He was right. I don't like the Bonnie Raitt cover either (even though it introduced me to the original). Prince was masterful at building up a song from the grounds up, but remakes have never been one of his strengthes. I'll say this though, I loved his remake of "Get On Up", that was definitly fun.

I am confused.. COokie jars are for cursing. And which remake are you now talking about. As for James comment, it was an unnecessary cover and not as good as the original. But "terrible" is a strong word to describe it and obviously coming from someone with an axe to grind.

LOL. What does anyone expect Rick James to say? Although in his autobiography, Rick gave Prince props...absolutely nowhere else does he say anything positive. It was not a "terrible job." "Betcha By Golly Wow" was fine...I have doubts about it as a choice for Prince's first single off Emancipation but it was clearly expressing the love he was feeling for Mayte at the time and it was well executed.

yeahthat

I love prince's version of BBGW. It's so heartfelt and the vocals are beautiful. I agree that it wasn't a good choice for a first single, but he was an independent artist and got to do what he wanted to do.

I agree and I also think there are many songs that should not be remade."Betcha By Golly Wow" is one of them smile the original by the Stylistics, produced by Thom Bell,is just perfect.

He has some great live remakes. I think he was more free in a live setting than in someof the studio stuff--particulary remakes. But his live version of The Whole of the Moon was outstanding, IMO. Also good were "Play that funky Music" that Cars song, Waiting in Vain, Heroes, Only Love can hurt like this, Best of You/All Along the Watchtower, MIss you (by the Stones) Creep (the second half), Motherless Child, EvenFlow (with the vocal line being played on guitar), and Use me up. Not live songs per see, but his versions of AnotherLove and "the sweeter she is" were good too.

Yup, I've always felt the same about that song, even if the cover is by Prince. The Stylistics' original can't be topped.

Cookie Jar & Get On Up were both cover songs & outtakes from 1988, which I thought he did a good job. Betcha By Golly Wow & I Can't Make you love me, are cover songs from Emancipation. I personally don't have an ax to grind when it comes to Prince because I love him. But I honestly think those were terrible and unnecessary too.

Not everything Rick says is wrong and not everything that Prince did was great, this subject is one of the few cases where the planets line up.

That Parlet song is incredible, you can tell it has the George Clinton touch through and through, it is amazing how many projects he had going at once, and the vaginal space ship cover - that is hilarious.

Got some kind of love for you, and I don't even know your name

I guess to really get prince take on Betcha By Golly Wow, you had to be there when it hit. Huge emotional impact song of the time, 1972, Prince was 14. Lush sexy tune coming over the airwaves. Then you go to the wreka stow and buy it, maybe run into somebody... So, whether Ricky liked it or not, some of us loved it - and the fact that he would cover it.

truth. One of the songs that shouldn't be touched. Prince & RJ were rivals. RJ respected Prince but when it came to music it was "game on." Ali vs Foreman. sad

BBGW was always a little too sappy. It is a classic song but I would listen to songs like "Pink Cashmere" a million times more. Rick James had some great songs but to me he was a second tier artist to guys like Prince, James Brown and Michael Jackson.

What are you outraged about today? CNN has not told you yet?

Pretty sure Prince's Cookie Jar cover was based on the original by Fuzzy Haskins, not the later Parlet version. (although I think the Parlet version is better)

.

As to Prince and covers.. to me it always seemed like he wasn't really comfortable doing other people's songs. BBGW is one of his worst covers to me, but he was in love and liked Philly soul. To me it was cool he wanted to do it, I could just skip the track.

Having watched that entire Rick James interview on YouTube, it's hard to believe Rick had any respect for Prince. He said some rough shit about Prince...
