He liked to ssssssttttrrrrrreeeeeetttttccccchhhh the truth.

Therefore, instead of only playing a "piano" he also played a keyboard, synthesizer, organ, harpsicord, etc.

Instead of only playing a "guitar", he also played acoustic guitar, electric guitar, 12 sting guitar, etc.

I think he was truly a master of several instruments - drums/percussion, bass, guitar, and piano.

I don't think so. The "horn" sound on all his early albums before finding cats like Eric Leeds and Atlanta Bliss, etc., was duplicated by keyboards and synths....instruments Prince could play extremely well.

He could, but not well. Candy has spoken about that, I believe.

But I firmly believe that Prince could have played any instrument there is, if he chose to practice on it for awhile.

Using Prince's defination of "instruments" I think he could legitamately play:

Acoustic Bass

Electric Bass

Acoustic Guitar

Electric Guitar

12-String Guitar

Nylon String Guitar

Piano

Harpsicord

Keyboard

Synth

Sequencer

Drums

Percussion

Triangle, etc....

What else?

I think Duane Tudahl mentions in his book how he recorded horns for some tracks. I was very surprised when I read it, as I didn’t know he could.

Untrue, though. Duane Tudahl's book notes how, during the 1999 Tour, Prince would sometimes go to a local club and sit in with a band, maneuvering from drums, to keyboards, to bass, to guitar. It's specifically noted that he played saxophone a few times as well.

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

I think it was Warner Bros that played up the 27 instruments idea. Instead of breaking all the instruments into their own categories, they listed each instrument separately to pad out his skill level. They also knocked 2 years off his age to sell the wunderkind image. The label also came up with using just Prince as his artist name in place of Prince Rogers Nelson. It was all pretty unneccessary, but it definitely added a certain mystique to him.

Not really. If was Chris Moon who came up with the idea of using the name "Prince" and it was Owen Husney who hyped Prince as a multi-instrumentalist new Stevie Wonder wizz-kid. WB just took that over.
But the instrument that Prince really played well was... the audience.

Fair enough. I just knew it wasn't Prince himself making those claims.
