Maybe she cheated because he cheated however I sometimes think that P didnt consider what he was doing as 'cheating'. There can be levels of cheating, lol. You know how making out is cheating for some but oral isnt? I know folks who are like that. I digress. It seems like the age gap (and lifestyle differences) could have definitely impacted the way things ended for these two. All speculation though.

Given that Andy and Prince worked on Long Gone together, why would AA write it about P cheating on her or herself cheating on him? Neither of those scenarios makes any sense. PrinceVault puts recording dates for Long Gone between summer 2011 and early 2012. Source: http://www.princevault.co...=Long_Gone [Edited 4/8/18 10:54am]

She said in Summer of 2013 that she was relating to the scenario in the song and that it was "near and dear to her heart." Andy said in a 2014 interview on Upper Room with Joe Kelley that Prince wrote the song after they had listened to Fire and Rain at Paisley Park and he was inspired to try to and "come up with something better" The song is about the one you love finding someone else and replacing you with them.

[Edited 4/8/18 11:13am]

I can see P writing it as a better version of an existing song... but then having those fictional words ring true later. The song is general enough so that it can apply to anyone whose been cheated on and thus left to find a more faithful partner. I dont have any of Andy's music (I cant stand her voice in full doses) but I love a lot of her song lyrics.

On a side note, I just watched the video for ANOTHERLOVE and apparently, not only does P look somewhat angry, he also is very deliberate about the lyrics (theres no question about what he is saying). As a matter of fact, if they were both living at the time that the video came out and I watched it, I'd say 'shots fired' in that it was a clear message to Andy.

Exactly.Andy said at the time that she was relating to the lyrics. She said that a lot of her songs are about him and some of her lyrics seem to be directed toward him as well.He does look rather angry in the video and I loved the way he fluffed his hair when he came to that part of the song.Someone said that his SNL performance was used for the video. He definitely seemed to be sending a message to someone,I agree.

Thanks for the clarification. It makes more sense that she could relate to the song than the song coming from personal experience. Hi

I love the song too...one of the best off their album. It does make me sad tho that his heart was hurting. They did seem happily smitten with each other for awhile. It appeared obvious in the video for Rocknroll Love Affair. It felt good seeing him relaxed and happy.
I knew Andy was younger, but I didn't realize it was that much younger. I think Prince felt and looked younger than he was so the age thing wasn't even a thing for him. But she was significantly younger (naive). Enough that it would matter as their relationship grew and got more complicated,
I don't think he was as promiscuous during the later years. He was probably an outrageous flirt tho. That alone could create friction and/or issues if it got him into some delicate or uncomfortable situations.
It's a hurtful place, the world, in and of itself. We don't need to add to it. We all need one another. ~ PRN

He sings, 'Now, all you see is what I did / But how come I can't? Tell me that, kid'!
.
In other words, the ex-girlfriend is - in his opinion - totally fixated with whatever she thinks he did wrong, whilst he just doesn't get it / doesn't understand or agree that his actions were wrong. If she thinks it was so bad, how come he can't see it?

.
The use of the word 'kid' is interesting because it implies that the age-gap is, in some way, responsible for the younger one being so adamant about one view of things whilst the other (older) one has a totally different perspective.

[Edited 4/7/18 15:55pm]

Interesting perspective... I hadnt thought of 'how come I cant' meaning how come he cant see what he did wrong. I was reading it as 'how come I cant do what I did (even if it was wrong)'. I think the word 'kid' was a salt on the wound kind of thing. Those age gaps had never stopped him in the past. Just sayin. Lyrics are fascinating.

Use of the word 'kid' could simply be to rhyme with 'did' on the previous line.

.

Not to be a party pooper but sharing the clothes could also be about other women from the past like Mayte and Troy Beyer, who have both reportedly shared clothes with him.

.

Of course there is a good chance it's about Andy as it fits the time frame and the mention of the hair but we'll never know...

.

Either way, great song and one his best in latter years IMO. Shame he never played it live apart from on SNL.

Interesting, because I really don't know but everytime I would listen to it I thought about Mayte

You said I was what you wanted
Liar, liar.
You never wanted me that way.
I was just something U flaunted

I tried to be what you wanted,
But I'm tired, I'm tired

and then Manuela

The house we use to share it's now
Haunted, expired
A couple 100 days we'd have to pray. Amen

In the past he's been known for songs where one portion of the lyrics are about one thing and then the next set of lyrics are about something/someone else, so maybe that's the case here.

All I know is that while I like the song, I don't really like to listen to it because whomever the song was about, it's makes me sad to think that he would have to endure fake love and insincere people pretending like they loved him, because he deserved so much better. But then I'm like, well, he should have changed up the physical prototype and maybe he would have gotten better results. Then I think, well that's being mean and so I move on to something else... yeah I know TMI, time to log off

prince didn’t write the song.

Thanks, my bad....wasn't aware that the original version included the lyrics: "I was just something U flaunted" and "The house we use to share it's now Haunted, expired A couple 100 days we'd have to pray. Amen". LOL. still sounds like Garcia and Manuela 2 me.

True.He shared clothing with most of his women.I agree people think that line is about Andy due to the hair reference and time frame.I've seen people ask her about it on twitter.Guess only he knew who he directed it toward, unless he let them know.I would have liked if he had added it to more set lists too.

I thought about that as well along with calling himself "the kid." and as I mentioned earlier,he said his woman left him for "another 23 year old kid." to rhyme with "did" in his cover of The Sweeter She Is.He liked to rhyme did with kid in his songs obviously.lol
