very different songs, but they're sisters.

I fully agree. I´m not a big fan of Delirious and I think Irresistible Bitch would have fit much better onto that album and its cold feel and songs of unrequited love. Delirious sounds out of place.

By the way.....there´s an old version of that Cheech and Chong movie where they go to Amsterdam, and Delirious was used for a scene but later it was removed and replaced by a similar sounding, non-Prince song called Twisted.
