Absolutely! We're so lucky to get this new song (even if it leaked a weeks ago) and mostly the amazing footage! So beautiful & amazing quality footage (mostly the one with the fur coat). It makes me love Prince even more. He was at the peak of his career (according to me during 82-86').

If I may, I hope to get new videos (The One, Face Down, The Holy River...).

There has been plenty of reporting in the regular music press etc. And a million views in one day is a decent number, but peanuts compared to plenty others.

It would indeed have been a great addition to The Hits. On the other hand, Prince chose to alter that original recording significantly for the Family release, so it's possible he wasn't satisfied with it and favored the new, post-Sinead arrangement. That would make sense since he kept playing that specific version (with minor alterations) live for years, never truly going back to the original cut.

This version is better than any other I have heard, by far. This one is so very Prince. I assume that many of you had heard this before. Sadly, I had not. I was expecting something closer to the version that The Family released. I'm not really a fan of that one.

I heard the first notes of this and it got my attention right away, so I turned it up

I think there's little bits of genius in the Sinead O'Connor version. How she goes up an octave on the second syllable of the word nothing... and how the phrase seems to be left open when she sings "to you" by singing a more unexpected note than how Prince seems to complete the phrase with what sounds to me like the more expected note there.

That said, had Prince released this version, it would have been a smash hit, without question.

I love the new video and really really really want to see the rehearsals. Those would be mint. It is also heartbreaking to watch.

I'm hoping that The Family mix with Prince on vocals comes out if the actual 24 track tape is found. Would be good to get an EP with a few mixes and the Rosie version to show the different options this song had.

You can even have Sinead's reading on there, if that makes commercial sense (I never understood that version, it seems Sinead never bothered looking into the lyrics, I cringe everytime I hear her say "mother" as if that is who she sings to..)

All in all, an incomprehensible release, but it's better than nothing. Will they keep doing Purple Rain related stuff forever, not looking at other eras? That video is so unrelated and disjointed. I hope it's a preview of a release of it with audio.

Although it's nice, I hate to say it but always felt he made the right decision giving it to Sinead, she added so much more poignancy and emotional impact to it I felt. I think he was good at knowing when to give his stuff away to someone that could make it even better (think Chaka and her far superior version of I Feel 4 U).

Do we know that he gave it to her? And the same for Chaka and I feel for you, for that matter. The compulsory license rule would have allowed her to just record it and release it without his permission, provided royalties are paid and such.

Oh for crying out loud, Sinéad did a cover. Prince "gave" her zilch.

It doubled in views in the past 8 hours and has jumped to #4 trending from #18 yesterday afternoon Feeling the love for Prince makes my heart happy

Somehow I doubt it was David Z who made the track so marvelously sparse giving lots of space to the orchestra. Prince had a habit of not using every recorded track for songs.

And yes, it's better than nothing, but I simply don't like the version much. I love Prince's vocals, but the mix is way too busy. (imo)

And yes, I did get the memo that it was the original 24 track tape, I just don't understand how they'd come out with such a pedestrian sounding mix. Get rid of that horrible synths it starts out with, give full attention to his voice and strings, maybe mix in the guitar as the song builds and replace Eric's solo with a guitar solo and you'd have bliss.. or at least something miles better than what's released. Since it is basically the same mix as what was bootlegged, I am not sure it was the original 24 track tape, they've been making claims that weren't true before..

seems to be an equipment tech. Behind Wendy there are some guitars... most of the time there are 3. When Prince has one there are 2 (so he seems to be playing one of them) but in a few shots there are only 2 and the guy is holding one and seems to be playing or maybe tuning it.

This is being shared everywhere even in my friends circles that are outside of Prince. I dont know how many times I have been sent this video in the last two days..

Amazing still.

This is also the first time i believe a 'video' for a prince song is good.

It's simply 'contemporary' in it's approach.

The shivering intro images, the way the whole is cut.

The fact they didn't touch the colours or the quality of the 'situation'.

It's very direct. Love that.

The slow-mo parts are a bit too emo for me, but overall they're OK.
