Absolutely loved this album from the moment I heard it, which must have been around 1985-ish when I started jazz dance classes and the teacher used to play mostly America and Raspberry Beret for our routines. I loved the music but had no idea it was by Prince until another year or so later when I became a Prince fan - via Sign O' The Times. I started buying one album after another and re-discovered ATWIAD all over again. Upon hearing America, and realising it had been Prince all along was an incredible moment. I remember running to my younger sister's bedroom jumping and yelling: 'Remember those songs the teacher played at dance class? It was Prince!! it was Priiiince!!!' Lol Happy days. Life Matters

Another example of how Purple Rain and ATWIAD are intertwined

That's Prince...always taking us(his fam) on a trip!
I was a teen back then. After playing Purple Rain to death, P puts ATWIAD out and proceeds to blow my mind!
I knew the dude was special, and ATWIAD confirmed it. The title track was like watching the Wizard of Oz for the first time, just overwhelming, Middle Eastern/Indian, and still funky.
Paisley Park never thrilled me much, but, according to some on here, the extended version is pretty cool.
Condition of the Heart is the best track on the album, in my opinion. The piano playing is superb; the other instruments like the buzzing keyboard add a surreal touch of visual with sound. The way he sings EVERY FRIGGING NOTE is so passionate. Condition makes you go through so many emotions, intensely, especially when he sings, "the fool with the Condition of the Heart"! The end, so emotional, "got a condition...of the heart" with the plaintive keyboard and echoing drum.
Raspberry Beret, with the cool video, and playfulness of it all.
Tambourine...intensity turned up again. Didn't know the song had a reference to masturbation until someone on here pointed it out. I just love the vocal pyrotechnics.
America, funky and soulful...Aye, Aye...Jimmy Nothing...never went to school...nothing made Jimmy Proud...now Jimmy live on a mushroom cloud...Amer-i-ka
Pop Life...a cool experience. Voices...outside/inside...a gym or something...children playing...funky bass and keyboard...cool vocal effects...lyrics on point...what you putting in your nose...is that where all your money goes...was an angel talking to him back then...the river of addiction flows...ahh Prince...you should have listened to yourself.
The Ladder...I usually skip over. Ta da! Church is cool but I'm not in love with gospel music, which the Ladder is.
Temptation...an audio experience...God versus the Devil inside all of us.
I knew P was a different type of artist from this album. I'm so glad, I became a follower. She's Always, Hello, and Girl are top notch, too, fun to have in my collection.
