maybe, but prince was going for an 18 century composer thing, a black mozart beethoven type thing and he came off pretty good in that look.

that era he was going more for the edwardian look overall. he still had the boas the headbands the ruffles, he sure denied the hendrix influence awful hard in those years but it was obvious, probably more obvious in stage mannerisms and clothes than actual guitar sound which he rightly said was more santana influenced.

I'm speaking in terms of Hendrix's style (fashion), not his guitar playing so much. Prince said Hendrix was more of a blues player.

well, someone quoted prince saying that the star spangled banner was a right of passage for any serious guitarist or words to that effect, I forget which book/person said that but it was a statement he made early in his career. Prince denied a lot of things, i was just listening to SGT. Peppers and remembering how Prince denied it's influence on ATWIAD, you know, maybe it's true, it's not really that much like Sgt. peppers but it's just as likely Prince just shot down the idea from being big headed. He used to say he didn't listen to other peoples music and right up to the end he said he didn't follow new music at all which wasn't true because we know he was at least finding young musicians on youtube and was somewhat familiar with some of the younger musicians music. anyway, the saying he didn't listen to no one's music, supposedly because he didn't want to be influenced, he said that in the eighties, was plain untrue, so many sounds of the time were vintage eighties really, i mean, if nothing else he had to listen just to have an idea of where the market was. We listen to his eighties music today and a lot of it sounds like it fits in that decade, especially the funkier stuff.

true, but Prince was into the 1960s-1970s look where a lot of artists actually wore ruffled shirts/paisley too

But he was also inspired by the 17th-18th century(?)/Victorian/Buccaneer-Pirates look

And the movie that Prince loved was Amadeus that had that PurpleRain/Romance 1600 look

I don't know if it was Jimi that actually inspired Prince to wear ruffled shirts

It's not edwardian. It's Regency at the latest

Correct - the look was most definitely not Edwardian. These are Edwardian looks - which are nothing like anything Prince ever wore.

https://vintagedancer.com...-overview/

Prince's look (as well as that of several other prominent musical groups) was part of the New Romantic - and was based on Vivienne Westwood's pirate collection (autumn/winter 1981) which was, in turn, based on looks of the 18th and early 19th centuries (a good century before the Edwardian period).

Prince's look was an amalgamation of both Georgian (ruffles and long coats) and Regency (button-front trousers and short, button-festooned jackets) men's fashion. In fact, he returned quite often to Georgian looks, wearing several coats post-2000 that definitely had that vibe. He'd moved on from ruffles, for the most part, but the high collars he sported (pretty much forever) definitely retained that Georgian/Regency feel.

Hell, even the name The Revolution calls to mind the American/French revolutionary period - which is late Georgian.

I love it when people who know nothing about history or fashion blather on about it. lol (Not you, jcurley. As I noted, you are absolutely correct.)

Thanks, Mumio. I've always been a history, fashion, and film buff - and have developed a pretty fair knowledge of all three. I also have nearly a half century of personal sewing and fashion experience, and have been a writer for a clothing company for more than 20 years.

So both - career and hobby! smile
