Duane Tudahl's Prince and the Purple Rain Era Studio Sessions: 1983 to 1984

I know that there have been other threads on this book, although it appears that they have locked.

I FINALLY bought this book last week, and it is phenomenal! It's an absolute MUST-READ for any Prince fan! The research is so outstanding that this book is worthy of being a college textbook for a class on 20th century popular music.

.

I was able to read the first couple chapters today as I sat at the Post Office waiting to apply for a passport. A woman sitting next to me saw the cover and looked interested...she said she loved Purple Rain and I said that I loved it too, and I encouraged her to buy the book.

.

If you haven't bought the book...BUY IT!!!

I agree with everything you wrote....I have been reading my own copy at a super-slow pace to make it last longer. I don't want it to end!!!

I couldn't agree more. Well researched and organized into an amazing amount of detail that reads like a story.

Been thinking about this book for months and finally just bought one, now have to wait 7 - 10 days for it to arrive. Looking 4wd to it too, as I have bought several mediocre Prince books lately (Mick wall, Ben Greenberg, Brian Morton etc)

Got some kind of love for you, and I don't even know your name

Oh that Mick Wall book is baaaad. I've been reading it for a couple month and still have only made it through 80 pages. It's just terrible. So many factual errors.

This is a nice book but should have been a great book! Sadly the production is cheap and it hasn't been proof read properly.

What's irritating is that Mick Wall is a really good writer when he wants to be but this was so clearly just thrown togehter.

I agree with all you, I was expecting some next level shit, once he passed with all the cash in and tell all biographies (How many more ex associates and band members need to write books or do interviews?), but the Mick Wall one is baaad which is bizarre considering I read some shit of his that is good. Forgot the band, but possibly the Stones, Bowie or Hendrix (I read a lot of Music books) It is like someone told Mick Wall, "Publisher/Agent - While we are finding you that big project, how about doing a quick book about Prince, since he died recently and its a bandwagon?" "Wall - I don't know shit about Prince" "Publisher - Oh just read some cash in bio or mag and make some shit up, the Prince fans will buy it".

.

Brian Morton's Thief in the Tmeple is really dreadful and so is Toure, Ben Greenmans disappointed but was at least readable. Of all of the new books excusing the two photograph ones (Mobeen Abzar and Steve Parke), Mayte's is the best of a sad lot.

.

Been working my ass off the past 2 months and have earnt this, this shit better be good, if its like he interviews (Tudahl) I am in for a treat. If it is, we can look forward to more, as he told Peach and Black or Violet Underground he would be doing books on 1985/1986, 1987/1988 and even possibly 1981/1982.

And why is the type so small?! Surely, he knows that many of Prince's fans have "old eyes." confused

So, back to the Duane Tudahl book, Prince and the Purple Rain Studio Session: 1983 to 1984. His narrative about the recording process during early 1983 is also very interesting in that there is a great deal of information about the group dynamics of The Time, Vanity 6, and Prince's control over and involvement with both groups.

For anyone in MPLS this week, he'll be doing signings in a number of places. And we'll have copies for sale during lunch breaks at the symposium "Prince from Minneapolis".

Barnes and Noble has it. I bought my copy at a brick-and-mortar B&N 3 weeks ago.
