It’s amazing how fresh SOTT sounds 31 years later. It doesn’t scream 1987. Whitney’s album Whitney and MJ’s Bad are both excellent albums, and I love both albums, but both albums are VERY 1987-sounding.
.
SOTT is also so diverse. From Starfish and Coffee to Hot Thing to ICNTTPOYM to Adore, there is something for everyone on SOTT!

I'm going out on a limb saying that SOTT is the most "timeless" albums together with Remain In Light of the 80's. The difference is THIS:

-With Remain In Light you do music studies overall

-With SOTT you do music studies...And you dance, and you fuck, and you party. Yes, it's the best album of the 80's

This is what I wrote about one song a long time ago

"What is "If I Was Your Girlfriend"?

Clearly it's nothing normal, even by todays standard.

-Is it a ballad? Hmmm, maybe, sure doesn't sound like a typical ballad.

-...Well then, is it a pop song? Nope.

-Is it 1987? Man, I don't think 2014 have catched up yet. 1987 is still in shock and trying to get a grip on what the fuck just happened.

-Does it belong on the charts? Read above.

-Is it Prince? Yes, hell yes.

-Is it from this planet? Don't think so. Only Prince knows.

-Is it big? Dude, it's monumental (yet minimalistic on a sound scale. How do you even do combine those two elements on your own?)

-Is it timeless? It travels through time, slaps bruno mars, chris brown, arianna grande, nicky minaj, taylor swift and other countless fools while telling them to step up their A-game about ten times just to come

2 % closer to this masterpiece."

What is this piece of music that seems to come back and bite me in the ass everytime I hear it. Which would be approximately 2000 times................"

Great lines, thanks. Especially the little bit about traveling throughout the time lol .

Beautiful album, a masterpiece. And I would consider If I Was a minimalistic funk ballad, if that makes any sense.

It’s a good problem to have because it means that Prince’s catalogue is great...which it is.

Dare I say it's simpy the best album ever?

It makes more sense in retrospect even.

I bought it in 1987 when I was 12 years old.

I've listened to so much music throughout my life, I think SOTT is exceptional.

Ah, the days before the digital enslavement of us all...

Happy?

What has happiness to do with "Sign O' The Times"?
This is also the release that reminds us of
everything that could have been!

It opens on a bleak note for a reason.
And the cover? What does it say? "I'm outta here!"
The Black album, just a test for the black market.
"Am I underground still? Enough of a hardcore fanbase
so I can go upstream, as a dolphin?"

These Warner fucks... Wasn't Madonna earning enough, Piggies?
You had to be reaganian greedy all the way, you Gekko bastards.
And too think Columbia gave the Boss 5...

Man I'm pissed!

"Sign O' The Times".

Prince's definitive proof of his superiority in...
Dedication. Just that. Let the talents and the charisma aside for a moment.

Because after all,
that's all "Sign O' The Times" is about.
It's the Grand Result of our Prince's dedication to the gifts he received.
He didn't have this album in mind. It was 1986, that's all, if I may say so.

SKipper at these levels of fun was already way beyond business considerations.

It's exhausting, being a hardcore fan, you know.
April is never going to be easy, I guess.
It gets easier with time?
Better days will come our way.

I guess it depends on your level of self-projection,
but to sometimes measure your work abilities with Prince's
could almost lead to depression if you really go for it.
Admit it, it crossed your mind.
What kind of mental gym was he on?
What is this state of mind?
How many mental push-ups did he do between the age of, say, 12 and 17,
before Christopher and Owen take him for a trip to the moon for good, cherry or not?
He thought he would be landing in a few minutes, and instead it lasted 45 years.

By the time he's 27, SKipper's ability to perform,
pardon me, PLAY
— he stated himself many times that he considered himself
lucky not to "work" in the strict sense of the word,
thanks to his choice of career, oh, and, incidentally, God —
whether in the studio with REC on on the multitrack recorder, or in the moment on stage,
while daily day-dreaming about his next studio trickery ("nah, I've done sped up bass already"),
or thinking that it's been a long time since he did not play a 6/8,
or chosing the color of Wendy's scarf on the concert program
is simply unbelievable.

Happy birthday my skinny ass.
"Flood the market" my thinny butt, you executives.

1987 was supposed to be 5 discs.

God it makes me cranky.

Of course I loved the Warners amputated cut for a few years, I'll give this song configuration that.

But since 1986 is now in the known,
I stand firm in my boots as the frenchies say,
and I should know, I'm a Québecois:
5 discs, already, damn!

An absolute masterpiece. I'm convinced 80's Prince was the absolute best combination of musical talent ever realized in one person. From songwriting to conceptualization to execution (live and in studio) to quantity of music to quality of music to creativity to charisma...

Indeed, it is his best album, which shows his versatility— covering different music genres— his music is truly beyond compare.
