The Last Million Plus Seller Prince Album... Was going through the Media Traffic World Wide Chart archive for 2006, and was looking at the sales figures for 3121.
3121 topped the Global Charts for 5 weeks staying in the TOP 40.
It debuted at #1 in USA and eventually was certified GOLD by the RIAA for sales over 500,000.
World Wide it sold over 1.2 Million copies.
3121 was the last commercial Prince album and last Prince album to receive a cerfitication from the RIAA. |

it's a awesome album. It actually turned my friends on to Prince's new material at the time.It was nice to hear my friends talking about "Black Sweat" and "Fury" rather than Purple Rain and Lets Go Crazy for the millionth time |

Interesting data, thanks a lot.
Planet Earth stayed in the Global Chart Top 40 for 6 weeks and sold just a little over 500,000 world wide.
All the albums after that, Lotusflow3r, PlectrumElectrum, AOA, HitnRun Phase 1/Phase 2 never hit over 300,000. [Edited 4/10/18 12:29pm] |

Interesting.
Does anyone know the Billboard process for updating record sales? PR must be over 20 million in US by now. |

Billboard doesn't do that, the RIAA does. And it has to be requested by the label or artist. For whatever reason, WB and/or NPG haven't requested an update in years. |

PR was last certified 13x Platinum in 1996 by the RIAA and the numbers at that time was 13.6 Million in the U.S. alone... Since then it has never been recertified, and I would estimate in the U.S. alone it is over 15 million by now.
The record company never asked for recertification for PR, even though last summer they gave 13x Platinum plaques to The Revolution for the release of PR DELUXE.
If the numbers were actually updated in the U.S. PURPLE RAIN would be in the TOP 10 SELLING ALBUMS in the USA. |

AOA never hit more than that huh? interesting, that got rave reviews and it was after a hiatus from record making. the business is dead, i hope Prince didn't fret too much over shit like that. |

also, 3121 was a good album, i remember playing it where I worked, at this college bistro, several students came up and asked "who is that?" they didn't do that for anyone else. It might not be a prince album WE love but i thought it was interesting how the kids reacted. |

I listened to 3121 yesterday and was knocked by how well it's held up. It's really a great album in my eyes, most of the songs are catchy, confident and memorable and Prince sounds fully rejuvenated. I love every song except "The Word" and "Beautiful, Loved and Blessed." |

.
Terribly bland album. I'd go top five worst for Prince. I guess their reaction is interesting inasmuch that he went for a vaguely au courant sound.
.
Glad it sold relatively well for him though. After the fake "hit" of 'Musicology' it was nice to see he could still put a record at the top of the charts.
.
That was such a depressing period though, artistically. The back-to-back dross of 'Musicology' and '3121' really seemed to indicate he'd lost his touch. I’ve been informed that my opinion is worth less than those expressed by others here. |

all in the eye of the beholder, each and everyone here seems to think this or that album was horrible/excellent. musicology, 3121 were great albums. |

Not as bland as PLANET EARTH
It's probably the only Prince album I bought and listened to and actually felt dissapointed on how boring the album was. |

it wasn't that bad, some people here have said each and every album was his big return to form, i just listened to everything and didn't try to get carried away with the lynchmob here. I liked what i liked and was indifferent to what i was indifferent to and i still say i'd listen to a new prince or a springsteen album before i'd listen to anyone else's. |

Yeh-I thought that but when AOA and HitnRun came out it was like he had been completely refreshed. He seemed younger again. Always thought Musicology was good but very adult contemporary. It lacked the curiosity of Prince which always marked his brilliant albums |

Totally agree I felt he was back to experimenting on AOA and the HitnRun albums. I liked Musicology and Planet Earth, but felt like he was coasting. The one that was totally disappointing to me was 20ten. |

I always thought "The Word" was super corny. Its like no, I don't want to get saved. Love 3121 though, Get On The Boat was just as effective without the religious overtones. if it was just a dream, call me a dreamer 2 |

In my heart, Prince sold 1 BILLION copies of each record. That's enough for me
Who cares about sales? People buy what they're told to buy. If a major was to release the recording of a vacuum cleaner, invest 5M in promotion and make sure the media says it's a masterpiece, it'd sell 30M copies |
