the video footage may be even better than it appears here. At the end of the video the prince symbol has a video tape type of filter on it. maybe they added a filter to other parts of the video.

but over all it looks pretty good. it be great to see and hear it one day

Usually I don't care for numbers,
but this is incredibly touching given the sincerity of the shots ("where did I go wrong" while images show Prince unwillingly damaging his ankles in the name of fun), the commitment, the generosity,
the mike handed to Wendy.

It's precious and, along with the website,
it's a beautiful gift from the estate.

Up until now I thought St Paul's version was better,
but this is not the Prince's demo we had, this is a real, polished studio version.
It's astounding to think this got kind of shelved and did not make ATWIAD.

But hey, no Family, no Clare, so there.

Now I'll be honest, I don't wanna spoil the party or bitch at the Estate or WB, let alone Prince's family, but I think certain things raise questions or could be improved.

- I suspect Prince would have been infuriated by the video, in the sense that the pictures aren't syncronized to the music, and he looks like a fool moving, singing and dancing in a vacuum like that. And we needn't forget the rumor that the vocals on the original multi-tracks had been erased when Paul's were recorded (I believe Alan Leeds is the source but I'm not sure, it could also be a mere urban legend). Now I don't wanna call anyone a liar: if they say it's from the vault, then OK. I'm just saying the lack of transparency surrounding PR Deluxe makes everything suspiscious. I'm cool with the estate releasing cassettes if they can't find any multitracks for any specific song, I just believe it'd be really positive to just tell us what the source for each recording is from now on, so no doubt is left.

- I also can't help wondering whether the edit that's on the physical release is an original edit from 1985, or something made for this specific release. I don't wanna throw accusations but I wish this had been clearly stated. I would rather not see any posthumous edits or remixes. Just please leave it all as such. And again, there's the suspiscious Our destiny/Roadhouse Garden precedent.

- The discography site is a great initiative (I, of all people, would have to be insane to say the contrary), but some info regarding credits has clearly been taken, as such, from Princevault. I find it awesome that they've taken the effort to look for real credits as opposed to just copying the official credits on the booklets (or writing nonsense as on PR Deluxe), but I think it'd be respectfuil to credit Princevault when they borrow info from them, given the hard work done by Pvault (and I, for one, know how much time those volunteer projects require). Pvault has a Creative Commons licence that requires credits to be given. The site is also hard to navigate and detailed album infos could be more accurate but I'm sure this can, and will be improved on the long run. Not everything has to be perfect on day 1

So in the ends, I'll say again that I don't mean to bitch: I realize that the estate has an incredible responsibility, to honor the legacy of one of our times' most significant artist while satisfying an extremely demanding fanbase. I welcome those new initiatives and the promise for more that's been made, and I'm glad they chose to commemorate Prince's passing that way. I just believe fans can help by giving feed-back and advices because, with all due respect, we can all work together to be the best possible "singular, authoritative source on all things Prince" (to quote the website's bold statement).

I completely agree with you! I couldn't even finish watching it. Both the music and the images are fascinating, but together... It just doesn't work. I guess I'll just have to buy the record...

It's a shame people have to pitch artists against eachother. The Sinead O'Connor version is simply beautiful. I remember even Wendy at the time saying how great it was.

This original Prince version is exceptional and I really love the version with Rosie Gaines.

I'm happy for all versions to co-exist out there for us to enjoy.

I've always wondered if Prince ever recorded a falsetto version.

well it isn't actually something new, is it? It's unholy to say, but the definitive version of this song was definitely Sinead's, who levelled it up x25. Just played hers, P's, F's, Cornell's, and at Sinead's I got still goosebumps the whole song long, while the other versions didn't do much at all.
